I Illustrated My Husband’s Affair For His Mistress Novel Cover

I Illustrated My Husband’s Affair For His Mistress

To help my husband raise money for his mother's medical expenses, I started doing freelance illustration work online, using my hand-drawing skills. One day, I received a message from a new client. “Hi there, I’d like to commission a drawing of a couple.” The message included a photo of my husband, Elijah, with a young woman. Seeing the photo made my head spin. I wondered if the exhaustion from working non-stop all week had blurred my vision, making me mistake someone who resembled him. I zoomed in and out of the photo until I was absolutely certain. The man in the photo was unmistakably Elijah. Holding down the chaos inside me, I messaged the girl to dig a little deeper. “No problem.” “There’s a special offer right now, and I can add text as a border for free. Would you like that?” She replied quickly.

Chapter 4

I glanced at my phone and saw several messages from Elijah.

12:36 AM:

"Honey, why didn’t you text me to check what time I’d be home?"

"Are you still mad at me? Work has been hectic, I’m sorry."

1:10 AM:

"I might be working all night. Don’t wait up for me."

1:45 AM:

"Are you asleep? I miss you."

3:28 AM:

"I love you."

From anxious to carefree. I chuckled bitterly. It’s typical for someone who's messed up to cover their guilt with fake affection.

I didn’t reply with my usual "I love you too."

I got up, collected my things, and made my way to Lacey's house. Lacey had always treated me kindly, more like a daughter than a daughter-in-law.

On the way, I reached out to a friend to help me find a divorce lawyer. After a brief conversation, I shared what was going on between Elijah and me and asked for a divorce agreement to be drawn up promptly.

As I arrived at Lacey’s door, I was about to knock when I overheard muffled voices inside. Elijah’s father had passed away years ago, so Lacey usually lived alone. Driven by curiosity, I leaned in to listen.

"How long are you going to keep this up? I’m telling you, women can see through this..." Elijah's voice was laced with frustration, as if this conversation had happened many times before.

"I know, Mom, stop worrying. I really love Raelyn, it’s not just a show."

"Just keep pretending to be busy convincingly. Give me more time, and I’ll handle it."

"Raelyn should be here soon, so don’t let anything slip."

It felt like a crushing weight on my chest, squeezing the breath out of me. So, I was the only one kept in the dark. Lacey had known about his affair all along, and instead of stopping him, she helped him deceive me. This was the woman I considered a second mother.

I should have seen it coming. Like mother, like son.

Thinking back over the past few months, Elijah had spent less and less time with me. It was always overtime, fancy dinners, or taking care of Lacey. Their fabricated busyness was the perfect excuse. In reality, he must have been spending his time with that woman, just like last night.

I took several deep breaths to steady myself and knocked on the door. The conversation inside stopped abruptly, and Elijah opened the door with a sheepish grin.

"Babe, you're here."

"I left the office at five, didn’t want to disturb you at home."

"Since Mom usually wakes up early and you were coming over, I thought I’d give you a ride back."

I didn’t even look up. "I didn’t ask, so why are you so jumpy?"

I've always been methodical about cleaning our apartment, a habit Jackson found endearing if slightly obsessive. Every Saturday morning while he was at the gym, I'd transform our shared space from lived-in comfort to pristine order. The ritual calmed me, providing structure to counterbalance the unpredictability I'd known growing up in foster care. Today was no different—except it would change everything. The vacuum hummed against the hardwood floor as I worked my way around our gray sectional couch. Jackson had splurged on it when we moved in together three years ago, insisting we needed something comfortable enough for our movie marathons. I smiled at the memory as I lifted the cushions to vacuum underneath. That's when I saw it—a flash of bright pink lace wedged deep between the cushions. "What the hell?" I muttered, setting aside the vacuum and reaching for the fabric. It was underwear.

The Plaza Hotel glittered like a diamond against the winter sky, its windows casting golden light onto the snow-covered streets of Manhattan. I stood at the entrance, my breath forming small clouds in the frigid air as I clutched my simple black gown tighter around my shoulders. "Kehlani Ross," the doorman announced, his voice echoing through the marble foyer. I stepped inside, expecting warmth but finding none. The grand ballroom of the Winter Gala stretched before me, a sea of crystal chandeliers and designer gowns, of polished suits and practiced smiles. The heating was turned up high, yet I shivered uncontrollably. "Is it really that cold?" A woman beside me murmured to her companion, eyeing my trembling form with a mixture of pity and disdain. I didn't answer. How could I explain that my coldness came from within? That giving away my Vital Essence had left me hollow, unable to regulate my own temperature?

"Honestly, six months and she still won't sleep with me." Julian's voice, but with an edge I'd never heard before. Cruel. Dismissive. My hand froze on the door handle. Slowly, I pushed the door open just a crack, my heart hammering against my ribs. The scene that greeted me felt like a physical blow. Julian stood between the legs of Miranda Chen, our department's marketing coordinator, who was perched on his desk like she owned it. Her auburn hair cascaded over her shoulders as Julian's hands tangled in it, their mouths locked together with the kind of passion he'd never shown me. "The religious prude is beautiful, but boring," Julian continued as they broke apart, his voice dripping with contempt. "It's time to trade up." Miranda laughed, a sound like breaking glass. "Poor little Elara. Does she actually think you're serious about her?" "Please. She's useful for now, but I need a woman who knows what she wants." Julian's hands roamed Miranda's thighs with practiced familiarity. "Someone who isn't afraid to take what she deserves." The compass slipped from my nerveless fingers.

The oncologist's office was quiet, too quiet. I sat alone in the examination room, staring at the pristine white walls and the framed medical degrees that meant nothing to me now. Dr. Hale's voice had been gentle but clinical when she delivered the news. Stage-two uterine cancer. The words hung in the air like smoke I couldn't wave away. My hands remained steady as I clutched my purse. I'd chosen this clinic deliberately—across Brooklyn, far from Cassian's hospital, far from anyone who might connect the dots. I needed space to think, to breathe, to decide what came next. "Ms.
