Chapter 5

The restaurant was small. Private. The kind of place where they didn't put your name in the reservation book. Dallas had rented the entire space. Just us.

I arrived exactly on time. He was already seated. Dark suit. No tie. He stood when I walked in.

"Raina."

"Dallas."

He pulled out my chair. I sat. A waiter appeared with water and wine and disappeared before I could thank him.

Dallas didn't touch his glass. He looked at me for a long moment. Then he said: "I want to propose something."

I waited.

"A marriage arrangement," he said. "Legal. Binding. Public."

I set down my water glass. "Why?"

"Because you need protection from what Lucien Chapman is doing to you. And because I—" He stopped. Started again. "Because I've wanted to protect you since we were seventeen and I'm done pretending I don't."

My thumbnail found my finger under the table. "This isn't romance."

"No," he agreed. "It's partnership. It's strategy. It's me offering you something you can actually use."

"What do you get out of it?"

His mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "I get to wake up knowing you're safe. That's enough."

I studied his face. No performance. No angle I could see. Just Dallas Murray saying impossible things like they were obvious.

"I had my attorney draft this." He slid a document across the table. Thick. Official. "Read it. Take your time."

I opened it. Standard prenuptial language. Asset disclosure. Terms of dissolution. Then I reached the clause on page seven and stopped.

*In the event of marriage dissolution initiated by either party, full ownership of all assets currently held by Dallas James Murray shall transfer immediately and irrevocably to Raina Bell Murray.*

I read it three times.

"This gives me everything," I said quietly.

"Yes."

"If we divorce, you lose your entire fortune."

"Yes."

I looked up. "Why would you do this?"

Dallas leaned forward. His voice didn't change. Steady. Certain. "Because you should never have to negotiate for what you're owed. Because I watched what Lucien did to you at The Plaza and I will never let anyone make you beg again. Because if you're going to trust me with your name, I'm going to trust you with everything I have."

My throat closed.

"Take the weekend," he said. "Think about it. If you say no, nothing changes between us."

But I didn't need the weekend. I'd spent three months in Connecticut waiting to die. I'd spent weeks after that watching Lucien replace me like I'd never existed. I'd spent my whole life being the Bell family's useful daughter.

I was done waiting for permission to choose myself.

I picked up the pen on the table. "Do you have a notary?"

Dallas went very still. "In the next room."

"Get them."

He stood. Walked to the door. Spoke quietly to someone I couldn't see. A woman in a gray suit entered with a stamp and a ledger.

I signed on page twelve. Raina Bell. My hand didn't shake.

Dallas signed beside me. The notary stamped. Witnessed. Left.

We sat across from each other. Married on paper. Strangers in every other way that mattered.

"Thank you," I said.

Dallas shook his head. "Don't thank me for this."

"Then what do I do?"

"You show up," he said simply. "That's all I've ever wanted."

One week later, I stood in front of the mirror in a hotel room that didn't feel like mine anymore. The gown was midnight blue. It fit. Dallas had sent his stylist. She'd known my size without asking.

My phone buzzed. Dallas: *Downstairs when you're ready.*

I took the elevator down. He waited in the lobby. Same dark suit. Same steady expression. But when he saw me, something shifted in his face.

"You look—" He stopped. Tried again. "You look like yourself."

I didn't know what to say to that. So I took his arm.

The car ride was silent. Not uncomfortable. Just quiet. His hand rested near mine on the seat. Not touching. Close enough that I felt the warmth.

The Four Seasons lobby blazed with light. Cameras. Reporters. Dallas had released the engagement announcement thirty minutes ago. Timed perfectly.

We walked in together.

The whispers started immediately. Louder than The Plaza. Sharper. I heard my name. Dallas's name. Lucien's name.

I kept my chin level. My hand steady on Dallas's arm.

The ballroom doors opened.

I saw Mrs. Bell first. She stood near the entrance in a gown I recognized from her favorite designer. Her face was bright. Performative. She waved.

I didn't wave back.

Then I saw him.

Lucien stood near the bar. Same spot he'd occupied at The Plaza. But Yasmin wasn't beside him. He was alone. Dark suit. Perfect posture. His glass halfway to his mouth.

He saw me.

The glass stopped moving.

I watched his face change. Not anger. Not grief. Something else. Something that looked almost like confusion. Like he was seeing me for the first time and the woman in front of him didn't match the story he'd been telling himself for months.

I didn't look away. Didn't smile. Didn't perform anything.

I just stood there. Radiant in a gown that fit. My hand on the arm of a man who had offered me everything and asked for nothing but my presence.

Dallas leaned close. His voice low enough that only I could hear. "You alright?"

"Yes," I said.

And I meant it.

We walked into the ballroom. Together. The crowd parted. Dallas's hand covered mine briefly. Warm. Steady.

Behind us, I felt Lucien's eyes. Still watching. Still trying to understand.

But I didn't turn around.

I kept walking forward. Into the light. Into the noise. Into the first night of a life I'd chosen for myself.

And for the first time in three months, I didn't press my thumbnail into my finger.

I didn't need to anymore.
