Chapter 2

The days after the gift bag were quiet in a loud way. Hayes didn't yell. He just stopped looking at me. He moved around our apartment like I was furniture that had insulted him.

Then he started taking Carmen everywhere.

It was small at first. A gallery opening I was supposed to attend with him. I showed up. He didn't. I stood by a white wall with a glass of champagne and checked my phone. A photo appeared on Carmen's feed. Hayes, at a different party, his hand on her lower back. The caption: "My person. Always."

I didn't cry. I took a screenshot. Evidence. A surgeon keeps good records.

Sutton called me the ice queen. I heard it through three different people. "She drove him away," he told a table of Hayes's friends at a dinner I wasn't invited to. "Cold woman. You can't freeze a man out and expect him to stay warm."

I wasn't cold. I was calculating. There's a difference. Cold people feel nothing. I felt everything. I just didn't perform it.

One night Hayes came home late, smelling like her perfume. I was in the kitchen, drinking coffee that had gone cold. Black, always black.

"You're still up," he said. Not a question.

"Your mother called," I said. "She wanted to know if we're coming to the family dinner Sunday."

"I can't. I have an event."

I set the cup down. "Another event. With Carmen?"

He stiffened. "Don't start."

"I'm not starting anything." I smiled. "I'm just asking which event, so I know what to wear."

"You're not invited."

The words landed flat between us. I let them sit. A surgeon knows when silence does more work than a scalpel.

"Not invited," I repeated. "To my own husband's evening."

Hayes straightened his cufflinks. "It's a work thing. Clients. Carmen has connections in the industry. You'd be bored."

"Of course." I kept the smile. "I'd hate to be bored."

He waited, like he expected me to fight. I didn't. That threw him more than any argument would have. He grabbed his keys and left.

I watched the door close. Then I picked up my phone and started making calls.

Carmen, meanwhile, got bolder. She arranged photos. A "candid" shot of Hayes fixing her necklace. Another of them laughing over wine. Each one stopped just short of undeniable. Nothing a lawyer could use. Nothing a gossip blog could print without a retraction. She was careful. I respected the craftsmanship.

But I had better tools.

The day I called the farm crew, I used a burner phone and a voice I'd practiced in the shower. Flat. Midwestern. Nothing like mine. The man on the other end asked what I needed. I told him. Pigs. Twelve of them. Healthy. Loud. Delivered to a SoHo loading dock at a precise time.

He didn't ask why. People in that line of work rarely do. I wired the money through three accounts and paid the premium for discretion.

Then I took out Hayes's black card.

Legally, it was mine to use. We were married. The card carried both our names. I had never used it for anything bigger than a dinner. That night, I used it to book a farm logistics crew, a transport van with climate control, and a cleaning deposit for a runway that would soon be covered in mud and chaos.

The date was Carmen's grand finale. An exclusive SoHo showcase. Front row would be packed with the same people who laughed at me behind my back. The same people who watched Hayes escort her through every room.

I scheduled everything the way I scheduled surgeries. Pre-op: secure the entrance. Procedure: release at the exact mark. Post-op: exit clean and deliver the announcement.

There was a particular pleasure in using Hayes's own money. Every dollar he'd spent proving his devotion to Carmen would now fund her humiliation. Poetic. Almost medical. The body rejects what poisons it.

I sat at my desk with the floor plan of the venue spread out. I traced the runway with one finger. Marked the side door. Timed the walk from the loading dock to the backstage curtain. Twelve pigs. Two handlers. One precise moment when Carmen reached the end of the runway.

I wanted her mid-turn. That was the moment she felt most powerful. Chin high. Hip cocked. The crowd rising. I wanted the pigs to hit the runway exactly then. Not before. Not after. Right at the peak of her triumph.

That was the thing about Carmen. She thought the stage belonged to her. She forgot that stages can be redesigned.

I pressed two fingers to my inner wrist. Pulse steady. Sixty-eight. Slower than the night of the showcase. Good.

The divorce papers sat in my folio on the desk. I didn't open them. I didn't need to. The plan was alive now, moving through its phases like a procedure I'd already completed in my head.

I closed the floor plan and looked at the photograph on my phone. Hayes and Carmen at the gallery. His hand on her back. Her smile aimed at the camera, not at him.

Let them have their photos. I was building a runway.

And pigs don't care who's watching.
