Chapter 3

I had been sitting in the same corner for three hours.

The coffee shop two blocks from the old office. The one Cameron and I used to hit every Friday morning before the building filled up. I came here on autopilot and didn't have the energy to go anywhere else, so I stayed. Ordered one coffee. Let it go cold. Ordered another. Let that go cold too.

The morning crowd came and went. The lunch crowd came and went. Outside, San Francisco kept moving like nothing had burned down this morning. Beautiful and completely indifferent.

I had my bag open on the table in front of me. Not looking for anything specific. Just holding on to something.

My hand found the card at the bottom. Worn at the corners. I'd been carrying it since the day Veyra got incorporated. Danielle Brooks, Attorney at Law. She'd handed it to me personally, while Lana was across the room signing her name to something. "Call me if you ever need anything," she'd said. "Not a company call. A personal one."

I turned the card over in my fingers.

I have nothing. I thought. What exactly am I calling about?

I called anyway.

Two rings.

"Naya." Her voice was warm. Steady. And underneath the warmth, something that made my spine straighten without me deciding to. "I've been waiting for your call."

I raised my eyebrows. "You heard."

"I heard. Come in today." A short pause. "Can you do that?"

I was already standing.

"Yeah," I said. "I can do that."

Her office was not what I expected from someone who'd spent three years staying quiet.

High ceilings. Clean lines. The kind of space that said power without saying anything at all. No clutter. No framed motivational quotes. One photograph on the shelf behind her desk and nothing else on the walls except her law degrees.

Danielle opened the door herself. No assistant. Closed it behind me.

She wore a dark blazer, natural hair pulled back, reading glasses pushed up on her head. Warm eyes. But there was something underneath the warmth. Something patient and deliberate and absolutely unafraid.

"Sit," she said. "Coffee?"

"Please."

She poured two cups without asking how I took mine. Set one in front of me, sat across from me, and folded her hands on the desk.

"I want to ask you something first," she said.

I crossed my legs slowly. "Okay."

"When you signed the founding documents, all of them, not just the incorporation papers, did anyone walk you through the IP addendum?"

I thought about it. Really thought.

"Lana handled most of the contract prep," I said. "I read everything before I signed. But there were a lot of documents. And it was three days before launch, so Cameron was..." I stopped. Cleared my throat. "I read it. I just didn't have anyone explain it to me."

Danielle nodded like that was exactly what she expected.

"That matters," she said quietly. "That's going to matter a lot."

She opened the folder on her desk. "As your original incorporation lawyer, I kept copies of every founding document. Not because I anticipated something like this. Because that's what I do." A small pause. "And because I believed in what you were building. I wanted to make sure nothing happened to it."

She slid the first document across the desk.

I picked it up.

My eyes found my name. Then the number next to it. Then I read it again because numbers like that don't land right the first time.

Fifty-one percent.

My name. Unrevoked. Binding. Not adjusted. Not

My hand started shaking.

I pressed it flat against the paper. Held it there. Felt the shaking move up my forearm and stop, because I would not let it go further than that.

"This is still valid?" My voice came out lower than I intended.

"Every word," Danielle said.

I stared at the page. Something built underneath my ribs. Quiet and pressurized. Like a sealed room slowly filling with something that needed to get out.

"They didn't revoke it."

"The operating agreement governed how Veyra operated. It never replaced the founding ownership agreement." she said.

A short laugh came out of me. Disbelieving. Sharp. It stopped as fast as it started.

I sat very still. Fuming underneath the surface. Keeping every single thing locked behind my face while my brain caught fire.

Then Danielle turned the page.

"Now I need you to listen carefully," she said. "Because this is the part they missed."

She pointed to the addendum at the back of the document. The one I'd read at midnight, three years ago, exhausted and trusting that everything was standard.

"Naya, you never transferred ownership of The Companion to Veyra." She said it slowly. Like she wanted each word to land before the next one arrived. "You granted them an exclusive commercialization license. The right to operate it, market it, sell access to it. That is what Veyra has." She paused. "The underlying technology, the architecture, the algorithms, every line of original code, every patent filed under your name... that was never Veyra's to take."

I didn't move.

"You didn't lose your company, Naya." She held my gaze without blinking. "They just forgot to check what they actually owned."

The room went very quiet.

My coffee was cold.

I noticed the traffic outside.

The air conditioning hummed.

Somehow, the entire world had kept moving while mine had just changed direction.

"They thought they were stealing my company," I said.

"Yes."

"But they were never touching my invention."

"Never."

I sat up slowly.

Something moved across my face before I could stop it. A grin. Small and quiet and sharp in a way that had nothing to do with happiness and everything to do with a door cracking open in the dark.

"Tell me everything."
