Chapter 3

SOPHIE'S POV

Diane Bennett called me three times before I finally picked up.

"Sweetheart, you're coming Saturday, aren't you?" Her voice was bright and a little breathless, the way it always got after her cardiology appointments. "Seventy-two only happens once. I had Luca's make the lemon ricotta cake you like."

I was sitting on the edge of the hotel bed with my suitcase still half unpacked. "Diane, I don't think that's a good idea."

"Ryan said you two had a rough patch." She paused. "Every marriage has those. Frank and I went a whole summer barely speaking in 1989. Please, honey. It wouldn't feel like my birthday without you."

She didn't know. Ryan had told her a rough patch.

I should have said no. But for ten years, Diane had been the one person in that family who called me on my birthday before her son did.

"I'll be there," I said.

---

Luca's was a small Italian place in the North End with brick walls and candles stuck in old wine bottles. The Bennetts had celebrated every birthday there since before I came along. The back table, the round one by the window, had been ours for a decade. Diane at the head. Frank on her left. Ryan on her right, and me beside Ryan, closest to the window, where I could watch the snow fall on Hanover Street in winter.

When the host led me to the back, Chloe was sitting in that chair.

She wore a soft gray sweater and small pearl earrings, her hair pulled into a low knot. Modest. Daughter-in-law material. Her hand rested on her stomach.

Diane saw me first. Her smile faltered, and two spots of pink appeared high on her cheeks.

"Sophie, honey." She half rose from her seat. "I didn't know Ryan was bringing..." She glanced at her son and didn't finish.

Frank cleared his throat and studied the bread basket.

Chloe was already pushing back her chair. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize. Let me move."

"Sit down," Ryan said.

He didn't even look at her when he said it. He was looking at me.

"It's just a chair, Soph. Sit anywhere."

There were two empty seats left. One beside Frank, and one at the corner where the waiters would bump into my back all night.

I took the one beside Frank. He patted my hand under the table, once, and didn't say anything. That was Frank. Forty-six years married and still choosing silence over trouble.

Chloe lowered herself back into my chair. "Thank you," she murmured to Ryan.

The first hour was almost bearable. Diane talked about her water aerobics instructor. Frank complained about the Patriots. I asked Diane about her new medication, and she lit up and squeezed my wrist across the table, like she was trying to anchor me there.

Then the entrées came, and Diane set down her fork.

"So what's next for the foundation?" she asked. "Sophie, you told me in October you were planning a spring luncheon. The one for the oncology wing."

Before I could answer, Ryan said, "We're still working out the calendar for next quarter. But going forward, Chloe's going to start taking over some of the public-facing events."

He said it the way he'd say the weather was turning cold. Like it was already settled.

Diane blinked. "Chloe?"

"She's great with people." Ryan reached for his wine. "And Sophie's had a lot on her plate."

Chloe laughed softly and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Honestly, I have so much to learn. I'm not anywhere near Sophie's level." She turned to me, her eyes wide and warm. "Maybe you could send me your donor notes? Just so I don't embarrass anyone. I know you've known the Doyles and the Okafors forever."

The table went quiet.

I didn't answer her. I looked at Ryan.

He nodded.

Not reluctantly. Not with any shame. He nodded like it was the most reasonable request in the world.

"It makes sense," he said. "You spent years building those relationships. The foundation shouldn't suffer because of what's going on between us. Our marriage is one thing. The work is another."

"The work," I repeated.

"Soph."

I set my napkin on the table and folded it once.

"So let me make sure I understand," I said. My voice came out even, which surprised me. "She sleeps with my husband. She lives in my house. She sits in my chair at your mother's birthday." I turned to Chloe, who had gone very still. "And now I'm supposed to hand her my work, too? Personally? With notes?"

Diane's hand went to her chest. "Sleeps with..."

Ryan leaned toward me, his voice dropping low and hard. "Don't do this in front of my mother."

I laughed. I couldn't help it.

"You announced her pregnancy to three hundred people, Ryan. On our anniversary. With a microphone." I stood up. "Now you're worried about looking decent?"

Nobody spoke. Frank stared at his plate. Chloe's fingers tightened over her stomach, and her lower lip trembled on cue.

I walked around the table to Diane and kissed her cheek. Her skin was cool and smelled like the same powder she'd worn for ten years.

"Happy birthday," I said quietly. "I'm sorry."

Then I got my coat.

---

The cold hit me the second I stepped outside. Hanover Street was crowded with couples and tourists, the cafés glowing yellow. I'd made it half a block when the restaurant door banged open behind me.

"Sophie!"

I kept walking. He caught up and stepped in front of me, blocking the sidewalk.

For one second, under the streetlight, he looked shaken. I almost let myself wonder.

"You need to go back in there," he said. "Right now. And apologize to my mother."

I stared at him.

"She's seventy-two. She has a heart condition, which you know better than anyone." He dragged a hand through his hair. "She's in there crying. You turned her birthday into a scene."

"I did."

"You could've talked to me privately. You didn't have to drag her into it."

A month ago, I would have explained. I would have walked him through every step, the gala, the perfume in our hallway, the tampons under my sink, the chair. I would have laid it all out carefully, like a case, hoping he'd finally see it.

I didn't say a word.

I stepped around him and raised my hand for a cab.

"Sophie. Are you seriously just leaving?"

The cab pulled up. I got in and closed the door on whatever he said next.

---

Back at the hotel, I didn't take off my coat. I sat at the little desk by the window and scrolled to a number I'd saved two days ago and hadn't called.

Naomi Feld picked up on the second ring, even though it was nearly ten on a Saturday.

"Sophie. I wondered if I'd hear from you."

"I'm ready," I said.

"Ready to talk through your options, or..."

"Ready to file. I don't need a consultation. I need you to start."

A pause. Then the sound of a keyboard. "Okay. I'll have the initial letter to his counsel by tomorrow morning. Do you want me to copy him directly?"

I thought about Ryan nodding across the table. *It makes sense.*

"Yes," I said. "Copy him."

---

The email went out at 8:02 a.m.

At 8:09, my phone started buzzing against the nightstand.

I let it ring until the fourth time before I answered.

"Sophie." His voice was raw, like he'd been up early or hadn't slept at all. "What the hell is this? A divorce attorney? Isn't this a little extreme?"

I sat up in bed and looked out at the gray harbor.

"You announced your mistress's pregnancy at our anniversary," I said.

He didn't say anything.

"Which part did you think I was staying for?"
