I Demanded Divorce While Saving His Mistress' Mother

I had been pleading with my husband, Kai, for half a year before he finally agreed to join me for a concert. As I waited at the airport, the boarding announcement echoed through the terminal, but there was still no sign of him. I called countless times, only to be met with silence. Then I saw Adrianna's post on Instagram. Caption: "Big thanks to someone for staying up two nights straight and still coming along to watch the esports tournament." Attached was a photo of her and Kai, arms around each other, flashing victory signs at the event. Without a second thought, I turned off my phone and proceeded to check in for my flight. This concert was the final performance of my favorite artist before retiring—a poignant metaphor for my dwindling marriage. After the plane landed back home, I switched my phone back on. Five days had passed without a single call from Kai. As I stepped out of the airport, a heavy rain poured down.

Chapter 1

I had been pleading with my husband, Kai, for half a year before he finally agreed to join me for a concert. Attached was a photo of her and Kai, arms around each other, flashing victory signs at the event.

I waited endlessly but couldn't catch a ride. Suddenly, Kai's call appeared on my screen. His voice was cold.

"Where are you? Come and pick up me and Adrianna from the airport."

I remained silent. In the past, I might have angrily confronted him about Adrianna, but now, I had no desire to engage.

Kai sounded annoyed. "Soleil Cook, have you lost your voice?"

"I'm at the airport entrance."

Kai predictably asked why I was there.

"Just got back from a concert," I replied.

He went silent for a moment, perhaps remembering his promise to join me. Before leaving, I had noticed Kai’s hospital schedule had been rearranged, which made my heart skip a beat. Yet, I hadn’t anticipated he would use his rescheduled break to attend an esports match with Adrianna.

"Where are you? We'll come find you."

I casually mentioned my location and hung up. Before Kai arrived, someone accepted my ride request for the extra fare I’d offered. The ride-share vehicle and they arrived simultaneously. Kai quickly grabbed Adrianna’s hand and got into the car.

“Adrianna's a bit tired, I'll take her home first and come back for you.”

As the car drove away, Adrianna rolled down the window, her tone smug. "Thanks for booking the ride, Soleil."

I watched them, feeling an empty silence within me. Kai frowned slightly.

"Don't bother with thanks for small things like this. Close the window before the rain gets in and you catch a chill."

Though his words carried a hint of reproach, his gesture of pulling her back into the car was gentle.

That car could have easily fit three, but in Kai and Adrianna’s world, there was no space for me. I stood there soaked, clutching my suitcase at the airport entrance, eventually left standing alone.

When the rain ceased, Kai didn’t reach out; instead, I saw his latest Instagram post. "Off to watch matches with my little buddy, making her wishes come true during our getaway in Switzerland."

Below were snapshots from their five-day trip. As I scrolled to the last image, my finger froze—Adrianna and Kai were in the matching loungewear I had bought for us.

I had tried countless times to persuade him to wear them, let alone share photos on Instagram. Seven years of marriage, and he had never acknowledged me on social media. Yet now, his feed overflowed with images of someone else.

Something I had longed for over seven years was effortlessly granted to another. The ice mountain I failed to melt in seven years was now thawed because of someone else.

I turned off my phone, letting out a relieved smile. Then, dragging my suitcase, I checked into a budget hotel near the airport. Returning home now would only lead to more unpleasantness.

The Carter family image was everything, even if the reality behind closed doors was cold as ice. The soft ping of a microphone being tapped echoed through the room. Sydney stepped away from me, her emerald dress shimmering as she took the stage. Something in her smile made my stomach clench. "Ladies and gentlemen," she began, her voice honey-sweet, "we're gathered to celebrate my dear stepsister, Evelyn Carter, heiress to Carter Dynamics." I searched the crowd for Ryan's face, finding comfort in his familiar features.
