Chapter 6

The blood on Diego Rivas's clothes had started to dry, but he was still in a lot of pain. He was in pain all over, and every breath he took felt like a fight. He stood in the middle of the compound, where the battle had taken place. There were still signs of war on the ground and in his soul. The unknown Alpha had been beaten, but it had cost a lot. Diego's own position was in danger, and the pack's loyalty was broken.

He looked across the compound and saw Mariana Pérez. Her face was a mask of doubt. There was still a spark between them, but it was buried under the ashes of betrayal. The space between them was more than just physical. He could see the conflict in her eyes and the doubt she had every right to feel.

Diego said, "Mariana," his voice hoarse. He walked up to her slowly, but she didn't move. "Please, we need to talk. We can't keep going like this. "I've done things wrong, but I'm trying to fix them."

She looked at him for a second, her lips shaking, but she didn't say anything. She looked at him, torn between love and anger, between the man she used to know and the one who had hurt her so badly.

Diego kept saying, "I'm here," his voice full of desperation. "I want to fix this. For us. For the kids.

Mariana's eyes softened for a moment when the kids were brought up. She was feeling a lot of things, and she couldn't let them take over. "You don't get it, Diego," she said, her voice steady but full of pain. "It's not just us. It's about all the things we've lost. About everything you've given up. And I'm afraid that you're only doing this because you don't want to lose the pack.

Diego stopped moving. What she said hurt more than any blow he had taken in the fight. He was scared, scared that he would lose his legacy and that the pack would fall apart. He had worked hard all his life to build this empire, but at what cost?

"I'm not just fighting for the pack, Mariana," he said softly, never taking his eyes off of hers. "I'm fighting for you." For our family.

She turned away, and her eyes glazed over. "I don't think I can believe that anymore."

After the battle, Valentina Ruiz quickly made her power known. She had always been smart, but now her desire was clear. She got a group of loyalists together and spoke with the cold, precise tone of someone who thought she was meant to be in charge.

"I should be in charge of this group," Valentina said at a tense meeting. "Diego is weaker now. He is no longer able to be Alpha. "I am the one who will lead us to greatness."

Her voice echoed in the quiet room, and the pack members looked at each other nervously. Enzo Castillo, the ambitious Alpha-in-training, stood at the front with his arms crossed and a blank look on his face.

"Are you sure of that?" Enzo's voice was sharp as he asked. "Valentina, you may have your followers, but the rest of us are still loyal to Diego." "You can't make people loyal."

Valentina smiled and her eyes sparkled with joy. "Enzo, loyalty is something you have to earn." Diego is loyal to power, not to his pack. That's why I will lead us forward, not him.

The room got quiet as the tension grew, but no one spoke up for her. Valentina had begun her quest for control, and the pack's unity was starting to break down. Diego was still hurt from the fight, but Valentina was already making her move.

At the same time, Mariana was at a crossroads, torn between her love for Diego and the deep wounds of betrayal. She had always known that Diego had more to his past than he had told her, but now that the stakes were higher, the truth seemed to be coming out little by little.

One night, while she was walking through the quiet woods around the pack compound, she ran into Lucia Torres, who was just as sharp as ever.

"Mariana," Lucia said, her voice almost a whisper, as if she were testing the air between them. "I've heard things." Diego's dad was involved in something much worse than you know. He betrayed his own bloodline, and that's what caused all of this.

Mariana stopped in her tracks, her heart racing. "What are you talking about?" she asked, even though she had a good idea of what Lucia meant. She could see the darkness in Lucia's eyes, the same darkness that Diego had been keeping from her.

Lucia moved closer, her voice low but firm. "Diego's ancestors were to blame for the pack's downfall. They chose things that would hurt them. And now he's paying the price for it. The truth about his family could ruin everything.

The words hit Mariana like a bolt of lightning. She couldn't stop her mind from racing as she tried to understand what Lucia was saying. Was this the reason Diego had been so distant? Was this the reason he had pushed her away? Was the betrayal he had done really a sign of the curse that ran in his blood?

"You are lying," Mariana whispered, but her voice didn't sound sure. She could feel the truth in Lucia's words deep down. The pack's fall... Diego's fall. Was everything already set in stone?

Diego's world became a whirlwind of doubt and uncertainty as the days went by. His fight for power and his search for redemption all seemed so weak now. He couldn't afford to lose the pack, but could he save it without losing himself?

Álvaro García, the former pack warrior, came looking for him just when it seemed like things couldn't get worse. They met in secret, away from people who might see them.

"Diego," Álvaro said, his voice serious. "You need to know something about your kids. About Mariana's kids. They have powers that are linked to your bloodline. I didn't want to tell you, but you need to know the truth now.

Diego's heart stopped for a second. "What skills?" What do you mean?

Álvaro looked around to make sure they were by themselves. "The Rivas bloodline is more than just power and control." There is something in your kids that is... ancient. It could change everything, from the pack's future to your own legacy. But it could also ruin it.

Diego's mind raced as the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. His kids were the most important thing for his pack's future. Could they be the answer, or the last weapon that would destroy everything he had worked for?

Mariana always knew more than she said. Diego had to choose between protecting his family and protecting his legacy.

The candles flickered in the dimming light of our Upper West Side apartment, casting dancing shadows across the mahogany dining table I'd spent all afternoon setting. Ten years. A decade of marriage deserved more than just any dinner—it deserved perfection. I adjusted the porcelain centerpiece one last time, running my fingers over the delicate surface. Porcelain. Traditional, but fitting. Beautiful and fragile, just like I'd been foolish enough to believe our marriage was. The Château Margaux—Preston's favorite—sat breathing in its crystal decanter. I'd made his preferred meal: herb-crusted lamb with rosemary potatoes, the recipe Marisol had taught me during our first year together. My mother-in-law.
