Chapter 5

"I am submitting a formal conflict of interest recusal," I said, sliding the printed federal form across the polished oak desk.

Director Miller paused with his coffee mug halfway to his mouth. He glanced at the single sheet of paper, then up at me. The fluorescent lights overhead reflected off his wire-rimmed glasses. "It is eight-fifteen in the morning, Mara. What exactly am I looking at?"

"Alien registration number four-nine-two," I replied, keeping my posture rigid. "Sara Cole."

Miller set his mug down on a square cork coaster. "The baker? You interviewed her yesterday afternoon. Did she threaten a federal officer?"

"No," I said. "She is sleeping with my husband."

Miller stared at me. The silence stretched for three agonizing seconds. He blinked, his professional composure cracking instantly. "Excuse me?"

"My husband moved her into my house," I continued, my voice perfectly level. "He also added her name to the property deed without my consent."

"Mara, this is a federal immigration facility," Miller said, lowering his tone as he leaned forward in his leather chair. "We do not handle domestic disputes. If you need personal leave to sort out a divorce, just ask."

"I am not asking you to handle my marriage," I countered. "I am asking you to reassign her naturalization file to a neutral adjudicator immediately."

Miller flipped open the thick manila folder I had brought in. He scanned the top page, his eyes darting back and forth across the printed text. "You already flagged her profile for contradictory sworn statements. And you noted possible financial fraud regarding a state business subsidy."

"Yes."

"So deny the application," Miller said. He pushed the folder back across the desk toward me. "Stamp the rejection box. You have the hard evidence right here. Why bury this office in reassignment paperwork? We are already backlogged by six months."

I kept my hands at my sides. I didn't reach for the file. "Because Daniel will appeal the decision."

"Let him appeal. We win appeals every single day."

"If I deny her application, he will hire an expensive appellate lawyer," I explained. "He will stand in front of an immigration judge and claim I weaponized my federal badge out of marital jealousy. He will argue the denial was a personal vendetta, not a legal ruling based on facts."

Miller tapped his index finger against the polished wood. "He would have a highly compelling argument. The optics are terrible."

"Exactly," I said. "But the fraud is real. The forged subsidy documents are real. If I reject her, the evidence gets tainted by my direct involvement. A judge might throw out the decision entirely and grant her citizenship just to spite the agency's lack of oversight."

I stepped closer, planting my palms firmly on the edge of his desk. "Because I have a relationship with them, I must make this process so clean that no one can ever overturn the case."

Miller studied my face. He searched my expression for unchecked rage or tearful desperation. He found neither.

He reached for his silver pen. "You are handing me a loaded gun, Mara."

"I am handing you the bullets," I corrected him. "You pull the trigger."

Miller signed his name at the bottom of the recusal form with a swift, sharp motion. "File transferred. Go document your physical evidence and lock it in the secure system."

I walked out of the glass-walled office and returned to my cubicle.

The red warning banner still flashed across my computer monitor. WARNING: Conflicting Sworn Statements Detected.

I didn't clear the notification. I let it burn bright on the screen, a digital testament to Sara's lies.

I opened my bottom desk drawer and pulled out a heavy brown envelope.

I needed to secure my financial leverage before Daniel tried to erase his tracks. He thought selling my house would solve his mounting bakery debt. He didn't realize I was already dismantling the legal foundation beneath him.

I placed three distinct items in a row on my desk pad.

First, the original sponsorship letter from twelve years ago. The paper felt thin, the edges yellowed from age. My signature sat at the bottom in faded blue ink. The absolute proof that I brought her into this country, trusting my husband's plea for charity.

Second, Sara's two contradictory statements. I aligned the edges of the ten-year-old asylum petition and yesterday's interview transcript. On page one, she swore under penalty of perjury that her entire family perished in a violent uprising in her home country. On page two, she begged for an American passport to visit her severely ill mother.

Third, the character reference letter Caleb signed.

The date glared at me from the top right corner. The exact afternoon he texted me to stop making a scene in our family group chat. The day he told me Aunt Sara sacrificed everything.

I stared at my son's messy, slanted handwriting. My chest tightened, a sharp, suffocating ache pressing against my ribs. I forced my jaw to unclench. He chose his side. Now, I had to choose mine.

I slid all three documents into the brown envelope.

I grabbed a thick black marker from my pen cup. I wrote across the center of the paper in large, block letters: Attn: Rebecca Thorne, Esq.

She was the most ruthless property litigation lawyer in the district. She didn't settle, and she didn't lose.

I peeled the white strip off the adhesive flap.

A loud crash shattered the quiet hum of the federal office.

"Sir, you cannot bypass the security checkpoint!" a guard shouted.

I paused, my thumb hovering over the sticky seal of the envelope.

Someone shoved a metal stanchion across the floor. The heavy base scraped against the tiles with a deafening screech.

"I have a right to be here!" a familiar voice demanded.

My stomach dropped. The voice cracked slightly at the end, a sound I had heard every time he got frustrated over his math homework.

I stood up from my rolling chair. I stepped out of my narrow row and moved toward the frosted glass partition separating the staff area from the public floor.

The heavy double doors dividing the public waiting area from the secure processing floor swung violently on their hinges. Two armed security guards rushed forward, their hands resting cautiously on their utility belts. Dozens of applicants sitting in the plastic chairs gasped, pulling their children close.

Caleb stood dead center in the room.

He wore his flour-stained bakery apron over a dark t-shirt. His face was flushed red, his chest heaving with rapid, shallow breaths. He held his smartphone high above his head, panning the device across the room. The camera lens pointed directly at the row of federal officers behind the glass partitions. The red recording light blinked steadily on his screen, capturing the faces of everyone in the facility.

He locked eyes with me through the clear section of the glass.

"My mother is abusing her power!" Caleb shouted.

I spent ten years as the ward of Kason Oneal, the ruthless Underboss of the city's most dangerous crime family. He saved me when I was a child, raised me, and made me believe I was his queen. But the moment his ex-girlfriend, Dalia, returned, the illusion shattered. Kason demanded I return the jade pendant—the one he had hand-carved for my sixteenth birthday—just so he could hang it around Dalia's neck. To him, I was suddenly nothing more than a placeholder who had kept his bed warm. The cruelty didn't stop there. He stood by and watched as Dalia shredded my clothes with scissors, laughing at my tears. When I collapsed on the floor in agony from acute appendicitis, Kason didn't call an ambulance. Instead, he dragged me to a shady clinic, accusing me of faking a pregnancy to trap him. He ordered the doctor to "terminate it" while I was dying of sepsis on the table. He called me trash. He called me property. He stripped away every ounce of dignity I had left, all to please a woman who was lying to his face. I realized then that the hero who saved me when I was ten was dead. I was done begging for scraps of affection from a monster. Trembling, I walked to the phone and dialed the number of the one man Kason feared most—his sworn enemy, Hadley Payne. "Tell him yes," I whispered into the receiver. "I accept the arrangement. I will marry him." Kason thought he could break me. Instead, he was about to watch his "property" become the Queen of the rival family.
