I Rejected My Alpha After He Chose His Mistress Chapter 1

At 9:40 on a Tuesday morning, my thumb split open on a wax seal that had my own name on it.

I was restocking the clinic — dried yarrow, willow bark, the last of the crushed mugwort — and Shay had left her Gamma correspondence stacked on the desk by the window, the way she always did, like the room belonged to her and not to the pack's only healer. I wasn't looking for anything. I moved the stack to set down a jar.

The envelope on top carried the Lycan King's seal. Gold wax, the crescent stamp. Royal Healers, Office of Appointments.

My name was on it. Freya Pierce, Luna, Ironhold Pack.

Under it sat a second sheet, unsealed, already signed.

I, Freya Pierce, wish to formally withdraw my name from consideration, as my duties to Ironhold and to my Alpha take precedence at this time. I recommend Gamma Shay Howell in my place.

The handwriting looped the F the way I never have. Whoever copied me had gotten the P wrong too — too round, too confident. I have a healer's hand. Small, cramped, fast.

I stood there with the jar of mugwort still in my left palm and read it twice more.

Three years. Three nominations. Three times I'd been told the Court had chosen someone else, and three times I'd folded that down inside myself and gone back to stitching Delta warriors at two in the morning.

Something moved in my chest.

Not my heart. Lower and deeper than that, in a place that had been dead since I was eleven years old. A vibration, low, like a truck idling under the floorboards. It ran up the back of my neck and sat behind my teeth.

My wolf. Five years as a Luna who couldn't shift, and she picked *this* to wake up for.

I set the jar down. I folded the forged withdrawal into quarters and put it in the pocket of my apron, and I walked out of the clinic with the vibration still humming in my spine.

Collin's office was on the second floor of the pack house. He didn't look up when I came in. He was signing something, sleeves rolled, and the room smelled like him and, underneath, like her — jasmine perfume layered over his collar, three days deep. I'd been smelling it for years and calling it something else.

I put the letter on his desk and flattened it with my palm.

"Explain this."

He read it. He didn't flinch, didn't reach for it, didn't do a single thing a guilty man does.

"Shay's more useful to the pack at Court," he said. "She has rank, she has presence. She can hold a room full of Lycan lords."

"She can't set a bone."

"She doesn't need to." He capped his pen. "You're wolfless, Freya. You know what they'd do with that at the capital? Every pack there would hear that Ironhold's Luna can't shift. You'd be a liability. Here, you're useful."

"Here I'm invisible."

"Here you're mine." He said it the way you'd read a weather report. "Your place is this house. That's not cruelty. That's an arrangement."

My hands were shaking. I made them stop.

"Pack law gives me the right to appeal an Alpha's decision on a Court appointment before the Beta," I said. "I'm invoking it. Today."

Something passed behind his eyes. Not anger. Boredom, almost — the look of a man who has run this conversation before in his head and already knows the last line.

"Kneel."

The Alpha tone came down on me like a wall of water.

My knees hit the floorboards before I understood I was falling. It went through the bond first — that warm hook behind my mark — and then into every joint, pressing, folding me. My lungs stopped halfway through a breath. My vision went white at the edges.

And then the thing in my chest *shoved*.

It came up so hard I tasted copper. The room tilted sideways. Not submission — I know submission, I've lived in it — this was rage, a wolf throwing her shoulder against a locked door from the inside, and for half a second the pressure on my back eased and my head came up and I looked him in the eye from the floor.

He saw it. I watched him see it. His jaw shifted.

Then the command settled again and pinned me flat, and he stood up, and stepped around his own desk, and looked down at me the way you look at a chair someone left in a doorway.

"The matter's closed."

I got up when he released me. I picked the forged letter off his desk and walked out with it in my fist, and every stair down was a small, clean click in my head: it was never broken. Every appeal I'd filed, every polite letter, every year of waiting. It was never broken. It was built this way, and he built it.

That evening I stood in Beta Kannon Munoz's office and laid the letter on his blotter.

"I'm formally requesting a bond dissolution review," I said. "Under pack law. That's my evidence."

Kannon looked at the paper for a long time. He's a careful man. I watched him read the signature, watched him find the F, watched his mouth go thin — and then I watched him choose. It took him one breath. Less.

"Freya," he said. "I'd have to route this through the Alpha."

And the bond yanked.

It hit the base of my skull and dragged, and my feet turned toward the pack house without asking me. Collin had called it from across the building. I got one look at Kannon — I didn't ask him for anything, I just wrote his face down inside me and kept it — and then I was walking, boots on gravel, arms stiff at my sides, the letter crushed in my hand.

The pack house door was already open. Shay stood in it, holding the gold-sealed envelope against her hip, and she stepped aside to let me past.

"Basement," she said. "He wants your herbs first."
