Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, though I wouldn't know that until later. What I knew at 10:14 was that Colter's skin smelled wrong.

I was halfway across the banquet hall when it hit me. Jasmine and rain. Layered under his own cedarwood scent like a second skin, clinging to his collar, his wrists, the hollow of his throat where my mark should have been the only thing anyone could smell.

My wolf went silent. Not the comfortable quiet of a wolf at rest. The held-breath quiet of a wolf that knows the predator is already inside the den.

I kept walking. Seven years of Luna training meant my face stayed smooth even as my chest started to compress. I reached Colter's side near the dais where the evening's formal announcements were supposed to begin. He turned toward me, and the jasmine intensified.

"You're late," I said quietly. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that.

"Border check ran long." He didn't look at me when he said it. His gaze tracked past my shoulder toward the far side of the hall.

I followed his line of sight. Skylar Morrison stood near the refreshment table, wearing a dark green dress that hugged her frame. She was new. A transferred warrior from some minor pack I'd processed the paperwork for six weeks ago. I'd seen her maybe twice.

She looked up. Met Colter's eyes. Smiled.

The mate bond transmitted his response before I could brace for it. A flicker of warmth. Interest. Desire. It hit my chest like a fist, foreign and sharp and unmistakably not meant for me.

I stopped breathing.

"Zoe." Colter's hand landed on my elbow. "The delegates are waiting."

I pulled my arm back. Stepped away. The jasmine scent clung to my sleeve now where he'd touched me.

"I'll handle the announcements," I said. My voice was still steady. I was still proud. I turned toward the dais and delivered the evening's formal welcome, confirmed next month's border treaty renewals, thanked the allied packs for their attendance. Every word came out clear and precise because I had done this a hundred times and my body knew the script even when my mind was fracturing.

When I stepped down, Colter was gone.

I found him twenty minutes later.

I hadn't meant to follow the scent. I'd meant to go back to my workroom, to the stack of treaty files and alliance correspondence that always needed my attention. But my feet carried me past the formal gathering rooms, down the corridor toward the private Alpha quarters, and my hand pushed open the door before I could think better of it.

Skylar Morrison stood in the center of the room. My room. Our room. She wasn't startled. She turned toward me with the easy confidence of someone who had been here long enough to know where everything was kept.

On her right wrist—the wrong wrist—sat the Luna's ceremonial cuff. Silver and moonstone, the piece I had worn every formal event for seven years. The moonstone sat dull and cold against her skin.

"Luna Zoe." Her voice was soft. Respectful. The kind of respect that's performed rather than felt. "I was just—"

"Take it off." I didn't recognize my own voice. It came from somewhere deeper than my throat.

She blinked. Glanced down at the cuff as if she'd forgotten it was there. "Alpha Colter said—"

"I don't care what he said. That's mine."

She didn't move. Just stood there with her hand resting on the back of the chair—my chair—wearing my rank on the wrong wrist in the wrong room.

I turned and walked out. My spine stayed straight. My hands stayed steady. I made it all the way to the corridor before my wolf stirred, not with power but with a low, keening pain that had no sound.

I found Colter in his study an hour later. He looked up when I entered, and for a moment I saw the man I'd been bonded to at eighteen. Then his expression shifted. Closed.

"We need to talk," I said.

"Not now, Zoe."

"Yes. Now." I stepped forward. The jasmine scent was everywhere. In the air. On his clothes. Soaked into the room like it had been here for weeks. "Skylar was wearing the Luna's cuff. In our quarters."

He set down his pen. Leaned back in his chair. "She needed it for the formal photos."

"That's not how it works. You know that's not how it works."

"It's a piece of jewelry, Zoe."

"It's my rank."

His jaw tightened. "Your rank is what I say it is."

The words landed like a blade. Clean. Precise. Designed to cut.

I opened my mouth. Closed it. Tried again. "Colter—"

"Know your place." His voice dropped into the Alpha tone. The compulsion pressed down on my shoulders, my spine, my lungs. The command to submit, to be silent, to stop questioning what he had decided.

My wolf stirred. Not with power. With pain.

I didn't buckle. I held his gaze for three seconds. Then I turned and walked out.

Behind me, I heard him pick up his pen again.

That night I sat in my workroom with the small clay pot of dried wolfsbane in front of me. The bundle I replaced in Colter's dress collar every season. The charm that neutralized ambient wolfsbane in rival territories, the one he'd never noticed, never asked about, never thanked me for.

I set it back in the pot. Labeled it in my own handwriting. Left it on the shelf.

Then I pulled out the diplomatic briefing files for the Pack Alliance Summit. Ten days away. Five allied Alphas. A Lycan Council envoy.

I opened a blank page and started writing.
