Chapter 3

"We don't have a spot for you, Nina." Director Silva shoved my resume across the glass desk.

"I danced principal for three years." I pointed to the glowing reviews attached to the back of the folder. "My leg is healing. I just need a studio to practice in."

"Your leg is a liability." Silva leaned back in her leather chair. "And frankly, so is your reputation."

"My reputation?"

"Gabby Lawson made it very clear how you behave backstage. She told everyone you stole her routines."

"That is a lie!" I slammed my hand on the desk. "I choreographed those pieces!"

Silva didn't flinch. "Without Andrew Monroe funding the arts, you hold no power here. We don't want your drama."

I snatched my papers. "You're making a mistake."

"Shut the door on your way out," she replied.

I limped down the hallway. Two junior dancers giggled near the water cooler as I passed.

"Look at her," one whispered loudly. "No rich husband to back her up anymore. She's nothing without his money."

I kept my chin high and pushed through the exit doors.

In the lobby, a flat-screen TV blasted the morning news. The anchor's voice echoed through the empty hall.

"Andrew Monroe, CEO of Monroe Industries, made a stunning announcement today."

I stopped walking.

Andrew stood at a press podium, Gabby clinging to his arm. She wore a pristine white dress, playing the perfect, innocent partner.

"Gabby is the woman who stood by me," Andrew told the reporters, smiling down at her. "She pushed me to succeed. She is my future, and I am proud to have her by my side."

A reporter shoved a microphone forward. "What about your wife, Nina? Didn't she support you during the early years?"

"Nina and I are moving in different directions," Andrew answered smoothly. "Gabby understands the demands of my world. She fits perfectly into my life."

I stared at the screen. My chest tightened. Four years of marriage, erased in a thirty-second soundbite. He was rewriting our history on national television.

My phone buzzed. A text from Gabby glowed on the screen.

*Come to the Plaza Gala tonight. I want to apologize publicly. Let's make peace.*

I knew it was a trap. But I needed a job, and the gala hosted every major ballet director in the city. If I could just speak to them directly, away from Gabby's rumors, I could secure an audition.

I wore my last good dress, a simple black sheath.

The moment I stepped into the ballroom, camera flashes blinded me.

"Over here, Nina!" a photographer shouted.

"How does it feel to be replaced?" another yelled, shoving a lens in my face.

Gabby materialized through the crowd. She wore a stunning diamond collar. The Monroe family heirloom. Andrew's favorite piece from the estate vault.

"You actually came," Gabby laughed, signaling the photographers to keep shooting.

"You said you wanted to apologize," I said, keeping my voice steady.

"Oh, sweetie." Gabby touched the diamonds at her throat, her lips curling into a wicked smile. "I just wanted everyone to see the contrast. Look at you. You look exhausted."

"You're pathetic," I spat, turning to leave.

Gabby grabbed my wrist. Her manicured nails dug into my skin.

"Some women think sticking by a man through his youth earns them a lifetime of glory," she announced loudly.

The cameras snapped rapidly, capturing every angle of my humiliation.

"But once a man succeeds," Gabby continued, her voice echoing over the flashbulbs, "he chooses someone better suited to stand beside him. You were just a stepping stone, Nina."

Andrew approached, a champagne flute in his hand. He wore a tailored tuxedo, looking every bit the billionaire I helped build.

"Tell her to release me," I demanded, locking eyes with my husband.

Andrew took a sip of his drink. He didn't even glance at Gabby's grip on my arm.

"Stop causing a scene, Nina," he ordered, his tone laced with irritation. "I told you to stop pestering us. You're embarrassing yourself."

"I'm embarrassing myself?" I yanked my arm free. "You invited me here to humiliate me."

"No one cares about you anymore," Andrew stated flatly. "Go home. If you have one."

He turned his back, guiding Gabby toward the VIP lounge. The crowd parted for them, leaving me entirely alone under the harsh glare of the chandeliers.

I pushed through the heavy glass doors and stumbled into the freezing rain.

My right calf cramped instantly. A sharp, tearing pain shot up my thigh, radiating from the burn scars.

I gasped, clutching my leg. My knee hit the wet pavement with a sickening crack.

"Get up," I whispered to myself, my teeth chattering.

My body refused to move. The cold seeped into my bones. My ballet dreams, my marriage, my dignity—all crushed under Gabby's heels and Andrew's indifference.

I pressed my forehead against the wet concrete. I was done. I had nothing left to fight for. The rain washed away my tears, leaving only a hollow void in my chest.

Tires splashed through the puddles. A sleek black Maybach rolled to a stop inches from my hands.

The rear door opened. A pair of polished leather oxfords stepped onto the street.

A heavy wool coat draped over my trembling shoulders. It smelled of cedar and expensive cigars.

"Why did my nephew hurt you like this?" a deep, resonant voice asked.

I jerked my head up.

A man stood over me, holding a black umbrella. Silver lined his dark hair. His jaw was sharp, his eyes a piercing, calculating gray. The resemblance to Andrew was undeniable, but this man radiated a terrifying authority Andrew could never fake.

Leonard Monroe.

Andrew's uncle. The true founder of the Monroe empire. The man who vanished overseas years ago, controlling the family's wealth from the shadows.

"Mr. Monroe," I choked out, shivering under his coat.

He crouched down, ignoring the rain soaking his tailored suit. His gaze locked onto my face, tracing the bruises and the sheer exhaustion etched into my features.

"I know everything they did to you, Nina," Leonard said, his tone dangerously calm.

"They took everything," I managed to say, my voice cracking. "My career. My home."

"They took what I allowed them to have," Leonard corrected, his voice cutting through the sound of the rain. "Andrew is a fool playing with my money. And Gabby is a parasite feeding off his stupidity."

I blinked, struggling to process his words. "You've been watching us?"

"I've been watching you, Nina," he clarified, his gaze never leaving mine. "I saw the grace you brought to that family. I saw the sacrifices you made to build Andrew into a man the board would respect."

Leonard reached out. His thumb brushed a wet strand of hair from my cheek. The touch sent a strange jolt through my frozen skin.

"You think you lost a husband," he murmured, his eyes darkening with a fierce, protective fury. "But they don't know they destroyed the person I value most."

I stared at him, my heart pounding against my ribs. "What do you mean?"

"I mean your suffering ends tonight," Leonard stated. He stood up, offering me his hand. "Get in the car, Nina. We have an empire to dismantle."

I looked at his outstretched palm. Taking it meant crossing a line I could never uncross. It meant declaring war on my husband.

I placed my hand in his.
