Chapter 3

Hope sat in the study, her laptop open, the encrypted video call connecting. She gave Dr. Foster a fake name and referred to Caleb only as "my husband."

She described the ritual of needing wine before intimacy, his avoidance, his excuses. She left out the pinprick and the shredded paper. It sounded too insane, even to her.

Dr. Evelyn Foster, a chic woman in her fifties with sharp, intelligent eyes behind stylish glasses, listened intently.

"From your description," Dr. Foster began, her voice calm and analytical, "this could point to a few possibilities. One is that your husband has a significant psychological barrier or trauma related to intimacy. The alcohol and the ritual might be coping mechanisms he needs to perform."

"Another possibility," she continued, her tone growing more serious, "is that this is a specific type of fetish. He might be aroused by a state of vulnerability, or even unconsciousness."

The word "fetish" made Hope's stomach turn. It was disgusting, but it was also a container for Caleb's strangeness. It almost made sense.

"If you want to know the truth without a direct confrontation," Dr. Foster suggested, "you could try a controlled experiment. Pretend to be drunk. See what he does."

The call ended, but Hope remained frozen in her chair. Fake it? The idea was terrifying, but it was also the only path forward.

She remembered a trick from college parties. Sobriety pills. Small tablets that friends used to avoid getting dangerously drunk. She went online and ordered the strongest ones she could find with expedited shipping.

A few days later, the opportunity arrived. Caleb announced he had booked a table at a Michelin-starred restaurant . He also had a "special bottle of wine" waiting at home.

While Caleb was in the shower getting ready, Hope excused herself to the bathroom. She swallowed the pill, her heart pounding. A strange clarity, a sharp-edged sobriety, settled over her.

At dinner, Caleb poured her a generous glass of red wine.

This time, Hope didn't hesitate. She even feigned excitement, and under his watchful gaze, she drank the entire glass.

Then, she began her performance. She let her head loll, her vision "blur." She swayed as she stood up, leaning heavily against him.

"Caleb, I'm so dizzy..."

He caught her, just as he always did. He swept her into his arms and carried her toward the bedroom. That same gentle, satisfied smile was on his face.

Hope let her body go limp as he laid her on the bed. She closed her eyes, her breathing even and deep. She was the perfect picture of a woman lost to wine.

Caleb stood over her for a long moment, watching. Making sure.

Her heart was a frantic drum against her ribs. What will he do? Will he touch me now, when he thinks I'm unconscious?

But he did nothing. He didn't even take off her dress.

He simply pulled the duvet over her, tucked her in, and then turned and walked out of the bedroom, closing the door softly behind him.

Hope's eyes flew open in the darkness. Confusion warred with a new, rising dread. He left? Where did he go?

She slipped out of bed, a ghost in her own home, and crept to the study door.

She heard his voice, low and guarded. He was on the phone.

She pressed her ear to the cold, hard wood of the door, straining to hear.

"... yes, she drank it. It's safe now."

A pause.

"Do you think I wanted to marry this... liability? If it weren't for the situation, I would never have gone through with it."

The words hit her like a physical blow. The air rushed out of her lungs. Her blood turned to ice.

Liability. Forced to marry her.

His voice was filled with a cold disgust she had never heard before. It was the voice of a stranger, a monster wearing her husband's face.

She clamped her hand over her mouth to stifle a sob, her body starting to shake. Tears streamed down her face, hot and silent.

It was all fake. The gentle touches, the loving words, the perfect marriage. It was all a meticulously crafted lie.

Caleb was still talking. "...don't worry. Everything is proceeding as planned. I'll handle her."

She couldn't listen anymore. She was afraid she would scream. She stumbled back to the bedroom, diving under the covers, her body trembling violently.

She finally understood. His goal wasn't her body. It was something else. Dr. Foster was wrong. The truth was infinitely more sinister than a simple fetish.

Who was he talking to? What was "the situation"?

Overnight, her world had been ripped apart. She hadn't married for love. She had walked willingly into a cage built just for her.
