Chapter 3

Lily POV

The blackness that filled the room was a physical presence, a thick, woolen blanket pressed against the eyes.

I sat on the floor, the small of my back pressed to the unyielding steel.

The gash on my foot sent a dull, rhythmic signal of pain up my leg, a minor complaint against the larger terror coiling in my gut.

The metal wall, instead of offering a cool surface, seemed to hum with a stored, unnatural warmth.

From the ceiling, a low thrum began to vibrate through the chamber as a ventilation system kicked on.

It was not cool air that descended.

A current of hot, dry air, like the breath of a kiln, began to fill the small space.

The air in my lungs felt suddenly thin and useless.

With a fumbling desperation, my fingers found the hidden seam in my sundress, closing around the hard, familiar shape of a small telephone.

Sophie had taken my public device, but this was a military-grade satellite burner—a remnant of the paranoia my older brother had instilled in me. I did not know, as my trembling fingers pressed the power button, that Sophie had found it three days ago while I slept. She had not taken it. She had simply drained its battery to a single, deceptive bar—enough to turn on, not enough to complete a call. It was a trap I had not yet realized I was already inside.

Marcus Lin had been the head of the Lin family, and for all my life, my shield.

He had spoken of Dominic.

He had said, more than once, that the man was an interloper, his ambition a hunger that could only be sated by consuming all that was ours.

But I had refused his counsel.

My gratitude was a blindfold, woven from the singular memory of him throwing his body in front of a motorcar to save mine.

I had mistaken that single act of performance, the blood on the asphalt, for a sacrament.

Then, two months ago, whispers had solidified into fact: Marcus had been killed—taken apart, the rumors said, piece by piece.

And in the vacuum that followed, Dominic had moved to consolidate my family's holdings.

My hands shook as I drew out the burner. Its thick antenna was a promise against the steel walls. I dialed the emergency frequency for the Lin syndicate.

I intended to issue a Don's Command—a summons that, by law, could not be ignored, dispatching every man still loyal to my location.

The line crackled to life for exactly three seconds. A dial tone—weak, wavering—then a voice I could barely hear through the static. It was a man's voice, but I could not make out the words. I pressed the phone harder against my ear, my breath caught in my throat.

"This is Vivian Lin," I gasped. "I am issuing a Don's Command. Send a tactical unit to the Hale estate immediately. I am being held—"

The line hissed and spat. The voice on the other end spoke again, but the words were fractured, unintelligible, swallowed by interference. Then, silence.

I pulled the phone from my ear and stared at the screen. The battery indicator flashed once—a single, mocking red bar—and the device went black.

I did not know then that Sophie had already drained the battery. I did not know that the voice on the other end had been my brother's most loyal captain, a man who would have moved heaven and earth to reach me—if only he could have understood a single word I said.

I let the useless block of plastic fall from my numb fingers.

A sharp crackle from the corner of the ceiling broke the silence.

The intercom was active.

Sophie's voice filled the thickening air, a confection of saccharine and false solicitude.

"Dominic, darling, is it really safe to leave her in there?" she asked.

The word darling struck the air and hung there, a shard of glass in the heat. The illusion I had clung to—that this was a matter of power, not passion—shattered. The 'fragile sister' was not merely in my house; she was in my life. A cold, venomous clarity began to replace the despair.

"I'm just so worried about her fragile mental state."

Dominic's voice followed, freighted with a profound weariness.

"You're too soft, Sophie," he replied, his tone flat.

"You didn't see what I found in her study last week. Letters. To the old Lin associates. Asking questions she had no right to ask." There was a pause, and when he spoke again, his voice had dropped to something colder. "She needs to sweat this fever out of her."

He paused, and his next words were like chips of ice.

"A period of isolation will remind her of her station."

A rage so pure it felt like its own form of energy blurred my vision. I threw my head back and screamed at the small, perforated circle in the ceiling.

"Dominic, the heat is too much!" I sobbed, my voice splintering.

"Please, the baby... it isn't moving."

Sophie spoke again, her voice a conspirator's whisper, amplified and grotesque.

"Don't listen to her, Dom. It's a manipulation."

"She's using the child to escape the consequences." A pause. Then, softer, almost inaudible: "When she's gone, I'll give you a proper heir. One you can trust."

The words hung in the hot air like a blade suspended mid-swing. I did not hear Dominic's response. I did not need to. The silence that followed was answer enough.

A beat of silence stretched, thick with heat and malice. Then came his quiet assent.

It was followed by the distinct, mechanical click of a thermostat dial being turned past its safety.

The hum from the vents escalated to a roar.

A blast of air, no longer just hot but scorching, struck my face. The temperature in the room climbed with an audible ferocity.

The heat seared the inside of my throat. Sweat was no longer forming; the air was too dry. It simply leached the moisture from my skin, leaving behind a tightening film of salt.

I curled into a ball on the floor, a single, instinctual gesture of preservation.

I wrapped my arms around my stomach, a useless barricade.

I waited for a kick.

I prayed for a flutter, a shift, any sign of life.

There was only a dense, terrifying stillness.

Then, a different sensation: a sharp, unnatural cramp that seized my lower abdomen and twisted.

I squeezed my eyes shut, and a gasp, thin and broken, escaped my lips. Somewhere in the darkness, my brother's voice echoed from a memory I had tried to bury: 'That man will be the death of you, Vivian. And I will not be there to save you when he shows his true face.' I had laughed at him then. I was not laughing now.

Because the heat was no longer just burning my skin.

It was tearing something loose inside me.

And then—a warm, dark wetness spread between my legs.

The baby was dying. And there was no one coming to save me.

Or so I thought.

Then — I heard it.

Gunfire. From upstairs.

Someone was coming.

But who?
