Chapter 3

"My insurance will handle everything."

Liana's tone was clipped and dismissive. She took the business card Sterling offered, a thick, heavy piece of cardstock with embossed black lettering, and shoved it into her clutch without a single glance.

In her experience, men who drove cars like this had staff to handle unpleasantries. This was just some rich guy's driver.

Then, the rear window of the Rolls-Royce slid down.

Silently. Ominously.

It only opened halfway, revealing a sliver of the dark, cavernous interior.

A man's profile came into view, sharp and chiseled like a Roman statue. The ambient gray light of the storm did nothing to soften the severe lines of his face.

An aura of cold, absolute authority radiated from the car, a palpable force that cut through the rain and the noise.

Liana took an involuntary step closer, trying to hear what he might say over the drumming of the rain. As she did, a gust of wind blew a sheet of water off the car's roof, splattering across her collarbone. The icy shock made her flinch.

The last of her composure snapped.

"You might want to get your brakes checked!" she called out, her voice sharp with annoyance. The words were out before she could stop them.

Sterling immediately moved, placing himself between Liana and the open window. A shield.

"Ma'am," he said, his voice still polite but with an underlying edge of steel. "I would advise against that."

Over Sterling's shoulder, Liana's eyes met the man's in the car.

They were dark, deep-set, and utterly devoid of warmth. For a terrifying second, her heart stopped. A jolt of primal fear, the kind a rabbit feels when it realizes the shadow overhead is a hawk, shot through her. She felt pinned by his gaze, dissected and dismissed in a single, silent moment.

The recognition hit her like a physical blow. Those eyes—the same ones from the magazine cover, the same ones that had burned into her memory only hours ago. It was Julian Carlisle. The hangover and the rain could no longer mask the terrifying reality of who she had just insulted.

Her survival instincts kicked in, overriding her anger. This was not a man to be provoked.

She swallowed hard, forcing the rage down.

"My apologies," she said, the words stiff and reluctant. "I will cover all the damages. In full."

The man in the car didn't respond. He didn't even blink. He simply gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod to his driver.

"Drive," he commanded, his voice a low rumble.

The window slid up, sealing him away in his silent, leather-lined world.

The Rolls-Royce pulled away from the curb. As it accelerated, its rear tire hit a deep puddle, sending an arc of muddy, gray water flying through the air.

It landed squarely on the hem of Liana's makeshift dress.

She stood frozen for a moment, staring at the brown stain spreading across the pale silk.

Then, she trembled with fury.

"You arrogant, ill-mannered bastard!" she screamed at the disappearing taillights, the insult lost in the roar of the storm.

Inside the car, as it merged onto the FDR Drive, Sterling glanced in the rearview mirror. His boss's expression was as cold and unreadable as ever. Sterling had a sinking feeling that Miss Pruitt had just made a very powerful, very unforgiving enemy.

The Rolls-Royce swept through the grand, wrought-iron gates of the Carlisle family estate in the Upper East Side. The arrival of the Phantom caused an immediate stir among the press and guests waiting outside. The king had returned to his castle.

Inside the grand foyer, Vice President Frederick and a coterie of senior executives immediately fell silent, their fawning conversations cut short. They turned as one towards the door, their faces a mixture of apprehension and respect.

Meanwhile, in a far corner of the main ballroom, the Pruitts were blissfully unaware. Richard and Margaret were busy schmoozing with a minor banking heir, their backs to the entrance, completely missing the seismic shift in the room's power dynamic.

Julian stepped out of the cold and into the warmth of the mansion. A butler silently appeared to take his overcoat, which was still damp with rain.

As he entered the ballroom, a hush fell over the crowd. The string quartet seemed to falter, the volume of their music dipping as if in deference. All eyes were on him.

Outside, the storm intensified. A loud clap of thunder rattled the windows, a dramatic overture for the evening's events.

Miles away, Liana sat in the passenger seat of a tow truck, her ruined dress clinging to her skin. She stared at the muddy stain on her skirt, a burning humiliation coiling in her gut. She was on her way to the most important social event of the season looking like something the cat dragged in.

In her clutch, the black business card lay untouched. A time bomb, waiting to explode.

Back in the ballroom, Julian silenced Frederick's sycophantic welcome with a single, dismissive wave of his hand. His power needed no words.

The tow truck pulled up to the service entrance of the Carlisle estate. Liana took a deep, shaky breath. She plastered a brittle, perfect smile on her face, the same one she wore to every party, every gala, every miserable family dinner.

She was ready for battle.
