Chapter 5

— ¿Volver... a qué?

No te quiero en New York.

No puedes dejarme.

Fin Flashback.

The champagne flute trembled in my hand as the string quartet's melody faded to silence. Five hundred of Manhattan's elite turned their gazes toward us, their jewels catching the light like predatory eyes in the darkness. Something was wrong. Caden's fingers pressed against mine with unusual force, his palm damp with sweat. "Ladies and gentlemen," Caden's voice carried across the Plaza Hotel's grand ballroom, smooth as aged whiskey. "I have an announcement to make." My heart fluttered. This wasn't part of our plan. We'd rehearsed nothing beyond the customary toast to our future—a future I'd dreamed of since we were children running through Central Park, collecting fallen leaves and promises. "I stand before you tonight not just as your host, but as a man who has made a difficult business decision." His voice hardened, each syllable landing like a stone in still water. Business decision?

I was the Barron heiress, and everyone assumed Damien, the Head Warrior, was my fated match. But the sickening scent of rotting peaches led me to the garden, where I found him pinning Eve against a tree. He wasn't just cheating; he was admitting he only wanted me for the Alpha title, while calling that manipulative charity case his "true queen." When I tried to cut off his funding, he declared war. He sabotaged my saddle, leaving a silver shard embedded in my leg, and sneered that I was vulnerable without him. Then came the ultimate humiliation. At my twenty-first birthday party, in front of every high-ranking wolf, Eve and Damien played a deepfake video of me with Rogues. Damien looked at me with mock pity, offering to marry me only to "hide my shame," while his six brothers stood as a human shield protecting Eve. They called me broken. They thought I was defenseless. But they didn't know I had already sent a message to the most dangerous wolf in existence. Just as Damien tried to force his claim, the ballroom doors exploded inward. The Alpha King walked in, eyes glowing gold, and pulled me against his chest. "She is mine," he growled, silencing the room. I looked at Damien and his brothers, holding up a silver USB drive. "You destroyed my reputation to protect her," I whispered. "Now, let's see if you still want her when you find out she's been sleeping with all seven of you." I plugged in the drive.

I woke up from emergency surgery to repair a torn retina, completely blind and alone. The first phone call I received wasn't one of concern. It was my mother, furious that I had embarrassed our family by missing a business brunch. Her next order was chilling. "Go to your husband. Get pregnant. A Hartman heir is the only thing that will secure our trust fund." My husband, Jakobe Hartman, is a man who views our marriage as a corporate merger. Our hundred-page prenup has a clause that strictly forbids any emotional entanglement. He was the last person I wanted to see me so helpless. But then I stumbled blindly out of my room and crashed right into him. He found me weak and pathetic. He overheard my mother's abusive voicemail. He even listened in silence as I spun pathetic lies on the phone, pretending he was a doting husband just to get her off my back. I expected him to walk away in disgust. Instead, he moved me to the penthouse suite and sent me home in an armored car. I dismissed it as a cold calculation to protect his public image. I thought I was finally safe in my own apartment. I had no idea he was watching me on a live security feed, just moments after ordering the hostile takeover of my family's entire company.

The afternoon sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, casting golden light across the Egyptian cotton sheets. I smoothed my hands over the silk duvet, adjusting the pillows for the third time. Everything had to be perfect tonight. "Come on, Katherine," I whispered to myself, "you can do this." My fingers trembled slightly as I reached for the small medical bottle on the nightstand. Dr. Chen had prescribed this specialized lubricant specifically for my condition—vaginismus, the diagnosis that had haunted me since adolescence. The cream-like substance contained both a dilator and localized anesthetic, designed to help my body relax enough for penetration without the searing pain I'd experienced before. I uncapped the bottle, examining the clear gel inside. The instructions were clear: apply generously, wait fifteen minutes, then proceed with gentle pressure. Tonight would be different.
