Chapter 3

Spencer went out again that night. I knew who he went to see because Natalia had just called him to say that she was out drinking.

My husband, the man I was legally married to, went to keep her company because he was afraid that she'd hurt herself.

I could never mimic that sweet and coquettish voice of hers. "Spencey, is Didi mad? It was my fault for interrupting your trip, but I really didn't do it on purpose. Could you please plead with her for forgiveness on my behalf?"

Spencer was fuming to begin with. Hearing that from Natalia made him even more frustrated at me.

"Why are you apologizing? I was the one who suggested going to keep you company. It had nothing to do with you. It was Bindi who didn't know her place. You don't have to worry about her."

Spencer spoke on the phone in a loud voice right at my door, as if he was making sure that I could hear him.

Nonetheless, he had already broken my heart to pieces. I would no longer make a fuss or get jealous over him anymore.

Spencer was furious at my indifferent response. He slammed the front door with all his might when he left.

After that, I could finally relax. Having to be around a ticking time bomb like him every day made me tense up mentally, so much so that he was almost driving me insane.

Now that he left, I could finally pack my bags in peace.

I called the movers and dismissed the nanny. Then, I took Rosalie with me as we got into the car to head back to my parents' place.

Rosalie giggled as I held her in my arms. It was almost as if she knew that I was the one who loved her the most. Looking at her like that made my heart melt.

I signed the divorce agreement before returning it to the same spot on the coffee table.

Even though I wanted to send a message to Spencer, I realized that he had blocked my number.

That didn't matter, though. I figured that I just wouldn't send him that message, then. From today onward, I would live life the way I wanted.

I shared all that happened between Spencer and me with my parents. After hearing the story, both of them could only sigh.

"It's alright, Didi. It's his loss."

"That's right, my dear. Our family is rich enough to look after both you and my granddaughter. You don't have to worry about anything, so just focus on recuperating."

Spencer and I had been together since our college days. Mom and Dad had always been extremely pleased with him.

He was intelligent and motivated. More impressively, he started a company of his own at a young age.

All things considered, I assumed that I would live a happy life forever.

It wasn't until Natalia's appearance that I realized everything I owned was weeded out by her.

When Spencer and I were dating, he always said, "This temper of yours is really similar to a young lady whom I used to know. Women are so difficult to appease."

Natalia was the apple of his eye. She was his favorite.

I, on the other hand, was merely a substitute for a regret from his youth.

At this thought, I shook my head at how silly I once was.

In the past, I was naive enough to think that staying by one's side was the best way to show one's love.

Even though he used to have feelings for someone else when he was younger, I thought that I would surely become the most important woman in his life as long as I stayed by his side for long enough.

However, I couldn't be more wrong. I never knew how much damage one's first love could bring.

The day Natalia returned to the country, Spencer stayed cooped up in his office all alone. He refused to eat, drink, or answer the phone.

He made me so worried that I burst into tears at the door of his office building.

Yet, in the end, he simply said in a frigid tone, "Don't you think that what you're doing is embarrassing? Save your tears for when you get back home."

From that time on, I had a vague feeling that there was still something missing between Spencer and me.

The person who was meant to be with you would not give up on you just because of such a small hurdle.

For some reason, as if the skies knew how I felt, it started pouring.

The rain pitter-pattered against the window and rained down on the walking pedestrians.

I was spacing out when a familiar-looking car stopped at the front of my place. Then, a familiar-looking person emerged from the car.

I couldn't believe that the person was actually Spencer.

He stood outside the fence of the villa, pressing the doorbell repeatedly. But no one opened the door for him no matter how persistent he was in ringing the doorbell.

He refused to give up. Even though he was completely drenched in the rain, he persevered and stood outside the gates.

Vaguely, I could hear him calling out, "Didi! Didi!"

However, what was the point? What was he doing when I stood on Tenth Avenue in Mulverna, freezing to death in the cold wind?

We had simply swapped positions.

I rang Spencer up, not because I felt for him, but because I felt that he was being quite embarrassing like this. He could even blame it on my family if anything were to happen to him.

So, I called him to warn him.

Spencer answered his phone almost immediately. His tone of voice filled with sorrow as if he was… pleading with me.

"Didi, you're finally willing to give me a call, aren't you? The divorce is just a lie, isn't it? You only did that out of jealousy, right?"

Hearing those consecutive questions gave me a headache.

In an impatient tone, I said, "I'm just calling to tell you not to embarrass yourself at my family's home. My family will not be responsible if anything happens to you. I've called the cops. I'm just… giving you a heads-up.

"Also, let's find time to finalize our divorce when you're free, alright?"
