Chapter 5

The camera crew came in before Ian did. Two men, one lens, a boom mic already rigged, positioning themselves along the back wall like they'd rehearsed it in a van outside. Maybe they had. Nothing about Ian's operation left room for accident.

He walked in a beat behind them, jacket buttoned, papers in hand, the same folded set he'd offered me on the floor. Someone had touched up his face. His eyes looked wet in a way that wasn't crying, just glycerin and good lighting.

"I want this documented," he said, not to me. To the lens. "For the families watching. For the men we lost. I want them to see that even now, I'm trying to do this with grace."

He crouched again, knee angled the same careful way, and set the papers on the folding table between us. He clicked a pen open with his thumb, the small sound loud in that concrete room, and placed it in my hand the way you'd place a rose in a coffin.

"Sign it, Natasha," he said, gentle, patient, performing patience. "Let's end this the way we started it. With dignity."

I looked down at the pen in my palm. I looked at the papers—my name printed wrong on the second line, a small clerical error he'd never bothered to fix because he never thought I'd read closely enough to notice. I looked up at him.

Then I set the pen back on the table. Quietly. No flourish. Just the small click of plastic on metal, and silence after it.

He blinked. "Natasha."

I didn't answer.

"This is the easy way." His voice climbed a fraction, the practiced warmth thinning at the edges. "You don't want the hard way. Trust me."

I held his eyes and said nothing at all, and I watched something small and ugly move behind his composure—a flicker at his jaw, a half-second too long before his next breath. Ten years of watching men lie to me in rooms just like this one had taught me exactly what that flicker meant. He hadn't planned for silence. He'd only ever planned for my surrender.

Somewhere behind the lights he didn't control, other things were already moving.

Four miles out, doing ninety on the interstate with the armored transport rattling around her, Major Sarah Reyes had her phone pressed to one ear and her other hand braced against the door handle. She told me later she made the call before she'd even finished buckling in.

"This is Major Sarah Reyes, JSOC, flagging an active security violation," she said, flat and fast, reciting a case number she'd memorized on the drive. "Unauthorized access to classified personnel movement logs. Subject is Ian Crawford, civilian press credential holder." She read the timestamp Declan had pulled that morning, the database entry logged under Ian's name at an hour he had no business being anywhere near a secure terminal. "I need a digital lockdown initiated immediately, before assets can be scrubbed."

The voice on the other end asked her to confirm authorization.

"Authorization is General Declan Bennett, Commanding General, JSOC," she said. "He's aware I'm making this call. Lock it down."

It took her three minutes and forty seconds. She checked the clock on the dashboard when she hung up, because that was the kind of woman she was—precise even at ninety miles an hour, even with the world about to come apart four miles ahead of her.

In Georgetown, in a house with the blinds drawn against a gray afternoon, an old man sat in a leather chair with the television muted and his own memory doing the narrating instead. Ephraim Olson had watched the broadcast twice already, jaw tight, thumb worrying the edge of his service ring the way he used to before he gave an order he knew would cost something.

The phone rang. He answered on the first tone.

"It's happening today," Declan said, no preamble, the way he'd always spoken to Olson, soldier to soldier. "I need you at Arlington in forty minutes."

There was a pause. Long enough that Declan almost said his name again.

"I'll be there in thirty," Olson said.

He didn't ask questions. He never had, not with Declan, not about this. He rose from the chair slower than he used to, crossed to the small safe behind the framed photograph of his old command, and dialed the combination from memory. Inside, beneath a stack of retired orders he'd never had the heart to burn, sat a manila folder with my name on it—the personnel file he'd been ordered to destroy ten years ago and never had.

He tucked it under his arm like it weighed nothing at all, though it had weighed on him every day since. Then he reached for his cane, and for the first time in years, walked toward a door that led somewhere that mattered.

Back in that gray room, I was still looking at Ian, and Ian was still waiting for a woman who no longer existed to pick the pen back up.
