Chapter 3

Charlotte had always believed there was a limit to how much humiliation a person could endure before something inside them finally broke.

She discovered she was wrong three days after Vanessa moved into the Whitmore mansion.

At seven o'clock on a Tuesday morning, Charlotte was carrying a tray of breakfast upstairs when Vanessa's voice echoed through the hallway.

"Charlotte, I don't want orange juice anymore. Can you make fresh strawberry juice instead?"

Charlotte stopped outside the bedroom door and stared at the tray in her hands.

She had already spent nearly an hour preparing breakfast.

Eggs. Toast. Fruit. Fresh juice.

Everything Vanessa had specifically requested the night before.

Charlotte took a slow breath.

"Vanessa, I already made the juice you asked for."

Vanessa sat up against the headboard and frowned as though Charlotte had personally offended her.

"Well, I changed my mind."

Before Charlotte could answer, Margaret appeared in the hallway.

"Then go make another one."

Charlotte looked at her.

"She just changed her mind."

Margaret's expression darkened immediately.

"And she's carrying my grandchild."

The conversation was over.

At least for everyone except Charlotte.

Twenty minutes later, she returned with fresh strawberry juice.

Vanessa took one sip.

Then pushed the glass away.

"I don't like it."

Charlotte stood silently.

She wasn't even surprised anymore.

The situation only became worse as the days passed.

Vanessa treated the mansion as if she owned it.

She called Charlotte dozens of times a day.

Sometimes it was because she wanted a snack.

Sometimes it was because she couldn't find the television remote.

Sometimes it was because she didn't feel like walking downstairs to get a bottle of water.

One afternoon Charlotte was folding laundry when her phone rang.

Charlotte answered.

"What do you need?"

"I want ice cream."

Charlotte glanced at the clock.

"There's ice cream in the freezer."

"I know."

Vanessa sounded annoyed.

"I want you to bring it upstairs."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

"You can walk downstairs."

Vanessa immediately gasped.

"I can't believe you're speaking to me like this."

Charlotte almost laughed.

Instead she hung up.

Five minutes later Margaret stormed into the laundry room.

"Have you completely lost your mind?"

Charlotte looked up.

"What now?"

Margaret folded her arms.

"Vanessa asked for ice cream."

"So?"

"So she shouldn't have to ask twice."

Charlotte stared at her.

"She's pregnant, not disabled."

Margaret's face hardened.

"That baby is more important than your attitude."

The words lingered long after Margaret left.

Not because they were new.

Because they were becoming impossible to ignore.

Everything in the house revolved around Vanessa.

The baby hadn't even been born yet and somehow Charlotte already felt invisible.

The worst moments always happened when Ryan was around.

Every time Vanessa called his name, he immediately appeared.

Every time Vanessa complained, Ryan listened.

Every time Charlotte tried to explain herself, Ryan acted as though she was creating unnecessary drama.

One evening Charlotte was cleaning the kitchen when Vanessa walked in.

"I want pasta."

Charlotte glanced at the clock.

It was almost eleven.

"Dinner ended three hours ago."

Vanessa shrugged.

"The baby wants pasta."

Charlotte returned to wiping the counter.

"You can ask one of the staff."

Vanessa smiled.

"No, I want you to make it."

Ryan entered the kitchen just in time to hear the conversation.

"What's going on?"

Vanessa's lower lip trembled instantly.

Charlotte had never seen anyone switch emotions so quickly.

"I just asked for something to eat."

Ryan turned toward Charlotte.

"Then make it."

Charlotte dropped the cloth onto the counter.

"You can't be serious."

Ryan frowned.

"She's hungry."

"It's almost midnight."

"And?"

Charlotte stared at him.

The exhaustion she had been carrying for years suddenly felt heavier.

"Do you hear yourself?"

Ryan's expression grew colder.

"Do you have a problem helping someone who's pregnant?"

Charlotte laughed quietly.

The sound surprised even her.

"What I have a problem with is being treated like a servant in my own home."

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

"Nobody is treating you like a servant."

Charlotte looked around the kitchen.

Then back at him.

"Really?"

Ryan didn't answer.

Because they both knew the truth.

That night Charlotte couldn't sleep.

The house had become unbearable.

Every room reminded her that she no longer belonged there.

The master bedroom felt empty because Ryan spent most evenings with Vanessa.

The dining room felt hostile because Margaret used every meal as an opportunity to compare Charlotte with the woman carrying the child she desperately wanted.

Even the kitchen no longer felt like a safe place.

By the time sunrise arrived, Charlotte had barely slept two hours.

She was making coffee when Margaret entered.

The older woman looked unusually cheerful.

Charlotte immediately knew she wasn't going to enjoy whatever came next.

Margaret sat down and smiled.

"Vanessa had another doctor's appointment yesterday."

Charlotte kept pouring coffee.

"That's nice."

"The baby is healthy."

Charlotte nodded.

"I'm glad."

Margaret studied her for a moment.

Then she said the thing she had clearly been waiting to say.

"Imagine how different your life would be if you could have done the same thing."

Charlotte froze.

Margaret continued.

"I spent years hoping Ryan would have a child with you."

Her smile disappeared.

"At some point I had to accept reality."

Charlotte placed the coffee pot down carefully because she wasn't sure she trusted herself to keep holding it.

"What reality is that?"

Margaret's voice sharpened.

"The reality that my son wasted five years on a woman who couldn't give him a family."

Charlotte left the room before she said something she couldn't take back.

Later that afternoon she sat alone inside her bedroom.

The house was quiet.

For once nobody needed anything.

Nobody was calling her name.

Nobody was demanding something impossible.

Charlotte stared at her phone.

One contact had remained untouched for years.

Damien Sinclair.

Her uncle.

The younger brother of her father.

After her parents died, Damien had tried to stay involved in her life.

Charlotte had slowly drifted away.

Mostly because Ryan never liked him.

Ryan always claimed Damien was controlling.

At the time, Charlotte believed him.

Now she wasn't so sure.

Her thumb hovered over the screen for several seconds before she finally pressed call.

The line connected almost immediately.

"Charlotte?"

The familiar voice caught her off guard.

For a moment she couldn't speak.

Damien immediately noticed.

"What's wrong?"

Charlotte felt tears gathering in her eyes.

"I..."

The single word broke apart halfway through.

Damien's tone changed instantly.

"Charlotte, what happened?"

The concern in his voice felt so unfamiliar that it almost hurt.

Nobody had sounded worried about her in a very long time.

A few minutes later she found herself telling him everything.

The fertility accusations.

Margaret. Vanessa. Ryan.

Every humiliating detail she had spent years trying to excuse.

Damien remained silent until she finished.

When he finally spoke, his voice was dangerously calm.

"Ryan brought his pregnant mistress into your house?"

"Yes."

"And his mother expects you to take care of her?"

Charlotte laughed bitterly.

"Apparently that's my job now."

Several seconds passed.

Then Damien said something she never expected.

"Pack a bag."

Charlotte blinked.

"What?"

"I'm coming to get you."

"Damien—"

"No."

His voice cut through her protest immediately.

"You've spent years protecting people who don't deserve it."

Charlotte closed her eyes.

Part of her wanted to argue.

Another part felt relieved.

For the first time in a long time, someone was on her side.

Before ending the call, Damien asked one final question.

"Have you ever actually had your fertility checked independently?"

Charlotte frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Charlotte sat upright.

The question had never occurred to her.

Damien's voice remained calm.

"Let's start there."

Charlotte stared out the bedroom window.

For the first time in years, a small crack appeared in the version of reality she had accepted.

Maybe a lot of things weren't right.

And maybe the answers were waiting somewhere she had never thought to look.

The next morning, Damien Sinclair arrived at the Whitmore mansion and personally drove Charlotte to a private hospital.

She had no idea that the test waiting for her there would change everything she believed about her marriage.
