Chapter 1

It's hard to even remember how much Charlotte Sinclair suffered before she discovered that her husband— not her —was the one who couldn't have children.

……

The fever started before sunrise, but Charlotte Sinclair still got out of bed before everyone else because breakfast had to be ready by seven, Margaret Whitmore liked her coffee with exactly one spoonful of brown sugar, and Ryan Whitmore hated seeing the house messy when he came downstairs.

By the time Charlotte carried the last plate to the dining table, her shirt was damp with sweat, her fingers were trembling around the edge of the porcelain, and every breath scraped through her throat as if she had swallowed broken glass.

Margaret sat at the head of the table, dressed in silk and pearls, looking at Charlotte the way she always looked at her, as if Charlotte were a stain on the expensive white carpet instead of the woman who had been married to her son for five years.

“You look terrible,” Margaret said, setting down her coffee cup with a sharp click. “Are you sick again, or are you just trying to make everyone feel sorry for you?”

Charlotte forced herself to stand straight. “I have a fever, but breakfast is ready.”

Margaret gave a cold laugh. “A fever is not an achievement, Charlotte. Normal women can get sick and still give their husbands children. You can’t even manage that.”

The room went quiet for a moment, but Charlotte knew better than to hope that silence meant shame.

Ryan walked in a few seconds later, dressed in a dark suit, his phone already in his hand. He barely glanced at Charlotte before sitting beside his mother, and when Margaret turned her cruel smile toward him, Charlotte felt the familiar tightness in her chest.

“Ryan, tell your wife that looking weak at the breakfast table won’t make me forget she has wasted five years of this family’s time.”

Charlotte looked at him before she could stop herself.

Ryan picked up his fork, sighed as if both women were ruining his morning, and said, “Charlotte, my mother is old-fashioned, so don’t take everything she says so seriously.”

“That’s not an apology,” Charlotte said softly.

Ryan finally looked at her, but there was no warmth in his eyes. “I’m not asking Mom to apologize every time you feel hurt. She wants a grandchild, and honestly, I don’t think that makes her a villain.”

Margaret smiled with satisfaction while Charlotte stood there with one hand pressed against the back of a chair, trying not to sway in front of them.

“I’ve done everything the doctors asked me to do,” Charlotte said. “Every test, every appointment, every treatment you wanted me to try.”

“And yet there is still no baby,” Margaret said immediately. “Maybe the doctors are being polite because they feel sorry for you.”

Ryan did not tell his mother to stop, and somehow that hurt more than the insult itself, because Charlotte had spent five years learning that he would always choose comfort over loyalty when she was the one being humiliated.

She had once believed Ryan was the kindest man in the world.

After her parents died, when grief had left her unable to sleep or eat, Ryan had been the one who sat beside her, held her hand, and told her she did not have to face the world alone.

She had believed him so completely that she gave up fighting for control of the Sinclair family business, handed her dividends and accounts to him because he said handling money would only make her more tired, and buried every dream she had once carried because Ryan said what he wanted most was a peaceful home.

Now she spent her days scrubbing floors inside that peaceful home while his mother called her useless and he told her to be patient.

The phone in Ryan’s hand lit up.

Charlotte saw the name before he turned the screen away.

Vanessa Hart.

Margaret saw it too, but instead of looking angry, she smiled in a way that made Charlotte’s stomach twist.

“Is Vanessa meeting you today?” Margaret asked.

Ryan’s expression softened, and Charlotte hated herself for noticing how quickly it happened.

“She needs help picking something up,” he said.

Charlotte’s fingers tightened against the chair. “You told me you had meetings all day.”

Ryan pushed back his chair and stood. “I do have meetings.”

“Then why is Vanessa asking you to go shopping with her?”

Margaret’s face immediately hardened. “Watch your tone.”

Charlotte ignored her and looked only at Ryan. “I’m your wife, Ryan. I’m standing here sick, and you’re leaving to spend the day with another woman.”

Ryan slid his phone into his pocket, his patience already thinning. “Vanessa is a friend, and I’m not going to explain every business relationship to you just because you’re insecure.”

“A friend doesn’t call you at midnight,” Charlotte said, her voice shaking. “A friend doesn’t send you heart emojis. A friend doesn’t need you every single day while your wife is treated like a servant in your own house.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened. “You’re embarrassing yourself.”

Margaret slammed her hand on the table. “You should be grateful my son still comes home to you at all.”

Charlotte turned to her, dizzy and burning and too exhausted to pretend the words did not destroy her. “I have cooked for this family, cleaned this house, managed your guests, served your friends, and swallowed every insult you threw at me because Ryan kept telling me to endure it for the sake of peace.”

Ryan stepped closer, lowering his voice in warning. “Charlotte, stop.”

She looked at him and wished he looked even slightly worried that she could barely stand. “Do you even care that I’m sick?”

For a second, Ryan’s face changed, but the moment vanished before it could become anything useful.

“Take some medicine and rest after you finish cleaning up,” he said. “Mom has guests coming later, and I don’t want the house looking like you fell apart because of a little fever.”

A little fever.

Charlotte almost laughed, but her throat hurt too much.

Ryan left less than ten minutes later, and Margaret made Charlotte clear the table even though the edges of the room kept blurring.

By afternoon, Charlotte’s fever had climbed so high that she had to sit on the kitchen floor while the soup simmered on the stove. Her hands were shaking too badly to hold the ladle, and when she tried to stand, a wave of nausea rolled through her so violently that she had to grip the counter to stay upright.

She called Ryan first.

The phone rang long enough that she almost gave up.

When he finally answered, music and laughter spilled through the speaker, and Vanessa’s voice floated in the background, light and playful, asking if he liked the blue one better.

“Ryan,” Charlotte whispered, pressing a hand to her forehead. “I need help.”

There was a pause, followed by the faint sound of him moving somewhere quieter. “What is it now?”

“I have a high fever, and I think I need to go to the hospital.”

He sighed, and the sound cut through her more sharply than the fever. “Charlotte, I’m in the middle of something.”

“I can’t drive like this.”

“Then call a doctor.”

“I’m scared,” she said, hating how small her voice sounded. “Please come home.”

“Vanessa needs me right now, and I can’t drop everything because you didn’t take medicine on time.”

Charlotte closed her eyes, and for the first time that day, the tears slipped down her face without her permission. “Your wife is asking you for help.”

“My wife is acting dramatic because she doesn’t like being alone,” Ryan said coldly. “I’ll come back when I’m done.”

The call ended before Charlotte could answer.

She stared at the dark screen, trying to breathe through the pain in her chest, but the fever made the world tilt again, and desperation forced her to call Margaret.

Margaret answered with impatience already sharpened in her voice. “What do you want?”

“Margaret,” Charlotte said, barely able to speak clearly. “I’m really sick, and Ryan won’t come home.”

“And why is that my problem?”

“I think I might pass out.”

Margaret laughed under her breath. “Then lie down.”

“I need someone to help me get to the hospital.”

“You need a lot of things, Charlotte, but the one thing this family needed from you was a child, and you couldn’t even do that.”

Charlotte’s grip on the phone weakened. “Please.”

“Don’t beg me like you’re some poor abandoned victim,” Margaret snapped. “If you had any shame, you would have left this house years ago instead of trapping my son in a dead marriage.”

The words blurred with the pounding in Charlotte’s ears.

“I loved him,” Charlotte whispered.

Margaret’s voice turned crueler, almost pleased. “Love doesn’t matter when a woman can’t give a man a family. If you really want to do something useful for Ryan, you might as well die sooner and make room for someone who can.”

Charlotte did not answer because her body had finally reached the point where even pain felt distant.

The phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

She tried to call out, but no sound came.

The ceiling above her stretched and twisted as she collapsed beside the kitchen island, and in the last few seconds before darkness swallowed her, Charlotte thought of Ryan standing beside her parents’ graves years ago, promising that he would never let her be alone.

When the housekeeper arrived the next morning, the mansion was too quiet.

“Mrs. Whitmore?” she called from the entryway.

There was no reply.

She walked through the living room, then the dining room, and when she reached the kitchen, she found Charlotte lying motionless on the cold marble floor with her face as pale as wax and her body burning with fever.

“Oh my God, Mrs. Whitmore!”

The housekeeper dropped her bag, rushed to Charlotte’s side, and called emergency services with shaking hands.

By the time the paramedics carried Charlotte out of the house, Ryan was still across town with Vanessa, and Margaret had not called back once to see whether the woman she hated had survived the night.
