Chapter 5

Sawyer found me at seven-fifteen in the morning, standing at the vineyard's east terrace with my clipboard and a coffee going cold in my hand. The hills were still pink with early light. She came out of the side door in a silk robe, hair pinned back, not a single crease of sleep on her face.

She looked like a woman who had never been surprised by anything in her life.

"Walk with me," she said. It wasn't a request.

We walked the stone path along the terrace edge. She had her own coffee. She didn't look at the view. She looked at me.

"Brooklyn," she said. "Foster care. Twenty years." She let that sit for a moment. "I had my people pull everything when he said your name four times on that call." She examined her nails. One small, precise adjustment. "It's almost romantic, in a tragic sort of way."

I kept my pen against the clipboard. "Is there a logistics concern I can help with this morning, Ms. Robinson?"

The corner of her mouth moved. Not quite a smile. "I like you," she said. "That's not a compliment, just an observation." She turned to look at the valley below us, finally, as if deciding it had earned thirty seconds of her attention. "He was always going to be a disappointment. I didn't marry him for sentiment. I want you to understand that."

"Understood."

"My family's legal team has prepared contingency documents." She said it the way someone mentions the weather. "In the event of any disruption to today's proceedings." She turned back to me. Her eyes were very clear. "I want the day to go perfectly, Ms. Sanders. Make sure it does."

"That's what you hired me for," I said.

She studied my face for one long moment. Then she nodded once, like something had been confirmed, and walked back toward the side door.

I looked at my clipboard. Moved the florist arrival back ten minutes to account for the morning dew on the ceremony arch.

Then I kept working.

---

The evening came in slow and gold, the last of the light dragging long shadows across the vineyard rows. The rehearsal dinner had wrapped. The catering crew was clearing. Levi was inside with the florist, confirming the morning delivery window.

I was at the far edge of the property, where the manicured grounds gave way to the actual hill, checking the sightline from the ceremony site to the reception tent. I had my clipboard. I had my pen. The valley below was going purple in the dusk.

I heard his footsteps on the gravel behind me. Slow. No urgency in them this time.

He stopped beside me. Not close enough to touch. Just—beside me. The way he used to stand on the fire escape when we were kids and the apartment got too loud, shoulder to shoulder, not needing to say anything.

I kept my eyes on the valley.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The wind moved through the vines. Somewhere down the hill, a door closed.

"I kept the apartment." His voice was quiet. Careful. Like he was handling something he knew could break. "I kept everything exactly the same." A pause. "The stars are still on the ceiling."

The glow-in-the-dark stars. Twelve-year-old me, standing on his shoulders to press them against the plaster one by one because I'd read somewhere that stars were supposed to make a room feel less like a cage.

I stood there. The valley went another shade darker.

"The rehearsal dinner ran four minutes over schedule," I said. "I'll adjust tomorrow's timeline accordingly."

I turned and walked back toward the venue lights.

Behind me, nothing moved. No footsteps. He stayed at the edge of the hill. I didn't look back.

---

Later, Marcus told me what he found when he knocked on the hotel room door at eleven to confirm the morning car.

He didn't tell me that night. He told me later. But I could piece it together from what he said.

Dominic had photographs spread across the bed. Not framed ones, not the polished engagement portraits. Old ones. Printed on regular paper, some of them blurry, the kind you take with a disposable camera when you're seventeen and broke and the light in the apartment is terrible. Him and me on the fire escape. Him and me in the kitchen, laughing at something off-camera. The two of us under the glow-in-the-dark stars, lying on the floor, faces turned up toward the ceiling like we were watching a real sky.

He asked Marcus to have a car ready before dawn.

Marcus said yes. Then he went back to his own room and opened the guest coordinator contact list on his phone. He scrolled until he found my name. He saved my number to his personal contacts.

He didn't call me that night. He just saved it.

In case.
