Chapter 3

Adrian didn't move from the doorway.

He just stared at the suitcase like it was a bomb someone had left on our bed.

"Away from me," he repeated. "Claire, you had surgery four days ago."

"I know. I was there."

"You can barely walk." His brows pulled together. "Where are you even going to go in this state? Your mother's place is three hours away. You can't drive."

I didn't answer him.

I unzipped the front pocket of the suitcase and took out a white envelope. The paper was a little bent at one corner. I smoothed it with my thumb, then crossed the room and set it on the dresser between us.

He glanced at it. "What is that?"

"Open it."

He picked it up, slid out the pages, and read the first line.

I watched the color leave his face, then come back in two red patches on his cheeks.

"Divorce papers." He gave a short, stunned laugh. "You're serious."

"I signed already. Bottom of page four."

"When did you even—" He flipped through the pages too fast to read them. "Claire, this is grief. This is the medication talking. Dr. Lindqvist said you might feel things that aren't—"

"Don't tell me what I feel."

"Somebody has to." He tossed the papers back onto the dresser. They slid and fanned out. "You're not thinking straight. You lost the baby. I get it. It's horrible. But you don't burn down your whole life over it."

He stepped closer and lowered his voice, the way he did with clients who were about to walk out of a deal.

"Listen to me. We'll have another one. When you're healed, when things calm down, we can try again. We'll have other children, Claire."

Other children.

His mother had said the same thing over sandwiches. Like babies were dishes. Break one, buy a new set.

I lifted my eyes to his.

"I lost our child, Adrian," I said quietly. "She had a name. She had a hat with a strawberry on it. And you're already thinking about the next one."

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

For eight years, Adrian Kessler always had an answer. For my tears, for my questions, for every time I asked why Sophia needed to call him at midnight. He always had something smooth and reasonable ready.

Now he just stood there with his hands hanging at his sides.

"I'm not staying in this house," I went on. "I'm not going to stand in that kitchen and smile while your mother tells me women move on. I'm not going to climb those stairs every day past the spot where—"

My voice cracked. I swallowed it down.

"And I'm done proving myself to a man who has never once stood on my side."

"That's not fair."

"Isn't it?" I tilted my head. "Name one time. One time you believed me over her."

His jaw worked. He looked at the carpet. At the window. At the scattered pages.

He didn't name one.

"That's what I thought," I said.

A thump came from the hallway. Small feet, running.

The door banged against the wall, and Evan burst in wearing his dinosaur pajamas, hair sticking up on one side. His eyes darted from the suitcase to his father to me.

"Mommy?" His voice was thin and high. "Are you really leaving?"

My whole body ached toward him.

He was the baby I'd carried for nine months. The boy whose first word was *Mama*. The one who used to fall asleep with his hand fisted in my hair.

A week ago, I would have dropped to my knees and pulled him against me. I would have said *no, sweetheart, of course not, Mommy's not going anywhere.*

I stayed where I was.

"Yes," I said. "I'm leaving."

His lip trembled. "But why?"

"You told me Aunt Sophia is gentler than me. You told me she reads better. You drew a picture of your family, and I wasn't in it."

He flinched like I'd pinched him.

"I'm not angry, Evan." That was true, and it surprised me. "If you think Aunt Sophia is better at being a mom, then you can stay here with her. That's okay."

For the first time since Sophia moved in, my son looked scared.

Not sulky. Not annoyed. Scared.

His eyes went huge and wet. He grabbed the edge of the bed with both hands. "I didn't—I didn't mean you should *go*."

"I know you didn't."

"Then don't!"

"Evan," Adrian said sharply, "go back to your room."

"No!" Evan stamped his foot. "Daddy, make her stay!"

Adrian turned to me. Something cracked in his face, some piece of his calm finally giving way.

"Look what you're doing to him," he said. "Is this what you want? You're scaring our son."

"I'm not the one who taught him I was a bully."

"Claire." He reached for my wrist.

I stepped back so fast my stitches pulled. Pain flared across my stomach, hot and bright.

"Don't touch me."

The words came out low and flat and hard.

Adrian froze with his hand in the air.

In eight years, I had never spoken to him like that. I had pleaded. I had cried. I had apologized for things I didn't do just to make the silence end.

I had never once told him no.

He slowly lowered his arm. His fingers curled into his palm.

"Fine," he said, and his voice was hoarse. "Sleep on it. We'll talk in the morning."

"There's nothing to talk about."

He took Evan by the shoulder and steered him out. Evan twisted around in the doorway, tears dripping off his chin.

"Mommy, please—"

The door shut.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and pressed my hand to my stomach until the pain dulled. Then I finished packing.

---

I left at seven the next morning.

Adrian had fallen asleep on the couch downstairs. Sophia's door was closed. Evan's door was cracked open an inch, and I stood outside it for a long moment, listening to him breathe.

I didn't go in.

I rolled the blue suitcase down the hall. Its wheel squeaked on the third step, and I held my breath until nothing stirred below.

At the front door, I stopped.

My wedding ring had grown loose during the pregnancy. Now it slid off my finger without a fight, leaving a pale band of skin where it had sat for eight years.

I set it on top of the divorce papers on the entry table. Right where he would see it.

Then I opened the door and stepped into the cold.

For eight years, I had begged. For his attention. For his trust. For a seat at my own family's table.

I wasn't begging anymore.

My cab was waiting at the curb. The driver popped the trunk and hurried to help with my bag.

I was reaching for the car door when my phone buzzed in my coat pocket.

A text from an unknown number.

*You think leaving fixes anything? I have something that belongs to you, Claire. Come find out what before it's too late.*

Below it, a photo loaded slowly, one gray line at a time.

It was the strawberry onesie.

The one I had packed last night.

The one that should have been folded in tissue at the bottom of my suitcase.
