Chapter 1

When I met Ethan Stone, his family had just gone bankrupt.

He had fallen hard and was at his lowest point.

I stayed with him for eight years and helped him rebuild everything.

We were finally about to get married.

On our engagement day, I was kidnapped by his greatest rival.

When I came back safely, he held his secretary in his arms and looked at me with disgust.

“Jane, you’re no longer pure.”

I felt my heart sink. I let him go and chose to fall into the arms of his rival.

The private room was buzzing with voices, and the mix of smoke and alcohol hit me straight in the head.

I felt sick, so I walked out and went to the restroom.

I stood in front of the mirror and felt cold water run down my arm.

I was finally aware of the world again. When I looked at myself in the mirror, I saw that I was no longer the lively person I once was.

The thought made me chuckle wryly.

Once I felt better, I turned back toward the room.

Just as I reached the door, I overheard the conversation inside.

“Mr. Stone, congratulations. Ms. Lowell returned safely, but she has gone through a lot. You must have been worried sick.”

“Of course. Everyone in Central City knows how much you treasure your girlfriend, Mr. Stone. We’ll definitely be there to offer a toast on the wedding day.”

I thought Ethan Stone would smile, agree, and maybe even talk about how much he loved me.

But he did not.

He let out a mocking laugh and shot a disdainful look at the place where I was seated a moment ago. Then, he reached out, took his secretary’s hand, and toyed with it.

“We can talk about the wedding another time.

“She came back safely, which means she’s tainted. The thought of marrying her disgusts me.”

Everyone present knew what he meant. The moment he said that, someone spoke up.

“That’s true. Who doesn’t want a pure partner?”

Ethan did not deny it. Instead, he pulled Yelena Watson closer and raised his brows smugly.

“Exactly.”

The crowd murmured in agreement. Yelena leaned against him and smiled sweetly.

“Mr. Stone, it’s not like Ms. Lowell chose to be kidnapped. She finally made it back. Shouldn’t you be talking about setting a new date for the engagement?”

Ethan squeezed Yelena’s hand and said disdainfully, “The engagement? She’s not worthy. How dare a tainted woman like her think she can marry me?”

Everyone laughed along, except for one woman near Ethan, who suddenly spoke up.

“Mr. Stone, that’s going too far! You’ve been with Ms. Lowell for eight years. Did that time mean nothing to you?

“Isn’t her life more important than her so-called chastity?”

Yelena immediately shot the woman a mocking glance. She poured Ethan a drink and held the glass up to his lips.

He drank, then spoke with disdain.

“I’d rather she died on the spot. At least then she’d still be untouched.

“Now, she’s alive but defiled.”

That was the moment I pushed the door open. The lively chatter came to an instant halt the second they saw me.

Those who had been mocking me rushed to explain.

“Ms. Lowell, we were only joking. Don’t take it to heart.”

“Of course, Mr. Stone wanted you back safe. After all, you’ve been together for years. How could he really think that way?”

“Yeah, Ms. Lowell, don’t be upset.”

I said nothing and just looked at Ethan. I searched his gaze for even the smallest trace that he was joking.
