Chapter 6

The night her father’s file went missing had been easier to bear than the way Isabella Hart felt right now, lying awake in the dark with her mind refusing to settle.

She’d missed her shift that day, too shaken by the break-in to focus on anything else, and the message from her manager had arrived hours later…. shift missed, bonus deducted two lines that landed like a slap she didn’t have the energy left to feel properly. Money mattered. It always mattered, She is responsible for herself, so it does. But set against the theft of her father’s file, a docked bonus barely registered as a wound at all.

She sighed into the darkness of her room. She needed that money more than ever, and yet here she was, unable to care, her mind circling back to the same unanswered questions over and over.

Everything felt more complicated than she could have imagined even a week ago. Why was this happening now, after all this time? Who had gone through her room and moved faster, more precisely, than even her stepmother usually managed when she was determined to find something?

She sighed again, the sound swallowed whole by the quiet.

Something about all of it felt deliberately mysterious, as though the pieces had been arranged just out of her reach on purpose, daring her to notice the pattern and put them together herself.

Then a thought struck her in the darkness, sudden, insistent, impossible to ignore and she sat upright and reached for the lamp beside her bed, as though her body had remembered something her mind was only just catching up to.

Soft light pushed the shadows back into the corners of the room. Her eyes found the clock on her nightstand.

2:41 a.m.

She reached for the bag hanging from her headboard and pulled out the brown envelope, the one she’d found hidden behind the school library, her father’s name printed plainly across the front in ink that had faded but never disappeared. If there was any lead left to follow, this was it. This was all she had.

She’d hoped, staring down at it now in the lamplight, that something would finally click into place. Instead, the longer she looked, the less sense any of it made.

Numbers. Transactions. Company reports, photocopied documents stamped with letterhead she didn’t recognize. Names that meant nothing to her, listed alongside figures that clearly meant something to someone. Page after page of information that felt weighted with importance while somehow revealing nothing at all, like reading a language she almost understood but couldn’t quite translate.

The more she stared, the tighter the frustration coiled in her chest.

“What am I missing?” she whispered to the empty room.

The room, predictably, gave her nothing back.

She leaned against the headboard and rubbed at her eyes, tired in a way that no amount of sleep would actually fix. Her gaze drifted toward the empty box sitting on her desk, the one that had held these documents for longer than she wanted to admit.

Four years. The papers had sat untouched for four years, buried among old photographs and things she’d stopped bothering to look at. Nobody had gone near them in all that time. Nobody had asked about them. Nobody had even said her father’s name in the same breath as whatever this paperwork represented.

And now, out of nowhere, someone wanted them badly enough to break into her room to get them.

Why now?

The question twisted tighter in her chest with every repetition. And then another thought surfaced, one she’d been quietly avoiding for days, one she could no longer push to the side no matter how hard she tried.

When had all of this actually started?

Her eyes narrowed as she worked backward through the timeline in her head. Not four years ago. Not last year. Not even last month.

It had started only days ago. The exact day Rosewood International School changed hands. The exact day Adrian Kingsley arrived and everyone’s world shifted slightly on its axis without anyone quite noticing at the time.

Isabella sat up straighter against the headboard, the pieces rearranging themselves in her mind almost against her will, faster than she could stop them.

The cemetery, The school assembly. The anonymous message that had found her out of nowhere, with no name attached and no explanation offered. The documents hidden behind the library, waiting for her like they’d been left there on purpose. His name, Adrian Kingsley’s printed inside her father’s private files, in ink just as faded as the rest. And the particular way he looked at her whenever Daniel Hart’s name came up in conversation, like he was choosing his words with more care than the moment seemed to require.

Your father was a good man.

The sentence replayed in her mind on a loop, simple on its surface, but heavier than it had any right to be. As though there was an entire second sentence sitting behind it that he had decided, deliberately, not to say out loud.

Her stomach tightened around the thought.

The billionaire investor arrives. And suddenly everything changes.

The thought wouldn’t let her go, no matter how many times she tried to talk herself out of it. She wasn’t accusing him of anything not yet, not out loud, not even fully in her own head. She wasn’t even certain he was involved in any of it at all. But the timing was impossible to explain away. Years of complete silence, undisturbed and untouched, and then Adrian Kingsley stepped into the picture, and one mystery after another began stacking up behind him like dominoes falling in slow motion.

The anonymous message. The library documents. The stolen file. Every thread she pulled, regardless of which direction she tugged it, seemed to circle back to the exact same man.

Adrian Kingsley.

Could it really be coincidence? She didn’t think so, not anymore. Who was he, really, underneath the tailored suits and the composed expression? Why did he know her father’s name well enough for it to appear inside Daniel Hart’s own private records? And why did it feel, every single time she asked him a direct question, like he was handing her half an answer and quietly pocketing the rest?

A knot tightened hard in her chest. Maybe she was being unfair to him. Maybe she was stitching together threads that had no real connection to one another, seeing a pattern only because she desperately needed one to exist, needed this to make sense after years of it making none at all.

But until someone gave her a better explanation than the one she was building for herself in the dark, she wasn’t going to stop wondering.

Could Adrian Kingsley really be part of this?

The question lingered long after she switched off the lamp, long after she lay back down against her pillow, long after exhaustion finally began dragging her under despite everything still spinning in her mind.

For the first time since finding the documents, Isabella made a decision, quiet and absolute, the kind she rarely allowed herself.

She was done waiting for someone else to hand her the truth.

If no one else was going to explain it to her she would find it herself.
