Chapter 1

An accident, all to save Hawk Ethan and my mental age became frozen at 3. Everyone said the Hawk family would never accept a "fool," yet Hawk Ethan married me, showering me with more love than I could have imagined.

From amusement parks to fairy-tale castles, from dolls little girls adore to beautiful dresses,if I wanted it, he'd get it for me.

That was until the day the psychological evaluation report showed my mental age had recovered to eighteen.

Clutching the paper, I skipped eagerly to find Hawk Ethan.

When I reached his office door, it was slightly ajar, and the scene inside froze me in my tracks. The man who'd held me every night to lull me to sleep was embracing another woman, his hands firmly on her waist.

Intimate whispers drifted through the crack, and I clamped a hand over my mouth, tears stinging my eyes. I wasn't that naive anymore. Before the accident, Hawk Ethan and I had been lovers; I knew exactly what this meant.

"Ethan," the woman cooed, "Grandma said... he wants a grandchild."

"Bella Hawk's waiting for me," Hawk Ethan's voice lacked the warmth he always used with me.

"But she's just a kid, what does she know? Don't you want this? Today's my ovulation day..." The woman leaned in for a kiss.

"Is this Grandma's wish, or yours?" he cut her off.

"I told you, Poppy is all I need. Clean up and leave." There was no trace of reluctance in his tone.

I bit my finger and fled in a panic.

Soon after, Hawk Ethan found me.

He lifted me into his arms . "Did you pick up your test results? Can you read what it says, baby?"

Resting my head on his shoulder, my eyes red, I whispered, "Yeah... it's the same as before." I couldn't bring myself to tell him the truth.

"Why the long face?" He sensed my mood.

"No matter what happens to you, I'll always be right here."

His words made my nose tingle.

Hawk Ethan loved me so much, how could he cheat?

I remembered right after the accident, he was the only one I'd let myself rely on.

He'd never grown tired of staying by my side: taking me out to play during the day, tucking me in at night, even bringing me to his meetings.

When the Hawk family opposed our relationship, he'd knelt in the hall for days and nights in the pouring rain.

Blood mixed with rainwater on the ground, and I'd cried, begging them to stop.

But he'd repeated over and over, "Poppy, no one can tear us apart."

Over those thousand-odd days, his love had been so tangible.

Maybe what I'd seen was just an accident?

Maybe someone had forced him?

I made countless excuses for him in my head. But I never expected he'd shatter my illusions with his own words when we got back to the villa.

I was clutching the report, ready to confront him, when I overheard his conversation with his friend.

The fluorescent lights of the hospital waiting room cast harsh shadows across my face as I clutched Emma's favorite stuffed rabbit to my chest. Its worn fur was soft against my fingertips—the same fingers that had buttoned her little blue dress this morning, that had brushed her hair from her forehead when she'd complained of stomach pain at breakfast. "It's probably just something she ate," Maverick had said when I called him, his voice distracted by whatever patient had captured his attention that morning. "Give her some Pepto and keep an eye on her." But then the school had called. Emma had collapsed during recess. Now she was somewhere behind those double doors, undergoing emergency surgery at the hospital where her father worked, where he was supposed to be saving lives. I checked my watch for the hundredth time. Three hours. How could it take three hours for appendicitis surgery? The nurse had promised updates, but each time I approached the reception desk, they offered only vague reassurances.

The sterile scent of antiseptic filled my nostrils as Dr. Sharma smiled warmly at me from across her desk. My fingers nervously tapped against my knee—a habit I'd developed since childhood whenever anticipation built within me. "Everything looks perfect, Josephine. You're eight weeks along, and both you and the baby are healthy." Eight weeks. The words echoed in my mind, sending ripples of joy through my body. I pressed my hand against my still-flat stomach, marveling at the miracle growing inside me. Ian and I had been trying for nearly a year. "Would you like to hear the heartbeat?" Dr. Sharma asked, her eyes crinkling at the corners.
