Chapter 1

An emergency has just occurred at the hotel. William Davis, the mayor's son, suffers from cardiac arrest in the hotel. Unfortunately, there's nothing the doctor in his team can do about it.

I happen to be vacationing nearby, so I quickly rush toward the scene. As soon as I rush into the lobby, the security guards quickly stop me.

"A life is being saved at the moment. Unauthorized personnel aren't allowed to enter."

I'm about to dig out my work badge when Lydia Sharpe, the intern tagging along, suddenly covers her mouth and shouts daintily, "Don't let her in! There's a scalpel and a syringe of anesthetics in her bag!"

Everyone is shocked by Lydia's revelation. The security guards instantly have me surrounded while wearing vigilant looks.

Sweat starts rolling down my face out of anxiety.

"I'm the head of the cardiothoracic surgery department of Central City Hospital! I've heard about the patient's condition! He must undergo a thoracotomy right away!"

The next thing I know, Lydia has snatched my bag out of my hands. Things such as the sterilized gloves, defibrillator, as well as life-saving medication are scattered all over the floor.

Lydia steps on the one and only life-saving pill instantly.

"I just heard you claiming that it's best if the mayor's son dies right away! Why are you still pretending to be a savior?

"Hurry up and arrest her! I suspect she has something to do with the ongoing case! She's definitely a murderer!"

The person in charge's expression shifts drastically. Soon, he pins me on the wall.

"Detain her and inform the security department right away! This woman is suspected of being involved in a murder!"

As I stare at Lydia, I can't help but tremble violently.

Right now, I'm the only one in the entire city who can perform the surgery on William. Unfortunately, he can only last for another half an hour in his current condition.

"Let go of me!" I screamed at the general manager, Zachary Campbell. "I really am a doctor!"

Subsequently, I turned toward my intern, Lydia Sharpe, and yelled, "What the hell are you doing? Are you aware of how crucial the situation is? Explain everything to them and release me right now!"

Lydia was the intern I had been mentoring, and she was the most incompetent doctor I had ever seen.

Once, she even switched saline for lobeline in an operating room. If I hadn't caught that mistake in time, her actions would've caused a serious medical incident.

After the surgery, she clung to my arm and began to sob hysterically.

"I'm sorry, Dr. Quinton," she cried. "I was on duty the night before and didn't manage to get much rest. Please give me another chance."

It wasn't easy to become a doctor. I was willing to give her another chance, but I refused to let her stay in the department of cardiothoracic surgery. I never expected her to hold a grudge against me because of what happened.

Lydia glanced at Zachary before explaining, "She used to be my mentor, but she's always had conflicts with the mayor. I have reason to believe that she's behind this incident.

"After all, she's the head of cardiothoracic surgery. It wouldn't be difficult for her to tamper with something if she wanted to."

She continued, "Just moments ago, she called the mayor a stubborn fool over the phone. In fact, she even mentioned that it'd be best if his son died here today. I'm convinced that she's responsible for this."

I was livid. I had complaints about some of the equipment in the cardiothoracic department, but my issues with the mayor, Thomas Davis, were strictly work-related. Besides, I was on leave that day. There was no way that I had anything to do with this situation.

"When did I ever mention that I wanted the mayor's son dead, Lydia?" I barked.

She flinched before hastily ducking behind Zachary. "I'm not trying to be petty, Zach… but the patient in there is the mayor's son. We need to be extremely careful."

Upon hearing what she said, Zachary glanced at me before turning to look at Lydia again.

"I am the head of cardiothoracic surgery at Central City Hospital," I declared once again. "At the moment, there are only five surgeons in this city who are capable of performing a thoracotomy. Three of them are stationed at my hospital, while the other two are at the state medical center."

I paused, then added, "However, four of said doctors are currently attending a conference in Southport City. They won't be able to make it back in time. Right now, I'm the only person who can perform this surgery. If we delay any longer, the patient won't survive."

I glanced at my watch. There were 25 minutes left. I needed to start this surgery immediately.

To my surprise, Lydia spoke again.

"I've already checked on the patient," she said. "The situation isn't as complicated as she's making it out to be. There are plenty of doctors in this city. She can't possibly be the only one that's capable of performing this surgery."

She went on, "She's just exaggerating. If we actually let her in and something happens to the mayor's son, we're all going to pay for it."

As her words fell, Zachary turned to the security guards and instructed, "Restrain her. Make sure she stays put."

Two guards grabbed me from either side and forced me down onto the empty floor nearby.
