Chapter 2

"Is this a joke?" I tapped the paper against the glass partition.

The lab technician shook her head. "I ran the sample twice, Mrs. Hayes. The result is definitive."

My eyes locked onto the bold black letters.

*Excluded as biological mother.*

Not a ninety-nine percent probability. Not a blurred margin of error. I didn't give birth to Oliver.

"Thank you," I murmured, turning away from the desk.

I walked down the sterile white hallway. My knees gave out halfway to the exit. I slid down the wall, the cold linoleum biting through my skirt. I pulled out my phone and set a timer for exactly three minutes.

Tears spilled over my cheeks. I pressed my palms against my eyes, letting the sobs rack my chest. Ten years of bedtime stories. Ten years of scraped knees and birthday cakes. All built on a lie.

The alarm chirped.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand. I stood up, smoothed my skirt, and walked out the glass doors.

"I need the complete file," I told the records clerk at St. Jude's Maternity Ward twenty minutes later.

The woman adjusted her glasses, tapping her keyboard. "I have your admission and delivery notes right here."

She spun the monitor toward me. I scanned the digital pages.

"Where is the newborn wristband checklist?" I pointed at the gap in the index.

The clerk frowned, scrolling down. "That's strange. It should be attached."

"Find the footprint page," I demanded. "And the discharge handover record."

Her mouse clicked rapidly. A flush crept up her neck. "They aren't in the system."

"Check the physical archives. There has to be a paper backup."

"Everything was digitized five years ago, Mrs. Hayes. If it's not here, it's gone."

"Who was the transport nurse on duty that night?"

"A woman named Clara Jenkins. But she resigned a week after your discharge."

My phone buzzed in my purse. Rachel's name flashed on the screen. I swiped to answer.

"I dug into his accounts," Rachel said, skipping a greeting. "Exactly seven days after you gave birth, Victor wired fifty thousand dollars from a shell LLC to a private account."

"Belonging to Clara Jenkins," I said into the receiver.

"How did you know the name?"

"She was my nurse. She quit the same week he sent the money."

A man in a sharp grey suit marched up to the desk, cutting off my view of the monitor.

"Mrs. Hayes, I am the head of Risk Management," he announced, his tone flat. "We cannot disclose former employee details to patients."

I didn't argue. I didn't raise my voice.

I raised my phone, snapped three rapid photos of the incomplete digital index, and turned my back on him.

"Send these to Marcus," I told Rachel, walking straight toward the elevator. "Tell our lawyer to prep a subpoena."

"Done," Rachel replied. "Now check your messages. I just sent you three photos from ten years ago."

I pushed through the revolving doors into the afternoon heat. I opened the text thread.

The first photo showed Victor in the JFK international departure terminal. He wasn't in Chicago. He was pinning a blonde woman against a concrete pillar, his mouth crushed against hers.

I swiped to the next image. She was adjusting his tie. His hands rested on her waist. The posture screamed familiarity. It wasn't a one-night stand.

"Who is she?" I asked, gripping the phone tight enough to crack the case.

"Serena Vale," Rachel answered. "His executive secretary."

"He hired her right before we got married."

"They've been busy. Serena has a ten-year-old son named Leo. He was born exactly six days after Oliver."

A delivery truck rumbled past the curb, drowning out the street noise.

"Who is listed on the birth certificate?" I asked, my voice dropping.

"The father's line is completely blank."

"Did he think I would never find out?" I asked the empty sidewalk.

"Men like Victor don't think they'll get caught," Rachel replied. "They think they own the board."

"Give me the boy's location. Right now."

I parked my SUV across the street from a brick public school in Queens. The final bell rang. A swarm of children flooded the front steps.

I stayed behind the steering wheel, scanning the crowd.

Parents hugged their kids. Minivans pulled away. The sidewalk slowly emptied.

Then, a boy walked out alone.

He was too skinny for his age. His uniform shirt hung loosely over his narrow shoulders, the cuffs washed until the fabric frayed. He dragged his feet, the rubber soles of his old sneakers peeling away from the canvas.

No one waved to him. No car waited for him.

He stepped into the sunlight and squinted. He raised his left hand to shield his eyes.

The sleeve slipped down his forearm.

Right there, on the inner pale skin of his wrist, sat a light brown birthmark shaped like a crescent moon.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I grabbed the door handle. I wanted to run across the asphalt. I wanted to grab his narrow shoulders and ask him his name.

I forced my hand off the plastic latch.

A birthmark wasn't proof. I needed science.

I picked up my phone and hit redial.

"Rachel," I said, my eyes never leaving the boy.

"Did you find him?" she asked.

"Yes. Is he always alone?"

"According to the school, yes. He walks to the bus stop every day."

"Serena makes six figures, Rachel. Why is her kid taking the public bus in worn-out shoes?"

"I don't know, Eleanor. But we need proof before we make a move."

"I know. Send someone into that school cafeteria. Bribe a janitor. Dig through the trash. Find a disposable cup Leo drank from today."

"You want a DNA sample," she confirmed.

"I want it done legally, and I want it expedited."

The boy adjusted his backpack straps and began the long walk down the block.

A notification pinged on my screen. I minimized the call.

Victor: *Don't wait up. Business dinner.*

I stared at the peeling rubber on Leo's left shoe. I thought about the fifty thousand dollars Victor paid a nurse to steal a baby. I thought about the fifteen percent company shares I almost gave him for our anniversary.

My thumb hovered over the keyboard.

I typed a single word.

*Sure.*

I dropped the phone onto the passenger seat and shifted the car into drive. Tomorrow was our tenth anniversary. And Victor was going to get exactly what he deserved.
