Chapter 1

My daughter and my husband's old flame's cat were kidnapped at the same time.

The kidnapper told Kian Blackwood to choose one of them. Only one could live.

I knelt on the ground, kowtowing until my head was bloody, and begged him, "Save Rosie! Save our daughter! She's only five years old!"

But he agonized, wavering between his daughter and the cat.

Serena Sterling cried out, "Kian, don't worry about Snowball! It's just a cat. But... it's the only thing I have left..."

He glanced at me, his expression complicated.

"I'll use a die to decide."

The kidnapper laughed loudly and agreed to the proposal. An odd number would save the daughter; an even number would save the cat.

The die landed. It was a three.

I instantly let out a sigh of relief, my body going limp.

But Kian Blackwood roared, "That doesn't count! My hand slipped! I demand a re-roll!"

The kidnapper said mockingly, "One finger for one chance to roll again."

Without a moment's hesitation, Kian Blackwood broke his own pinky finger.

I watched, horrified, as he rolled the die again with a trembling hand.

This time... it was a four.

...

"An even number! It's an even number!"

Kian Blackwood smiled in relief and shouted at the kidnapper.

The kidnapper grinned, his tone dripping with mockery. "HAHAHA! President Blackwood, you're a real piece of work!"

"You had the chance to save your daughter the first time, but you didn't. You'd rather save an animal. President Blackwood, you're truly a once-in-a-century talent!"

Kian Blackwood's face flushed red, but he didn't argue.

He just stubbornly repeated, "It was fate!"

My heart sank to the abyss.

My whole body was trembling, and my vision blurred with blood and tears.

Kian Blackwood carefully walked over to Serena Sterling, opened the cage, and cradled the terrified Ragdoll cat in his arms.

"It's okay now, Snowball. It's okay."

Serena Sterling threw herself into his arms, sobbing inconsolably.

Meanwhile, my daughter, Rosie, her little face was pale, her mouth was taped shut, and she had cried so hard her body was turning purple.

I rushed over and hugged Rosie, her small body shivering in my arms.

Only then did Kian Blackwood walk over, as if just remembering we were there.

"Is Rosie okay?" he asked nonchalantly, his gaze never leaving the cat in his arms.

My throat was raw from shock; I couldn't make a sound.

But Serena Sterling suddenly shrieked, "Kian, Snowball is dying! We need to get it to the hospital, quickly!"

"Okay, we'll go right now!"

Kian Blackwood anxiously clutched the cat, turned, and left without another glance at Rosie and me.

He just tossed a cold sentence at the kidnapper: "You'll get your money. Let my daughter go."

With that, he helped Serena Sterling and they hurried away.

The warehouse's heavy iron door slammed shut, cutting us off from the world outside.

I held my daughter, my body frozen solid.

The kidnapper walked over and squatted down in front of me.

A cigarette dangled from his lips as he sneered at me. "I've never seen anyone as incredible as your husband. What dumpster did you find him in?"

I stared at him blankly, unable to say a word.

The kidnapper blew a smoke ring in my face, snapping me out of my daze and making me choke and cough.

"How about this. I'm in a good mood today, so I'll give you another chance."

He held his phone out to me. "Call your husband."

"If he's willing to turn around and come back right now, I'll let you and your daughter go."

"How about it? Merciful enough for you?"

He even laughed at his own words.

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the phone.

I dialed Kian Blackwood's number.

The phone rang for a long time before it was answered.

"Hello?"

It was Kian Blackwood's voice. In the background, I could clearly hear Serena Sterling's anxious sobs.

"Kian..."

I was sobbing too hard to speak clearly. "Save Rosie... Please come back..."

An impatient voice came from the other end of the line.

"Elara! I'm getting emergency treatment for Snowball right now! It's gone into shock!"

"Rosie is my daughter. The kidnappers won't actually do anything to her once they get the money, so stop making trouble for me!"
