Chapter 3

The familiar weight of my father's business card felt foreign in my palm as I stood outside the gleaming tower of Sterling Biotech. Forty-seven floors of glass and steel reaching toward the Manhattan sky, each window reflecting the morning sun like diamonds. Seven years. Seven years since I'd walked through those revolving doors.

I'd almost forgotten how the security guards straightened when they saw me, how their eyes widened in recognition despite the years and the deliberate transformation I'd undergone. Gone was the designer wardrobe, the perfectly styled hair, the manicured nails. In their place stood a woman in a simple black dress and flats, hair pulled back in a practical ponytail.

"Miss Sterling," the head of security breathed, his voice carrying a mixture of surprise and respect. "We weren't expecting—"

"I know." My voice was steadier than I felt. "Is my father in?"

"Always for you, miss."

The elevator ride to the top floor felt both endless and too short. Each floor that passed brought back memories I'd tried to bury—board meetings where men twice my age had looked at me like a prize to be won, charity galas where every conversation was calculated, every smile strategic.

The executive floor hadn't changed. Same marble floors, same oil paintings of Sterling patriarchs dating back to the company's founding in 1952. Same corner office with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.

My father sat behind his mahogany desk, silver hair perfectly styled despite being nearly seventy. When he looked up and saw me, something shifted in his expression—relief, perhaps, mixed with the kind of paternal concern he'd never quite learned to hide.

"Ivy." He stood, arms opening slightly before dropping to his sides, unsure of his welcome. "You look..."

"Different?" I closed the door behind me, the soft click echoing in the spacious office.

"Tired," he said gently. "Older. But stronger, somehow."

I walked to the window, looking down at the city that had once felt like a cage. "You knew, didn't you? About Marcus."

His silence was answer enough.

"How long?" I turned to face him.

"From the beginning." He moved around the desk, stopping a few feet away. "Private investigators are thorough, Ivy. I knew about his real wife within six months of you moving in with him."

"And you said nothing."

"You were twenty-three and convinced you'd found true love." His voice carried the weight of years of restraint. "You'd already accused me of trying to control your life, of driving away anyone who got close to you. What would you have done if I'd told you then?"

I knew the answer. I would have defended Marcus, probably cut my father off entirely, convinced that this was just another attempt to manipulate my relationships.

"You let me waste seven years of my life."

"I let you make your own choices." He sat heavily in one of the leather chairs facing the window. "Even when those choices broke my heart to watch."

The admission hung between us. I'd never heard my father sound so vulnerable, so human.

"The company," I said, changing the subject because the emotion in his voice was too raw, too real. "How much control do we have over the medical supply chain?"

His businessman's mask slipped back into place, but I caught the slight smile. "Forty-three percent of New York's hospitals depend on our supply contracts. Another twenty percent use our subsidiary companies without realizing it."

"Including the hospital where Marcus just got his residency?"

"Mount Sinai? Yes. We provide everything from surgical instruments to the coffee in their break rooms."

I walked to his desk, running my fingers along the edge of the wood I'd once hidden under as a child, playing while he worked late into the evening.

"I want him gone," I said quietly.

"Ivy—"

"Not dead. Not physically harmed. Just... gone. His medical career, his reputation, his ability to practice anywhere that matters. I want it all erased."

My father studied me for a long moment. "That's not who you were before."

"The person I was before got used and discarded like yesterday's newspaper." I met his gaze steadily. "The person I am now learned that sometimes the only way to deal with a parasite is to cut it out completely."

He nodded slowly. "There are conditions."

"Name them."

"You come back. Permanently. No more hiding in Brooklyn, no more pretending to be someone you're not." His voice grew firm, the tone I remembered from childhood when negotiation wasn't an option. "You take your place as my heir, learn the business inside and out. When I retire, Sterling Biotech becomes yours."

The weight of the offer settled over me like a mantle. Billions of dollars, thousands of employees, the power to shape healthcare across the entire Eastern seaboard. Everything I'd run from seven years ago.

"And Marcus?"

"Will discover that his medical career has some unexpected obstacles." My father's smile was cold, calculating. "Supply chain disruptions can be so unpredictable. Equipment malfunctions, delayed deliveries, suddenly unavailable medications. It's amazing how these things can impact a young doctor's performance reviews."

I thought of Marcus's face when he'd called me an investment, the casual cruelty in his voice when he'd dismissed seven years of my life as a "fair trade."

"When do we start?"

"Now." He pressed a button on his desk phone. "Sarah, please have the legal department prepare the succession documents. And call a board meeting for tomorrow morning."

As he spoke, I turned back to the window, looking out over the city that sprawled below like a chess board. Somewhere down there, Marcus was probably starting his first day as Dr. Chen, convinced he'd successfully traded up from a waitress to whatever future he thought he deserved.

He had no idea that his future had just become significantly more complicated.

My reflection stared back at me from the glass—no longer the naive girl who'd believed in fairy tales, but not yet the woman I was becoming. In between, suspended forty-seven floors above the street, I felt something I hadn't experienced in seven years.

Power.

"There's one more thing," my father said, hanging up the phone. "Our sources indicate that Dr. Chen has already begun cultivating new... connections. The hospital administrator's daughter, Stephanie Morrison. Apparently, she's taken quite an interest in the promising young resident."

I turned from the window, feeling my lips curve into something that wasn't quite a smile.

"How interesting. I suppose Marcus thinks he's found another sponsor."

"It would appear so."

I walked back to the desk, picking up the Mont Blanc pen that had been my father's favorite for as long as I could remember.

"Then I suppose we'll have to make sure his new relationship gets off to a proper start," I said, signing my name across the bottom of the succession documents with a flourish.

Ivy Sterling was back.

And Marcus Chen was about to learn the difference between using a waitress and crossing a Sterling.
