Chapter 3

My phone vibrated against the kitchen counter at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, shattering the quiet of my new apartment.

"I can't find his navy polo," Matt said the second I answered.

"Check the middle drawer of his dresser," I replied, placing my coffee mug into the sink.

"I looked. It's not there." The sound of hangers scraping aggressively across a closet rod echoed through the speaker. "And there's a yellow school permission slip on the kitchen island. Do I sign this or do you?"

"Read the bottom line, Matt. It requires the signature of the parent who has residential duty today."

"Elena, just come over and do it," he demanded, his voice rising in frustration. "Also, the Martinez clients are threatening to pull out because they don't understand the new warranty clause. I need you to call them right now and explain it in Spanish."

"Call the school administration if you lost the form. Hire a freelance interpreter for the Martinez account. I am off the clock."

"You're his mother. You're my wife."

"I am off the clock for both of those unpaid positions," I said, and ended the call.

The silence of my apartment rushed back in, heavy and absolute. For years, every forgotten shirt, every unsigned paper, and every confused client had automatically flowed into my hands. Matt hadn't just lost a wife. He had lost the invisible human infrastructure that kept his life running.

That weekend, the deeper reality of our separation surfaced during my custody block.

Ollie and I stopped at the park district community center. I stood near the sinks while he reached for the cheap pink soap. The automatic hand dryer on the wall suddenly triggered, emitting a deafening roar that bounced off the harsh tile walls.

Ollie flinched hard. He clamped his wet hands over his ears and froze, his shoulders completely rigid.

"Vanessa says big kids aren't scared of noises," he whispered, his voice vibrating with forced bravery.

I knelt directly on the damp floor, ignoring the water seeping into my jeans. I didn't tell him to brush it off. I didn't mock his fear.

"Find three blue things," I instructed, keeping my tone perfectly even.

He opened one eye. "The soap dispenser." He swallowed hard. "Your sneakers. The trash can."

"Good. Squeeze my hands."

He grabbed my fingers. The rigid posture melted out of his spine, leaving him breathing normally again.

"If I get scared at Daddy's house," Ollie asked, his gaze dropping to my shoes, "will you come get me?"

"If you have a medical emergency, I will drive through a wall to reach you," I answered. "But if you are having a hard time with a loud noise or a lost toy, Daddy is the parent on duty. He will help you."

He stared at me, his small brow furrowed. "You won't come?"

"I love you," I told him. "But I am not on call."

He processed the words slowly. The panic did not return to his eyes. He simply nodded, understanding for the first time that my boundary did not equal abandonment.

On Wednesday afternoon, I walked into the local community center's administrative office. Priya, the director, sat behind a metal desk cluttered with files.

She slid a massive stack of housing and medical documents across the surface.

"We need these translated into actionable bilingual checklists for the neighborhood pilot program," Priya said, tapping the top page. "The city wants this done by the end of the month."

I handed her a signed W-9 form and a single sheet of heavy cardstock. "Puente Language Services charges forty dollars an hour for technical translation."

Priya reviewed the paper, her eyebrows lifting. "You set up an LLC."

"I did."

A tall man walked into the room, carrying a rolled set of blueprints under his arm. He wore a faded gray henley and work boots covered in white dust.

"Elena," Priya said, gesturing to him. "This is Sean. He's the project architect for the new resource center."

Sean unrolled the thick paper across the desk, weighing down the corners with a stapler and a coffee mug. He studied my face for a second.

"You were at the courthouse last week," Sean noted, his voice low and observant. "You stood in the center aisle alone after the oath."

"I was there," I replied, offering no further explanation.

"We need your bilingual housing lists integrated into the lobby displays," he said, tapping a section of the floor plan. "Can you format the text for digital rendering?"

"I can."

A little girl wandered in from the hallway. Nora, one of the after-school program kids. She held out a small, slightly crushed yellow dandelion. I took it, tucking the stem behind my ear. I was finally putting my skills into a space that would pay me and credit my name.

Friday evening brought the Puente public launch event. I stood behind a folding table in the gymnasium, organizing informational flyers into neat stacks.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. Matt.

"Vanessa needs help setting up her gallery show tonight," Matt said, the background noise on his end loud and chaotic. "I need you to take Ollie for the evening."

"It is Friday. That is your custody block," I said, adjusting the edge of a banner.

"I am in a bind, Elena. You never put work before Ollie."

"I am not putting him behind my work," I countered, my voice sharp and final. "I am just no longer putting you ahead of everything else."

"So what am I supposed to do? Tell Vanessa I can't help her?"

"Take him to the gallery," I suggested, and ended the call.

I did not check my phone again. I spent the next three hours answering questions from local business owners, distributing my new business cards, and translating municipal housing codes for families who had been ignored by the city for a decade.

The event wrapped up at eight o'clock. I packed my laptop into my leather tote bag.

Priya walked over, holding a clipboard against her chest. "Could you stay an extra hour to review the final hospital brochures? Just as a favor to the center?"

"My contracted hours ended at eight," I said, sliding the zipper shut on my bag. "I can review them Monday morning at my standard hourly rate."

Priya paused. She studied my posture, then gave a short, respectful nod. She reached into her leather briefcase.

"Fair enough," Priya said, dropping a thick manila folder onto the table between us. "Then you should probably bill me for this one, too."

I opened the cover and stared at the bold logo printed across the top page: Carter Renovation—Matt's exclusive commercial bid for the center.
