Chapter 3

"You don't understand what happened after that showcase," Ethan said, his voice dropping low. "When you ran off that night, I was furious. I told everyone Vanessa was my girlfriend just to spite you. And she took that lie and ran with it."

I stared at him, my arms crossed tightly against my ribs. "And you let her."

"For two weeks, until it got completely out of hand," he answered, stepping toward me. "She showed up at my club meetings. She introduced herself to my professors. Then she brought a box of gifts and two dozen roses to a student entrepreneurship panel. In front of two hundred people, she announced it was our one-month anniversary. The room started chanting for us to kiss."

"And what did you do?"

"I tore into her," Ethan said, a muscle twitching along his jawline. "I was twenty-one, arrogant, and humiliated. I took the microphone and told the entire auditorium that we never dated, that she was delusional, and that I wanted nothing to do with her. The whole campus laughed at her for weeks. She couldn't walk into a lecture hall without people whispering. By the end of the term, she dropped out."

The bedroom grew suffocatingly quiet.

"I destroyed her life back then, Claire," Ethan continued, his voice cracking at the edges. "She ended up bouncing across Europe, broke, sick, and alone. When she died holding my hand, begging me not to let the state take her daughter, I couldn't turn my back. I couldn't do it a second time."

I looked at him, feeling no sympathy—only a cold, hollow ache.

"Guilt doesn’t make you her father," I said.

Ethan flinched. "She has nobody else."

"Then we pay for her care!" I snapped. "We hire lawyers. We set up a trust. I am willing to fund every single day of her life, Ethan. But I will not wake up tomorrow and suddenly become a mother to a six-year-old child just because you feel bad about a college grudge!"

"Why does it have to be so rigid?" Ethan threw his hands up, frustration spilling through his polished veneer. "Look around this apartment. We have four thousand square feet. We have the money, the resources, the space. Why can't we just raise one more child?"

The words struck me like an open-palm slap.

*Why can't we?*

"Because this isn't about real estate, Ethan!" My voice climbed an octave, shaking the quiet room. "This isn't about whether we can afford groceries! You flew to Europe, took in another woman's daughter, brought her into our home, and decided our entire future without asking me! You didn't offer a conversation. You handed me an order!"

"She just lost her mother, Claire!" Ethan shouted back, his face flushing red. "She is terrified of being thrown away! If I send her to a boarding school or hand her off to strangers, she will never recover from it!"

"And what exactly are you asking me to sacrifice so she feels safe?" I demanded, marching straight into his space. "My life? Our marriage? You expect me to just smile, step aside, and play mommy to Vanessa's child?"

"I am asking you to show some compassion!" he yelled. "She needs a stable family right now!"

"Because I’m pregnant, Ethan!"

The scream ripped from my throat, raw and deafening.

The air vanished from the room.

I stood there, chest heaving, tears burning hot behind my eyelids. My fingers dug through the fabric of my trousers, pressing hard against the sonogram hidden in my pocket.

I waited.

I waited for the shock to wash over his features. I waited for him to cross the floor, to pull me into his arms, to ask if I was alright, to ask when I found out.

Instead, Ethan's head jerked toward the doorway.

He didn't look at my face. He looked straight at the bedroom door, which stood cracked open by three inches.

Then he turned back to me, his brow furrowing as he raised a finger to his mouth.

"Claire, keep your voice down."

I froze.

The blood drained from my cheeks. Two seconds passed, each one dragging like jagged glass across my skin.

"What did you just say?" I whispered.

"Lower your voice," Ethan repeated, leaning in, his tone frantic and hushed. "Sophie might hear you."

A laugh tore out of my throat—sharp, ugly, and broken.

"Sophie might hear me?"

"Claire, stop—"

"Sophie might hear me?!" I snatched a heavy velvet throw pillow off the armchair and slammed it against his chest with everything I had. "I just told you we're having a baby! We spent months planning this! And your first thought is that her daughter might get upset?"

"Claire, she's traumatized—"

"Did you ask how many weeks along I am?" I yelled, tears finally spilling over. "Did you ask what the doctor said? Did you even look at me?!"

Ethan reached out to grab my wrists. "Of course I care, Claire, but right now—"

A tiny whimper drifted through the doorway.

Ethan froze mid-sentence.

Outside in the hall, floorboards creaked. I spun around and yanked the bedroom door wide.

Sophie stood on the runner rug in her oversized pajamas, her eyes wide and overflowing with tears. When she saw me, she gasped, stumbling backward until her heels caught the edge of the carpet.

She fell hard onto the polished wood, landing on her hands.

"Sophie—" I took an instinctive step forward, reaching down to help her up.

The moment my hand moved toward her, the girl shrieked. She scrambled back on her elbows, shaking violently, staring at me as if I were a monster coming to strike her.

Before I could speak, a body shoved past my shoulder.

Ethan blew right through me, knocking my arm aside as he dropped to his knees in the hallway. He gathered Sophie against his chest, wrapping both arms around her trembling frame.

"Are you hurt?" Ethan asked frantically, his hands checking her knees, her elbows, brushing her hair back from her wet face. "Did you hit your head? Soph, tell me, does anything hurt?"

"I want Mommy," the girl sobbed, burying her face into his shirt. "I don't like her, Dad. She's mad at me."

"No one is mad at you," Ethan whispered against her hair, his voice rich with tenderness. "You're okay. I've got you."

I stood in the doorway, my outstretched hand still hanging empty in the air.

Slowly, my fingers curled into a fist. I let my arm drop.

My other hand drifted to my lower stomach, resting flat over the tiny, silent life growing beneath my skin.

A wave of bitter nausea rolled through me. The man who had promised to love me, the man who was supposed to be my partner, was kneeling on the floor, offering the world to another woman's child while our own baby was treated like an inconvenient interruption.

The next morning was gray and freezing.

Ethan had insisted on driving me to my studio downtown. For ten blocks down Fifth Avenue, the only sound in the leather interior of his sedan was the hum of the heater and Ethan’s steady, low voice.

"She didn't sleep until four," Ethan said, keeping his eyes on the traffic. "She had nightmares about the hospital. The child psychologist I called this morning said the transition is going to be rough. She lacks basic emotional security, Claire. We have to be patient. If you just give her a little time, let her get used to you being around..."

I leaned my head against the passenger window, watching the rain streak across the glass.

"Claire? Are you listening to me?"

"Do you remember what I told you yesterday?" I asked quietly.

Ethan fell silent.

He didn't answer right away. For one whole, terrible second, his eyes flickered, his hands gripping the steering wheel as if searching through a mental calendar.

That one second was all I needed.

"Pull over," I said.

"What?"

"Pull the car over, Ethan."

"We're in the middle of traffic, Claire—"

"Pull the damn car over!"

He swore under his breath and jerked the wheel, cutting across a lane to slam the brakes against the curb outside a department store.

"What is wrong with you?" Ethan snapped, turning toward me. "I am trying to find a way for us to navigate this—"

I unbuckled my belt, popped the door, and stepped out into the freezing drizzle.

Ethan stared through the windshield, stunned, before rolling down the driver's side window. "Claire! Get back in the car!"

I walked around the hood, stopping directly beside his door. I leaned down, resting both hands on the wet frame of his window, staring straight into the cold, calculated eyes of the man who never made a losing trade.

"You want to be her father?" I said, my voice steady, clear, and venomously calm. "Fine. But you won’t do it while being my husband. Keep Sophie, and I’ll file for divorce."

Ethan's face drained of color as I straightened up and turned away.
