Chapter 4

The call came on a Tuesday afternoon. I was arranging white roses in the foyer when my phone buzzed. Dr. Chen's office. I almost let it go to voicemail.

"Mrs. Gordon? This is Melissa from Dr. Chen's office. Your bloodwork came back. The doctor would like to see you tomorrow if possible."

My hand stilled on a stem. "Is something wrong?"

"No, nothing like that. Just some results she'd like to discuss in person."

I made the appointment. I set my phone down. The roses were perfect. White petals against dark wood. I stared at them until they blurred.

The next morning, I told Cain I had a hair appointment. He kissed my cheek and left for the office. I took a taxi to Dr. Chen's clinic on the Upper East Side.

The waiting room was full of women. Some had husbands with them. Partners. Mothers. They held hands. They whispered. They smiled at their phones.

I sat alone by the window.

"Estella Gordon?"

I followed the nurse down the hall. She weighed me. Took my blood pressure. Left me in an examination room with pastel paintings of beaches. Places I'd never been.

Dr. Chen came in with a folder. She was smiling. That's how I knew.

"Estella," she said warmly. "Congratulations. You're pregnant."

The room tilted. I gripped the edge of the table.

"How far along?"

"Based on your levels and the ultrasound we did last month, I'd say about twenty weeks. Five months."

Five months. I'd been carrying this child through every message from Zaria. Through every lie Cain told. Through the night I found the divorce attorney and the day I liquidated my accounts.

"That's wonderful news," Dr. Chen continued. "I know how long you've been trying. How hard this journey has been."

I nodded. My throat was closed.

"I'd like to schedule you for a detailed ultrasound next week. And we should start discussing your birth plan—"

"I need to think," I said.

She paused. "Of course. This is a lot to process. But Estella, you're healthy. The pregnancy looks good. Everything we've hoped for."

Everything we've hoped for.

I let myself imagine it. Thirty seconds. That's all I allowed.

A nursery in the penthouse. Pale yellow walls. A crib by the window. Cain holding our daughter. Our son. Teaching them to walk. To talk. Being the father he'd promised to be.

But that father didn't exist. That man was a fiction. The real Cain was across town right now, probably texting Zaria. Planning how to bring her baby home. Planning how to make me raise it as my own.

This child—my child—would be born into that lie. Would grow up watching me pretend. Would learn that love looked like performance and marriage looked like endurance.

I couldn't do it. I wouldn't.

"I need an abortion," I said.

Dr. Chen's face changed. "Estella—"

"I need one. As soon as possible."

"You're twenty weeks. That's—" She stopped. Started again. "That's a significant decision. Have you discussed this with your husband?"

"No."

"I really think you should take some time. Talk to Cain. This is something you've wanted for so long—"

"I don't want it anymore," I said. My voice was flat. Empty. "Can you do the procedure or do I need to find someone else?"

She looked at me for a long moment. I saw her trying to understand. Trying to find the logic. There was none. Not one she could see.

"I can refer you to a colleague," she said quietly. "Dr. Patel. She specializes in later terminations. But Estella, I'm required to inform you that at twenty weeks, this is a two-day process. It's not simple. It's not easy."

"Nothing about this is easy," I said.

She wrote down a name. A number. She handed it to me. Her hand was shaking.

"Are you sure?" she asked.

"I've never been more sure of anything."

I called Dr. Patel from the taxi. I scheduled the appointment for the following Wednesday. The receptionist was kind. Professional. She didn't ask questions.

I went home. I changed into a dress Cain liked. I made reservations at the restaurant where he proposed. When he came home that evening, I kissed him.

"Let's go out," I said. "Just us. Like old times."

His face lit up. "Yeah? What's the occasion?"

"No occasion. I just love you."

He pulled me close. He buried his face in my hair. "God, I love you too. So much, Estella. You know that, right?"

"I know," I said.

We went to dinner. We drank wine. He told me about his day. I laughed at his stories. I touched his hand across the table. The other diners probably thought we looked happy.

That Friday, there was a charity luncheon at the Plaza. Cain needed me there. His arm candy. His perfect wife. I wore a pale blue gown. Valentino. It skimmed my body without clinging. Nobody could tell.

I smiled for photographs. I made small talk with Mrs. Steinberg about her daughter's wedding. I ate salmon and asparagus and laughed when Cain whispered something in my ear.

"You're perfect," he murmured. "Absolutely perfect."

I kissed his cheek. I tasted expensive scotch and lies.

That night, he held me in bed. His hand rested on my stomach. Right over the place where our child was growing. The child he didn't know existed. The child that would be gone by next week.

"I can't wait to start our family," he said sleepily. "It's going to happen soon. I can feel it."

"Me too," I whispered.

He fell asleep. I lay awake in the dark. I felt nothing. No guilt. No grief. Just the cold clarity of what had to be done.

Wednesday morning came. Cain had a board meeting. He left at seven-thirty. I waited until eight. Then I took a taxi to Dr. Patel's clinic in Midtown.

The waiting room was different from Dr. Chen's. Quieter. No happy couples. Just women sitting alone with their choices.

They called my name. I followed the nurse. I changed into a gown. I lay on the table under bright lights.

Dr. Patel was kind. Efficient. She explained the procedure. She asked if I was sure. I said yes.

She asked if I wanted to see the ultrasound. I said no.

The procedure took hours. Two days, like they'd said. I won't describe it. Some things don't need to be shown.

When it was over, I dressed slowly. My hands were steady. The nurse gave me instructions. Medications. A follow-up appointment.

I walked out into the gray afternoon. The city moved around me. Taxis. People. Life.

I took a cab home. I changed my clothes. I started dinner.

Cain came home at seven. He kissed me. He asked about my day. I said it was quiet. Uneventful.

We ate pasta. We watched television. We went to bed.

He never knew. He would never know.

Not until I wanted him to.

Not until it was too late.
