Chapter 2

MAYA'S POV

On Friday afternoon, the studio lights bathed the living room in a harsh glare.

Two assistants adjusted the velvet backdrop while the photographer checked his lens. Every year, the Blackwells commissioned a formal family portrait for the holiday cards sent out to business partners and social circles.

"Maya, move all the way to the far right, past the decorative urn," Victoria instructed, waving a dismissive hand from her armchair. "Sienna, take your place right in the middle, between Ethan and Leo. It balances the frame properly."

Sienna offered a demure, practiced smile. She wore a champagne silk dress that perfectly matched Ethan's tie. "Are you sure, Victoria? I wouldn't want to overstep."

"Nonsense," Victoria said loudly. "You are where you belong."

Ethan said nothing, adjusting the gold links at his cuffs.

I took two steps to the side, standing outside the primary lighting zone, practically blending into the curtain behind me. I didn't argue.

The photographer raised his camera. "All right, everyone, chin up! Leo, look straight at the lens, please."

Leo stood in his stiff navy blazer, his small shoulders hunched. Instead of looking at the camera, he glanced toward the edge where I stood. Slowly, he took a step sideways. Then another.

"Leo, stay on your mark," Ethan said in a low, warning tone.

Leo ignored him. He walked straight past Sienna, ran to my side, and grabbed a fistful of my dress, burying his knuckles deep into the dark fabric.

"Young man, back to the center," the photographer coaxed, lowering the camera with an awkward chuckle. "Look at the lens and give me a big smile for your family!"

Leo tightened his grip on my skirt, scowling fiercely at the camera.

"My family is over here," Leo said, his voice ringing through the quiet room.

Victoria's expression hardened into ice. "Ethan, take control of your child."

Ethan stepped forward, his jaw tight. He grabbed Leo by the wrist, forcibly pulling him back toward Sienna. "That's enough, Leo. Stop throwing tantrums."

Leo fought against his father's grip, but Ethan held him firmly in place by his shoulders.

He didn't ask why his son was upset.

Ten minutes later, the shoot was cut short.

Ethan gestured for me to follow him into the study down the hall. He closed the heavy oak door behind us, shutting out the murmurs of the living room.

"Starting tomorrow, things are changing," Ethan said without preamble, walking over to his desk. "Sienna will be taking over all of Leo's school affairs."

I stood by the door, watching him. "What does that mean?"

"It means you are to remove yourself from the parent chat group tonight," he replied evenly. "You will no longer do the morning drop-offs or afternoon pickups. And you will not be attending Family Day next Friday. Sienna will go in your place."

A heavy silence settled between us.

"He's six years old, Ethan," I said, my voice steady despite the tightness in my throat. "I've been the only mother he remembers since he was three. You're stripping away his entire routine overnight."

"He will adjust."

"Are you deciding who gets to love Leo, or are you just clearing space for Sienna?"

Ethan looked up, his brows drawing together in sharp displeasure. He leaned against the edge of his mahogany desk, crossing his arms.

"Don't act like a hysterical, jealous housewife, Maya. It doesn't suit you," he said coldly. "When I married you, your greatest quality was that you were obedient and knew your place. You never made demands. Don't lose your mind now simply because the woman who actually belongs in this family has returned."

"Knowing my place," I repeated softly.

"Yes," Ethan said, turning back to his laptop. "Leo needs a mother with real social standing, someone who can open doors for his future. Sienna has the background and the connections. You don't. Accept it quietly, and this household will remain peaceful."

I didn't answer him. I opened the door and walked out.

By nine that evening, screams and sobbing echoed down the second-floor hallway.

I hurried toward Leo's bedroom. Inside, the sheets were torn off the mattress, and Leo sat in the middle of the floor, his face red and slick with tears.

Sienna stood near the doorway, holding a plush, brand-new gray cashmere blanket with a designer logo emblazoned across the corner.

"Leo, please stop screaming," Sienna said, sounding both annoyed and helpless. "This one is pure cashmere from London. It's a thousand times better than that old rag."

"Where is my dinosaur?!" Leo shrieked, kicking his legs frantically. "Where is it?! I want my blanket!"

"That old thing was filthy and frayed at the edges," Sienna said, turning toward me as I entered. "I told Mrs. Ellis to throw it away. A child in this household shouldn't be sleeping with garbage."

"You threw it out?" I asked.

"It was worn out, Maya," Sienna said, smoothing her skirt with an air of superior practicality. "He needs to get used to proper things."

Leo saw me and crawled across the carpet, wrapping his arms around my knees, his whole body shaking with violent sobs. "Mommy, she threw it in the trash... my green dinosaur..."

I had spent three weeks hand-stitching that green dinosaur quilt for his fourth birthday, when he was terrified of sleeping in the dark.

I patted Leo's back gently. "Stay here for a minute, Leo."

I walked down to the laundry room, found the large black garbage bag by the back exit, and untied it. The faded green quilt lay near the top, still wrapped in the clean sheet stripped from his bed. One edge had torn.

I carried it upstairs, fetched my sewing kit from the guest room, and sat on the floor outside Leo's door. My phone lay on the hallway table beside me.

Leo immediately scrambled over, sitting right between my folded legs, resting his wet cheek against my knee as he watched my fingers move.

"See?" I whispered, pulling the green thread through the seam. "Just a loose stitch. Good as new."

His sniffling slowed. By the time I secured the final stitch, he had fallen asleep against my knee, one hand resting on the quilt.

Footsteps stopped in front of us.

Ethan looked down at the two of us sitting on the floor, his face clouded with disgust.

"You're only reinforcing his weakness, Maya," Ethan said sharply. "Coddling him over a piece of trash. Once you leave, he'll have to break these childish habits anyway."

I set the needle safely in its case.

I looked up at him. "Once I leave?"

Ethan didn't flinch. He reached inside his suit jacket, pulled out a thick white folder, and dropped it onto the low hallway table next to us.

The bold black letters on the cover were unmistakable: *PROPOSED DIVORCE SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT*.

"Now that Sienna is back, everything should return to its proper place," Ethan said, his voice flat, completely devoid of sentiment. "Sign the papers. I want you moved out by tomorrow morning. I've included a generous settlement for your four years here. Take your personal belongings and go."

Four years of devotion, reduced to a transaction to be cleared out by Saturday morning.

Before I could speak, the screen of my phone on the table lit up with a new notification.

*Private Message from Harrison Kingsley:*

*The private car will arrive at the front gate at nine sharp on Saturday morning. Your brother and I are waiting for you at the estate. Welcome home, Maya.*

I replied, *I'll drive myself. Please cancel the car.* Then I looked back at the proposed agreement.

There was no anger left in me. No sorrow. Only a profound, absolute stillness.

I picked up the pen and signed the acknowledgment of receipt attached to the draft. I left the settlement signature line blank.

"My lawyer will review the terms," I said. "This is a receipt, not my agreement to them."

I closed the folder, slid it to his end of the table, and looked him in the eye.

"Fine," I said quietly. "I'll move."
