Chapter 3

The elevator doors slid shut, encasing Elliana in a box of polished steel and silent air. She stared at her reflection—a pale-faced woman in a shimmering silver dress—and let out a long, trembling breath she felt like she'd been holding for eight years.

There was no gut-wrenching sob. No wave of despair. Instead, a strange, buoyant lightness bloomed in her chest. The suffocating weight of Preston, of his endless expectations, of his casual, everyday cruelties, was finally gone.

When the elevator reached the lobby, she stepped out into the cold New York night. The bracing autumn air hit her bare shoulders like a shock of electricity, clearing the last remnants of fog from her mind. She started walking, her heels clicking rhythmically against the pavement, with no destination in mind other than away.

Her phone began to vibrate incessantly in her purse. Mutual friends, no doubt, sent by Preston to harass her into submission. She ignored them all, finally switching the device to airplane mode. The sudden silence was a profound blessing.

Ten blocks later, she found a 24-hour diner, its flickering neon sign a harsh but welcome beacon. She slid into a cracked vinyl booth and ordered a black coffee, wrapping her freezing hands around the thick ceramic mug.

As the bitter warmth seeped into her palms, reality began to set in. She had no apartment. She would have to resign from her design position at Vance Industries tomorrow. And, inevitably, she would have to face her mother.

The thought of Sharon Castillo made the lightness in Elliana's chest curdle into a familiar, toxic dread. Sharon worshipped Preston Vance and the lavish lifestyle he provided. To her, Preston wasn't a future son-in-law; he was a winning lottery ticket.

Bracing herself, Elliana switched off airplane mode. A flood of notifications instantly poured in. Dozens of missed calls, almost all of them from her mother.

A new text message popped up, the preview alone practically screaming off the screen. Elliana opened it, her eyes scanning the block of text.

"Elliana Castillo, have you completely lost your mind?! Preston just called me, absolutely devastated. He said you threw a tantrum and walked out over some meaningless girl on a boat! Grow up, Elliana! Men of his stature have needs, it's a fact of life. Do you really think you can survive out there on your own? You're almost thirty! Without his money and connections, you're nothing but a struggling nobody. Go back to his penthouse right now, get on your knees, and beg for his forgiveness before he replaces you with someone younger!"

Elliana stared at the glowing screen. A year ago, a message like this would have sent her into a spiral of anxiety and guilt. She would have doubted herself, folded into a smaller version of herself, and crawled back to Preston just to keep the peace.

But tonight, reading her mother's vicious, mocking words, Elliana felt nothing but a profound, icy disgust.

She remembered the girl she used to be before Preston—the fiercely independent, relentless girl who had worked three jobs to pay for her own design degree while her mother gambled away the rent money. She had built her own spine of steel, only to let Preston and her mother bend it for eight years.

Never again.

A cold, sharp smile touched Elliana's lips. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, her keystrokes hard and deliberate.

"I'd rather be a ‘nobody' than a well-fed whore in a golden cage. If you want his money so badly, Mother, you go marry him. I'm done being your meal ticket."

She hit send. Before the delivery receipt could even register, she tapped her mother's profile and hit Block.

The digital severing felt like a physical chain snapping. She took a slow sip of her black coffee, the bitter taste perfectly matching her mood. A storm was coming, yes, but for the first time in her life, she was the one bringing the thunder.

Just as she set the mug down, a new message from an unknown number appeared at the top of her screen.

"Miss Castillo, good evening. My name is Hayes, estate manager for the Marshall family. I apologize for the intrusion at this hour, but I would like to request a meeting with you at your earliest convenience. It concerns a highly confidential proposal that will be of significant interest to you."

The Marshall family.

Elliana's heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat. In the hierarchy of New York's elite, the Vances were merely wealthy. The Marshalls, however, were an empire. They were old money, the apex predators of the city, wielding a terrifying level of power that ran deeper than anyone truly understood.

She didn't know anyone named Marshall. Her first instinct was to dismiss it as a cruel prank. But the tone of the message was impeccably formal. It included an official encrypted email address and a secure callback link. This wasn't a casual text from one of Preston's frat-boy friends.

Her mind raced. Why would the most powerful family in the city be contacting her, a newly unemployed, newly single woman, at her absolute lowest point?

She looked out the diner window at the glittering, unforgiving skyline of Manhattan. A million lights, and not one of them felt like it belonged to her. She had just burned her entire life to the ground. She had no money, no home, and no family backing her.

Freedom, she realized with a chilling clarity, wasn't free. It required leverage. It required power.

If she wanted to truly escape Preston's reach and ensure he couldn't destroy her career out of spite, she needed a shield he couldn't pierce. This bizarre invitation, whatever it entailed, was the only unexpected variable in her ruined life.

She took a deep breath, her posture straightening in the cheap vinyl booth. She typed a reply to the unknown number, her hands completely steady.

"Mr. Hayes, hello. I am available tomorrow morning."

The response was almost instantaneous, as if they had been watching her type.

"Thank you, Miss Castillo. A car will be waiting for you outside your apartment building at 10 a.m. Rest assured, this matter will be handled with the utmost discretion."

They knew exactly where she was.

The confirmation sent a shiver of apprehension down her spine, but it also solidified the terrifying reality of their power. They were watching.
