Chapter 1

Evelyn's POV

I pressed the fountain pen to the dotted line and signed my name, officially erasing the ten-million-dollar debt my husband left behind five years ago.

Marcus, the senior board director, pulled the heavy folder across the mahogany table. "Ten million dollars," he muttered, shaking his head. "Five years of bleeding this company dry to fix a dead man's mistakes, and you just sealed the wound."

I slid the pen back into my leather case. "The creditors are paid off. The Adler estate is free and clear."

"When you mortgaged your grandmother's property to keep his name out of federal court, half this room called you insane," Marcus noted, leaning back in his chair. "The other half thought you were just a grieving widow too stubborn to let go."

"And now?" I asked, stacking my meeting notes.

"Now, you own us," Marcus admitted. "You hold absolute control. Grant left this place a sinking ship, but you turned it into a fortress. Nobody questions your authority anymore, Evelyn."

"It's not just about authority," David, the CFO, interjected from the end of the table. "The press still circles the anniversary of the yacht crash. They still want the missing funds story."

"Let them circle," I told David. "The debt is settled. The files are sealed. As of this morning, Adler Enterprises belongs solely to me. Grant's ghost can no longer touch this firm."

The heavy oak doors swung open, slamming violently against the wall.

My assistant, Chloe, rushed into the boardroom, ignoring the startled glares from the executives. She practically threw an iPad onto the table in front of me.

"Turn the volume up," Chloe demanded, her voice shaking.

On the screen, a news anchor stood in front of a Coast Guard vessel. The graphic at the bottom flashed in bright red letters: Missing Billionaire Found Alive.

"Search and rescue teams have recovered Grant Adler from an uncharted atoll," the reporter shouted over the ocean wind.

My lungs tightened. Five years of mourning, five years of rebuilding a shattered company, and he was simply alive.

"Cancel my afternoon meetings," I told Chloe, pushing my chair back.

Two hours later, my sixteen-year-old son, Leo, stood beside me on the private tarmac, fighting the wind whipping across the runway. His knuckles were white as he gripped a vintage brass compass. Grant had given it to him a decade ago, promising it would always point him home.

"Ten years," Leo said, his thumb tracing the engraved initials on the back. "He said an Adler never loses his way."

"Put it in your pocket, Leo," I said, adjusting the collar of my coat against the chill. "You're going to drop it."

"I won't." He held it tighter, his eyes glued to the descending helicopter. "He didn't abandon us. Everyone at school said he faked his death to escape the fraud charges, but they were wrong."

"People talk, Leo. It doesn't matter now."

"It matters to me," he insisted, his voice cracking. "I defended him. I fought Tommy in the locker room last year because he called Dad a thief. Now Dad can clear his name. We can finally be a normal family, Mom. No more empty chairs at Thanksgiving."

I forced a nod, refusing to let him see the tension locking my jaw. I had spent half a decade shielding Leo from the truth of his father's debts. Now, the ghost was coming back.

"Stay behind the barricade until the blades stop," I instructed.

A swarm of local reporters pressed against the chain-link fence to our left, cameras raised. The helicopter skids hit the concrete with a heavy thud. The side door slid open.

Grant stepped out.

Leo lunged forward, slipping under the yellow tape. "Dad!"

Grant paused on the tarmac. He looked at Leo, then at me. But he did not open his arms. He did not rush forward to embrace the son who had wept for him, or the wife who had paid off his ruin.

Instead, Grant turned back to the cabin.

He reached inside and grabbed a hand.

A woman stepped down onto the concrete. She looked younger than me, swallowed by an oversized yellow windbreaker. Grant pulled her close, intertwining his fingers with hers, anchoring her against his side.

The press erupted. Flashes strobed against the gray sky, blinding and relentless.

"Mr. Adler! Who is the woman?" a reporter screamed over the dying engine noise.

I walked past Leo, my shoes hitting the pavement, stopping three feet from my husband.

"Grant," I said, my voice cutting through the chaos.

He met my gaze without a flinch. "Evelyn."

"You're holding another woman's hand while your son stands right there," I said, pointing at Leo, who had frozen mid-step.

"Evelyn, please," Grant sighed, as if my anger was merely an inconvenience. "Don't make a scene."

"A scene?" I demanded. "You've been missing for five years. Your son has visited an empty grave every Sunday. Let go of her."

Grant squeezed the stranger's fingers. "This is Celeste. She kept me alive out there."

"I don't care if she built the raft," I snapped. "Let go of her and look at your son."

"The rules on the island were different," Grant replied, his tone entirely too calm. He shielded Celeste from the cameras with his shoulder. "We had to survive, Evelyn. You need to understand that. Society's expectations didn't exist out there."

"Society's expectations?" I laughed, a harsh, scraping sound. "I spent five years fighting off federal investigators. I liquidated family property to cover the ten million you stole from your own clients. Do not lecture me about survival."

Celeste shrank behind Grant, her eyes wide and fearful. "Grant, the noise," she whimpered.

"It's okay, I've got you," he whispered to her, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

The intimacy of the gesture struck me harder than a physical blow. He touched her the way he used to touch me before everything fell apart.

"Get in the car. We are handling this in private."

Before I could reach him, Celeste lurched forward.

She ripped her hand away from Grant, doubled over, and vomited onto the tarmac.

The violent motion caused her oversized windbreaker to fall open.

The fabric parted, revealing a tight maternity shirt clinging to a massive, undeniable pregnant belly. She had to be at least seven months along.

Silence crashed over the runway, broken only by the frantic, rapid-fire clicking of camera shutters.

"Mr. Adler, is the child yours?" a journalist shouted, shoving a microphone through the fence.

"How long have you been off the island?" another reporter yelled.

The questions merged into a deafening roar.

Leo dropped the brass compass.

The metal hit the concrete, the glass face shattering into a dozen pieces.

"Dad?" Leo whispered, staring at the woman's stomach.

Grant ignored the broken compass. He ignored the tears welling in his son's eyes. Instead, he wrapped his arms around Celeste, supporting her weight as she wiped her mouth.

"The first thing I did when I got back was find you," Grant said, his voice carrying over the snapping cameras. "Doesn't that prove you're the one I love the most?"
