Chapter 3

The mahogany table spanned the entire length of the royal war room.

Glossy photographs lay scattered across the polished wood. Alexander, his collar undone, slipping through the wrought-iron gates of Camille’s private residence at two in the morning.

"Republican support is up three points," the government liaison announced, tapping his silver pen against a notepad.

"The financial markets opened low," Clara added from the corner. She swiped a finger across her tablet. "And Camille’s security detail intercepted four death threats before dawn."

King Edmund rubbed his temples. Queen Beatrice stared out the window. The lawyers furiously scribbled notes.

Not a single pair of eyes met mine.

"Am I allowed to ask whether my husband is having an affair, or is that considered a constitutional question?"

The scratching of pens stopped. The silence swallowed the room whole.

Alexander stared at his hands. "Eleanor."

"That is my name," I said, keeping my spine rigid against the leather chair. "I was beginning to wonder if anyone remembered."

The advisors cleared out quickly, leaving only the family behind closed doors.

King Edmund steepled his fingers. He looked older today, the gray in his beard suddenly stark against his pale skin.

"You’ve done more for this family than anyone realizes," Edmund said softly.

Heat bloomed in my chest. It was a pathetic, conditioned response to royal approval. I had spent fifteen years starving for a kind word from the monarch.

"Which is why," he continued, his tone shifting into business, "I’m asking you to do this one last thing. The children’s hospital tour this afternoon. With Alexander and Oliver."

A short, hollow laugh scraped its way out of my throat. "It’s always the last thing."

Queen Beatrice adjusted her silk shawl. Her gaze was sharp, completely devoid of pity. "No one is asking you to be happy. Only dignified."

"Why does dignity always mean I’m the one who has to swallow something?"

"Because you’re the one strong enough to do it."

I studied my mother-in-law. It sounded like a compliment. It felt like a blade. They didn't admire my resilience. They used it as a license to keep hurting me.

The hallway outside the meeting room felt freezing.

Oliver waited near the arched window, his school blazer wrinkled. His eyes were red-rimmed.

"You have to come today." He grabbed my wrist, his grip surprisingly tight. "If you don't, everyone will know the rumors are true."

I looked down at his trembling fingers. "Do you want me there because you love me, or because you need me to make this disappear?"

Oliver blinked, his jaw working. "Does it matter?"

My heart squeezed. A physical, agonizing pinch.

He was terrified. The institution had already taught him to prioritize survival over truth. I wrapped my arms around his shaking shoulders and pulled him close.

"I'll be there," I whispered into his hair.

I closed my eyes. I was teaching my son a very dangerous lesson: if he was afraid enough, his mother would always sacrifice herself.

Thousands of people packed the plaza below the hospital balcony.

Union Jacks fluttered in the winter wind. The roar of the crowd vibrated through the soles of my shoes.

I smiled and waved. Alexander stood beside me, his fingers wrapping around my hand to present a united front.

"Thank you," he murmured, his voice barely audible over the cheering.

I kept my teeth bared in a perfect, camera-ready smile. "For what?"

"For doing this."

I waved at a little girl in the front row. "For helping you love another woman more comfortably?"

His expression cracked. The charming royal facade fractured for a split second. "That isn’t fair."

"No." I dropped my hand from the railing. "It isn’t."

The next morning, the papers hit the breakfast table. A massive, full-page photo of us on the balcony dominated the front page.

*The Look of Love*, the headline screamed.

I stared at the glossy page. A giggle bubbled up from my throat. The giggle turned into a laugh, sharp and jagged, echoing off the high ceiling of the empty dining room. Then the tears came, hot and blinding.

The entire country was perfectly willing to process a woman's despair and sell it back to her as a fairytale.

***

The press mob outside Camille's apartment had grown too dangerous.

The crown's solution was to move her into the East Wing of the palace.

I found her in the conservatory, staring at the winter frost on the glass panes. She wore a simple cashmere sweater. No pearls today.

She turned when the heavy oak door clicked shut behind me.

"I never asked him to marry you," Camille said. Her voice lacked its usual polish.

I walked past a row of blooming orchids. "Neither did I."

She fell silent, her hands twisting nervously in her lap.

"I spent years wondering what you had that I didn’t," I told her.

Pity softened her features. She took a step forward, raising a hand to comfort me.

"Please don’t," I snapped, stepping back immediately. "I couldn’t bear it."

She lowered her arm.

"You didn’t make vows to me," I said, my voice steadying into something cold and final. "He did."

I walked out of the greenhouse. For the first time in a decade, I didn't look back to measure my shadow against hers.

***

Later that afternoon, Oliver stormed into my private study.

He threw his backpack onto the sofa. The canvas slapped against the leather cushions.

"I heard him," Oliver blurted out. "Last night. On the phone with Uncle Henry."

I set my pen down.

"He said he has loved Camille most of his life." Oliver's voice cracked. He scrubbed a hand over his face, desperately trying to look like a man. "Dad was unhappy too, Mom."

I stared at my son. "Do you think I was happy?"

"No, but—"

"There it is," I said softly.

The boyish defiance drained out of him. He sank onto the cushions, burying his face in his hands. "I don’t want to choose!"

The puzzle pieces snapped together in my mind.

"You think if I leave him, I leave you too," I realized.

A sob tore from his throat.

I crossed the room and pulled him against my chest. He clung to me, weeping like a frightened child. I stroked his back, feeling the sharp ridges of his spine beneath his shirt.

"I will always be your mother," I whispered. "But I cannot promise to always be his wife."

He stiffened in my arms.

I didn't take the words back. I couldn't protect him from the truth anymore.

A loud knock sounded at the door. Clara pushed it open without waiting for permission. Her tablet glowed brightly in her hand.

"Ma'am," she said, her tone unnervingly flat. "You need to turn on the news. Now."
