Chapter 6

The city felt different after Lucas's sudden disappearance. Shadows seemed longer, the night colder, as if the world itself was holding its breath. My chest tightened with every step I took beside David, and the fear that had been simmering since the first message refused to leave.

"Where are we going?" I asked, my voice shaking despite my attempt to sound brave.

David glanced at me, his expression both determined and gentle. "To a safe place. My friend-Jordan-can hide us until we figure out what Lucas wants. He's trustworthy. He'll keep us off the radar."

I nodded, though doubt gnawed at me. I had trusted people before-people I thought I could rely on-and look where that had led. But David... he was different. I wanted to believe him.

As we reached Jordan's apartment, tucked away in a quiet part of the city, David finally exhaled. "We're safe here, at least for tonight."

I sank onto the couch, my hands trembling as I pulled my knees to my chest. "Safe... but for how long? He's not going to stop, is he?"

David sat beside me, taking my hands in his. "No. He won't. But that doesn't mean we can't fight back. We'll be smart. We'll stay one step ahead. I promise, Emma... I won't let him hurt you."

I wanted to believe him, and part of me did. But the lingering threat of Lucas's words and actions made me restless, my mind racing with every possible scenario.

Just then, my phone buzzed again. I froze. "Not again..."

David leaned over and snatched the phone gently from my hands. The screen showed another anonymous message:

"One choice. Leave him now... or everything will be lost."

I felt my stomach twist. Leave him? How could I leave David now, when he had fought so hard to protect me? But the message was clear. Someone-or something-was forcing my hand, trying to push me away from the only person I felt safe with.

David's eyes darkened as he read it. "Emma... ignore it. Whoever is sending these... they're trying to manipulate you. Don't let them."

I wanted to nod, to trust his words completely. But fear and uncertainty clawed at me. Lucas had been everywhere tonight-following us, watching us, taunting us. Could I really ignore the danger?

"I... I don't know if I can," I admitted, my voice barely a whisper.

David pulled me into a tight hug. "You can. You will. Because I'm here. And we're facing this together. Not apart. No matter what choice they try to force on you."

I rested my head on his chest, letting the steady beat of his heart ground me. Yet deep down, I knew this was only the beginning. Lucas wasn't just a shadow from the past-he was a storm that threatened everything I had fought to hold onto, including my heart.

The hours passed in tense silence. David stayed close, never letting me out of his sight. Every sound outside-the distant sirens, the occasional shout-made me flinch, made my chest tighten with anxiety.

Finally, David spoke, breaking the oppressive quiet. "Emma... we need to plan our next move. We can't just hide forever. Lucas will escalate, and we need to be ready."

I nodded, my mind still clouded with fear and doubt. "Okay... but how? How do we stop someone who knows you so well... someone who can manipulate everything?"

David's gaze softened as he brushed a strand of hair from my face. "We start by trusting each other. I can't control him, but I can control how we react. And I'll make sure you're never alone in this."

I swallowed, letting his words sink in. For the first time since Lucas appeared, a small spark of hope flickered inside me. Maybe we could survive this. Maybe we could outsmart the past and claim our future.

But just as I began to feel some fragile sense of relief, my phone buzzed again.

I froze. David noticed immediately. "Another message?"

I nodded, my hands shaking. "Yes... it's from them."

David snatched the phone, his eyes scanning the screen quickly. His face paled, and a chill ran down my spine.

"Emma... it's worse than we thought," he whispered, his voice tight with tension. "They know where we are. And they're coming for us."

Panic surged through me. "Coming for us? How... how fast?"

David's jaw clenched. "Too fast. We don't have much time."

I felt my breath catch. My heart pounded in my chest, a mix of fear, adrenaline, and a stubborn, unrelenting need to stay with David-no matter what.

He pulled me close, his forehead resting against mine. "Emma... whatever happens, you stay with me. We'll face this together. No running. No hiding. Just us."

I nodded, gripping him tightly, as the distant sound of footsteps echoed outside the door.

Lucas had made his move. And this time... there was no turning back.
