Chapter 3

I wake to cedar and rain.

Not the faint trace that lingers in shared spaces. Not the ghost of scent on a coffee mug or a doorframe. This is different. This is everywhere—soaked into my skin, my hair, the sheets twisted around my legs. This is inside me.

Wyatt's arm is draped across my waist. His breath is warm and steady against my shoulder. We're tangled together in a way that makes it impossible to tell where I end and he begins.

I go very still.

The room is dim—early morning, pre-dawn, the kind of gray light that makes everything look unfinished. My clothes are scattered across the floor. His shirt is inside-out near the door. The evidence of last night is everywhere, and I can't unsee it.

Then I feel it.

Deep in my chest. Behind the walls I built ten years ago. Behind the silence that became so familiar I stopped hearing it as absence.

Something moves.

Not a voice. Not a word. Just a presence. A shift. Like something enormous turning over in sleep, one eye cracking open after a decade of darkness.

My wolf.

The air leaves my lungs in a rush. My entire body locks. My thumbnail drives into my palm so hard I feel skin break.

No. No. This can't be happening.

I extract myself from Wyatt's arms with the careful precision of someone defusing a bomb. He doesn't wake. His face is peaceful, younger in sleep, one hand reaching for the space I just vacated.

I sit on the edge of the bed. My hands are shaking. I press them flat against my thighs and focus on breathing—in, out, in, out—the way I learned to do in the weeks after Cassius spoke his rejection vow and my wolf went silent.

The presence stirs again. Not speaking. Not awake. Just there. Undeniable.

I stand. Walk to the bathroom. Close the door. Turn on the water so I have a reason for the sound I can't quite suppress—half sob, half gasp, all panic.

In the mirror, I look the same. Same face. Same sharp jaw. Same eyes that have spent ten years learning not to want anything they can't control.

But my scent is different. I can smell it even through my own fear. Warm. Satisfied. Something deeper than skin, something that comes from the place where bonds form and break and reform.

I turn off the water. Press my forehead against the cool tile. Force myself to think.

This was a mistake. Last night was a mistake. The contract was supposed to protect me from this—from feeling, from bonding, from the kind of vulnerability that gets weaponized by wolves like Cassius Vane.

I need to fix this. Now. Before it goes any further.

By the time Wyatt wakes, I'm dressed. My hair is pulled back in the plain, functional braid I do myself—not the Luna style he's been weaving for me every morning. The contract dissolution document sits on the kitchen table, printed and ready.

He comes out of the bedroom in his jeans and nothing else, his hair sleep-mussed, his eyes soft and unguarded. When he sees me sitting at the table, something in his expression shifts.

"Charli." My name sounds careful in his mouth.

I slide the document across the table. "Read this."

He doesn't move. "What is it?"

"Contract termination. Full dissolution. All promised resources transfer to Duskhollow immediately, no strings. You're released from your obligations. Effective today."

The silence that follows is so complete I can hear my own heartbeat.

Wyatt sits down slowly. Picks up the document. Reads it with the same careful attention he brings to everything. When he finishes, he sets it down and looks at me.

"Last night was a mistake," I say. My voice comes out level. Precise. "We crossed a line we agreed not to cross. I'm correcting it."

"A mistake." He repeats the word like he's testing its weight.

"Yes."

"You're releasing me from the contract."

"Yes."

"With full resource compensation."

"Yes."

He leans back in his chair. His eyes—those soft, gentle eyes that have been watching me for three months—are very steady. "Can I ask you something?"

I nod once.

"Do you want me to leave because you felt nothing—" His voice drops, becomes something quieter and more devastating. "Or because you did?"

The question lands like a physical blow. My thumbnail finds my palm again. Presses. Holds.

I don't answer.

Wyatt stands. Crosses to where I'm sitting. Crouches down so we're eye level. His scent—cedar and rain—wraps around me, and deep in my chest, that presence stirs again. Awake now. Paying attention.

"Charli." His hand covers mine, stopping the pressure of my thumb. "I felt it too."

I pull my hand away. Stand. Put the table between us. "Sign the document. Please."

He looks at me for a long moment. Then he picks up the pen. Signs his name in clear, deliberate strokes.

"If this is what you need," he says quietly, "then I'll do it. But I'm not leaving because I want to. I'm leaving because you asked."

He walks back into the bedroom. Comes out dressed. Picks up his jacket.

At the door, he pauses. Looks back.

"For what it's worth," he says, "I don't think last night was a mistake. I think it was the first real thing that's happened between us."

Then he's gone.

I sit at the table for a long time after, staring at his signature. My chest feels hollow. My wolf—awake now, undeniably present—paces behind my ribs like something caged.

I pull out my phone. Send a formal request to Silverfang's Alpha for a three-month diplomatic posting to Ashenveil alliance territory. I need distance. I need time. I need to get far enough away that I can't smell cedar and rain every time I close my eyes.

The approval comes back within an hour.

I'm on the road within the week.
