Chapter 2

I waited as the band began the final waltz—the dance traditionally reserved for the evening's hosts. Soft spotlights converged on the center of the floor, bathing the grand ballroom in a romantic glow.

Couples seized this last opportunity, holding each other close, savoring this exclusive moment.

I craned my neck, my eyes desperately scanning the dance floor. And then I saw him. His arm was wrapped tightly around Freya’s waist as he patiently soothed her pouting.

As a soft beam of light fell upon them, Freya clasped his hand, her smile brighter than the crystal chandeliers above.

I heard one of his friends shout, "Eduardo, this is supposed to be your dance with Gemma! Aren't you going to go find her?"

Before Eduardo could answer, Freya let out a small gasp, feigning an accident as she spilled a glass of red wine on his cuff. "Oh, Eduardo, look! Your cufflink! I'm so sorry!"

Hearing Freya's apology, my friend spoke up indignantly. "Gemma spent a month designing that cufflink! It has her initials on it! You're not just going to let Freya take it to 'get it cleaned,' are you? What about Gemma?"

Eduardo paused, his hand hovering over the cufflink. After a long moment, he said, "It's fine, she can get it cleaned. Gemma is understanding. She won't get angry over something like this."

I didn't hear another word. I turned and left, knowing full well he wasn't coming back for me. The dance floor was only a few steps from my corner, yet he was unwilling to let go of Freya and walk those few steps toward me.

On the way back, I slowly slipped the ring off my finger. I had poured a month of my life into designing our matching rings, yet in his eyes, they were just another toy to appease Freya.

I should have given up long ago, shouldn't I? It had been three whole years. I shouldn't have kept hoping he would change.

I returned to our penthouse in a daze. The apartment was cold and empty; even the housekeeping staff was away for the gala. All of New York's young elite were at that glittering affair.

And here I was, utterly alone, cut off from all the warmth and celebration.

When my parents first passed away, Eduardo was my rock. He was by my side through everything, his eyes full of sincerity when he told me, "Gemma, from now on, I'm your family. You will never be alone again."

Later, we fell in love and got engaged. And it was then that Freya wedged herself between us.

Eduardo seemed forever incapable of saying "no" to her. Instead, he would always say to me, "She's still young. Just let her have her way."

One compromise after another had led me to a single, painful conclusion: it was time to leave. Perhaps I was better off on my own after all.

Just as I made up my mind, the phone rang. It was Eduardo. I didn't answer at first, but the screen kept flashing insistently. I sighed and finally pressed the answer button.

"Gemma, where are you? I can't find you at the gala!" His voice, cutting through the distant music and chatter of the party, still had a pull on my heart that was hard to resist.

Before I could speak, I heard Freya's coquettish voice on the other end. "Come on, Eduardo! The midnight fireworks are about to start!"

He responded to her without hesitation. Then, almost as an afterthought, he said to me, "You should come over to the terrace. We still have time for one last dance."

I stared at the phone, the line now dead, and calmly sent him a message. "That won't be necessary. I'm already home. You two have fun."

One last dance, indeed. What he didn't know was that the engagement party scheduled for the day after tomorrow wasn't going to happen either. I began to pack my things.

Having lived here for three years, everything in the apartment seemed to carry a trace of me. On the living room wall hung my award-winning botanical art, on the shoe rack sat a matching pair of couple's sneakers, on the bar were a pair of couple's mugs, and even on the sofa were two oversized pillows I had sewn myself.

Now that I was leaving, I couldn't take any of it with me. Each object was a fresh stab to the heart, yet I couldn't bring myself to throw any of it away.

But aside from these items steeped in memory, my actual belongings were pitifully few. A single 20-inch suitcase held everything that was truly mine.

By the time I was ready to leave, dragging my suitcase, the sky was already growing light. The night had passed without me realizing it.

I looked at all these things I was once so familiar with, a dull ache spread through my chest, and my eyes burned with unshed tears. Even though I had decided to break free from his hold, my heart still ached.
