Chapter 4

By the time Isabella made it home that evening, exhaustion had settled into her bones. She was grateful, at least, that her shift wasn’t until tomorrow one less thing pulling at her tonight.

The house greeted her with an unfamiliar quiet. Victoria and Chloe weren’t downstairs, their usual noise and clutter absent from the front room, and for once Isabella let herself welcome the silence instead of bracing against it.

She climbed the stairs quickly, the documents from the library still hidden safely inside her bag, and slipped into her room before anyone could appear to ruin the peace. With the house empty, she finally allowed herself to do something she’d been putting off for years.

She knelt beside her closet and pulled out an old wooden box from the back of the bottom drawer, dusty, scuffed at the corners, the kind of box that had been forgotten on purpose. Only she knew what it held. She hadn’t opened it in years; back then, its contents had felt like nothing more than relics of a life that no longer existed. But the documents she’d found behind the library that afternoon had planted a question she couldn’t shake, and now this box felt like the only place that might hold an answer.

Carefully, she lifted the lid.

Photographs. Letters. Business cards gone soft at the edges. Fragments of a life that had ended too early. The sight alone made her chest tighten her father had died only months after her mother, in a terrible accident. That had always been the official story. The only story anyone had ever offered her.

She sorted through the contents slowly, photograph by photograph, letter by letter, until something unfamiliar caught beneath a stack of old files, a brown envelope she didn’t remember ever seeing before. Her heartbeat quickened as she eased it open.

Inside were documents that had no business being tucked away in a box of old memories: business contracts, financial statements, legal records, most stamped with the name of her father’s company.

Hart Industries.

The company he had spent his life building, and ultimately lost everything to. Isabella flipped through the pages, confusion deepening with every line until she froze.

A single name sat near the bottom of one document, printed in plain, unremarkable type that somehow still managed to knock the breath out of her.

Adrian Kingsley.

The name felt strange in her chest, too large for the small space it occupied on the page. Then she remembered, the billionaire investor. The man from the cemetery. The man she’d stood face to face with behind the library only hours ago, the one whose eyes had lingered on her like he already knew more about her than she did about herself.

Her pulse climbed. Why would his name appear buried in her father’s private records? What possible connection could exist between a dead businessman and the billionaire who now owned her school? The way he’d looked at her that afternoon too aware, too knowing suddenly felt less like curiosity and more like something else entirely.

She reached for the remaining pages, desperate for more but before she could find anything, the front door slammed downstairs.

Voices spilled through the house. Victoria and Chloe were home.

Panic shot through her. She shoved the documents back into the envelope and the envelope back beneath the files, closing the box and sliding it back into the drawer but in her haste, she forgot to lock it.

A moment later, Chloe’s voice rang up the stairwell. “Mom! Guess what?”

“What happened?”

“The entire school is obsessed with the new investor.” Chloe’s voice rose into a delighted squeal. “They’re saying he’s young, handsome, and richer than half the country.”

Victoria laughed. “Sounds perfect for you, doesn’t it?”

“I know.”

Isabella rolled her eyes from the top of the stairs, unseen. Some things never changed, no matter what else shifted beneath the surface of her life.

But as she sat back against her bed, the documents from the library still in her bag and the photograph of that name burned into her memory, an unease settled deep in her stomach. Only yesterday, she hadn’t known Adrian Kingsley existed beyond a stranger glimpsed across a cemetery. Now his name seemed to be everywhere she turned in her school’s ownership, in her father’s old files, in the careful, knowing way he’d looked at her.

He was connected to something. To her father’s secrets, maybe. To whatever had truly happened to Hart Industries, and to the man who had built it.

And she intended to find out exactly how.

Outside her window, dark clouds gathered low across the evening sky, swallowing the last of the light.

Across the city, in a study lined with glass and quiet, Adrian Kingsley sat with a glass of untouched whiskey at his elbow, his assistant standing a careful distance away.

“Find out if the message was sent to her too,” he said, his voice low and even. “Who sent it. What’s in the documents. All of it.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And one more thing.” Adrian’s gaze didn’t lift from the window, where the storm was beginning to roll in over the skyline. “It seems someone already suspects why I came for her. Find a way to protect her without her knowing it. They’re trying to pull something out of this, and right now she’s still only confirming pieces but if she gets the full picture before we’re ready, she’ll be in real danger.”

“Understood, sir.”

“Let them think I came here for the school. Nothing more.” His jaw tightened, the only outward sign of anything beneath the calm. “I made a promise to her father. Whatever role I played in what happened to him, I won’t let her pay for it too.”

The assistant said nothing, only nodded and left the room. Adrian remained where he was, alone with the storm gathering beyond the glass and a vow he intended to keep even if keeping it meant Isabella Hart could never know the real reason he’d come looking for her at all .
