Chapter 1

I clutched the heavy DSLR camera to my chest, my fingers numb from the biting Swiss wind. The sunset over the Alps had been magnificent, painting the snow peaks in brilliant shades of gold and crimson. I couldn't wait to show William the photos. Three years of marriage today.

I pushed the keycard into the slot of our luxury suite. The green light flashed.

"William?" I called out, kicking off my snow gear in the foyer. "I got some amazing shots."

Silence. The only sound was the faint splashing of water coming from the private hot spring terrace.

I walked across the heated marble floor and pushed open the glass doors. Steam clouded my vision for a second.

"Fuck, yes," a woman moaned loudly. "William, harder."

My stomach plummeted. The camera slipped from my hands, hitting the wooden deck with a loud crack. The lens shattered.

Through the mist, I saw them. My husband, William. And his secretary, Nancy.

He was standing behind her, gripping her bare hips, thrusting violently into her wet cunt while she braced her forearms on the edge of the stone pool. The water slapped against their bodies with every brutal movement.

"Fuck," William grunted, his voice rough and completely unashamed. "You feel so damn good, Nancy. So much better."

"Keep fucking me," she whimpered back, throwing her head back. "Don't stop."

I stood frozen. My lungs forgot how to work.

"What the hell are you doing?!" I screamed, the sound tearing from my throat.

William stopped. He didn't scramble away. He didn't try to cover up. He simply pulled out of her and grabbed a white towel from the heated rack.

"Jennifer," he said, wrapping the terrycloth around his waist. "Keep your voice down. You're being hysterical."

"Hysterical?" My hands shook violently. "You're screwing your secretary in our anniversary suite!"

Nancy turned around in the water. For a split second, her eyes met mine. A sharp, victorious gleam flashed in her pupils. Then, she blinked, and tears instantly welled up.

"William, I'm so sorry," Nancy cried, her voice trembling perfectly. She crossed her arms over her bare breasts, shivering. "I shouldn't ruin your marriage. I'm a terrible person. I'll leave right now."

She made a show of reaching for her silk robe draped over a nearby chair.

William caught her wrist. "Stay."

He turned his cold gaze back to me. "Jennifer, don't be so naive. In this world, no man will ever be loyal to just one woman forever."

"You promised me," I choked out. The betrayal burned my throat like fire.

"I promised to provide for you," he snapped. "And I have. You live in a penthouse. You travel the world. Grow up. You're acting like a child."

"A child?" I stepped forward, my fists clenched. "Because I expect my husband to keep his vows?"

"Because you think the world revolves around fairy tales," William retorted. "Nancy, get dressed. We're having dinner."

"William, I really should go," Nancy whispered, playing the victim.

"I said, stay," he commanded.

Thirty minutes later, the three of us sat in the suite’s private dining room. The silence felt suffocating. I stared at my untouched steak. Nancy sat across from me, fully dressed in a tailored blouse, sipping red wine as if she belonged there.

"Eat your food, Jennifer," William ordered, cutting into his prime rib.

"How can you sit there like nothing happened?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"Because I don't let emotions ruin my evening," he replied. He pointed his silver fork at Nancy. "Look at Nancy. She understands how the real world works. She graduated top of her class at Columbia. She knows business. She knows how men operate."

"What does her degree have to do with you cheating on me?" I demanded.

"It means she's rational," William countered, taking a sip of his whiskey. "She's understanding. She doesn't throw tantrums over basic human nature."

Nancy lowered her eyes, playing the humble guest. "William, please don't be too hard on her. Jennifer just cares about you."

"She cares about the comfortable life I provide," he shot back, not even looking at me. "She chose to give up her master's program to stay home. That was her own choice. Now she expects me to play the perfect, devoted husband while she contributes absolutely nothing to the company."

My jaw tightened. "I gave up my education to build a home for us! You asked me to!"

"I asked for a partner," he said, his tone flat. "Not a dependent."

"I manage your entire personal life," I argued, tears threatening to spill over. "I host your clients. I take care of your mother."

"Anyone can hire a maid or an event planner," William scoffed. "Nancy secured a ten-million-dollar contract last week. What did you do? Pick out new curtains?"

"Do you know why I brought Nancy on this trip?" William asked, pouring himself another glass of wine.

"Because you're sleeping with her," I said, glaring at him.

"Because she speaks fluent German and negotiated our expansion into Zurich," he corrected, his tone condescending. "While you were out taking pictures of mountains, she was securing our future."

"Our future?" I repeated. "You mean your future."

"I pay for your clothes, Jennifer," he stated. "I pay for your car. I pay for the very food on this table. My future is your future."

Nancy reached across the table and placed her hand over his. "William, stop. You're hurting her feelings. She doesn't understand corporate pressure. You shouldn't expect her to."

I stared at her hand resting on his knuckles. He didn't pull away.

"I want her out of this room," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

"She leaves when I say she leaves," William replied.

I pushed my chair back, the wood scraping loudly against the floor. "Then I'll leave."

"Sit down," he barked. "You're not making a scene in this hotel."

I stood my ground. "Watch me."

"If you walk out that door, I'll freeze your accounts before you reach the lobby," he threatened.

I froze. He knew exactly how to trap me. My savings were tied up in his assets. I had nothing of my own.

I dug my nails into my palms, slowly sinking back into my chair.

*Forgive him,* a small, desperate voice whispered in my head. *It's just sex. Men make mistakes. You can fix this. You have to fix this.*

I tried to force the anger down, swallowing the massive lump in my throat. I stared at my plate for the rest of the meal, unable to form another word.

Finally, dinner ended. William stood up, pulling his phone from his pocket. "I need to take a call with the Tokyo office. Clean this up."

He walked out onto the balcony, sliding the glass door shut behind him.

Nancy picked up her designer purse from the empty chair. "I should head back to my room," she murmured.

I didn't answer. I just followed her to the front door of the suite, my chest hollow, wanting nothing more than to see her leave.

She stepped out into the carpeted hallway.

Before the heavy oak door swung shut, Nancy paused.

She looked over her shoulder. The innocent, tearful expression vanished instantly. Her lips curled into a slow, mocking smirk. Her eyes dragged up and down my body, full of pity and disgust.

"Happy anniversary, Jennifer," she whispered.

The door clicked shut.

My blood ran cold. This wasn't a drunken mistake. This wasn't a moment of weakness.

That smile told me everything. This was a premeditated victory. She had wanted me to catch them.

And I had just realized I was entirely alone in a war I didn't even know I was fighting.

What else had William promised her?
