After My Husband Declined My Emergency Calls, I Took Everything
Chapter 3
The key turned in the lock at eleven-thirty.
I was sitting in the nursery with Rosalie asleep against my shoulder. The monitor glowed soft blue in the dark. I heard Colter's voice in the hallway. Then another voice. Higher. Familiar.
I stood slowly. I carried Rosalie to her bassinet and laid her down. She didn't wake. I walked to the living room.
Colter was taking off his coat. Julissa stood beside him in a black dress and heels. And cat ears. Black lace. The same ones from his luggage.
She smiled when she saw me.
"Serenity! I hope it's okay we stopped by. I wanted to drop off a gift for the baby."
She held up a small wrapped box. Tiffany blue.
I didn't move. I looked at Colter. He touched his collar.
"It'll just be a minute," he said. "Julissa wanted to see Rosalie."
Julissa walked past me into the nursery like she'd been invited. Like this was her home. I heard her heels on the hardwood. I heard her voice go soft and high.
"Oh my God. She's so tiny."
I followed. Colter stayed in the doorway.
Julissa leaned over the bassinet. She touched Rosalie's cheek with one finger. The cat ears tilted forward.
"She's beautiful," Julissa said. She looked up at me. Her smile didn't move. "She looks just like her daddy."
I stared at her. At the ears. At her hand on my daughter's face.
Something inside me went very quiet.
I turned and walked to the kitchen. I filled the electric kettle. I turned it on. I waited. The water heated. Steam rose. The light clicked off.
I poured the water into a pot. Not all of it. Just enough.
I carried the pot back to the nursery. Colter saw me first. His face changed.
"Serenity—"
I threw the water.
Julissa screamed. She stumbled backward into the wall. Her hands flew to her face. Colter shouted something. I didn't hear it. My ears were ringing.
Julissa was crying. Her dress was soaked. Her makeup ran black down her cheeks. The cat ears hung crooked.
I set the pot down on the floor. My voice came out flat and low.
"Get out of my house. Both of you. Now."
Colter stepped toward me. "Are you insane? You could have—"
"If either of you is still here in thirty seconds, I'll call the police and give them every photograph I have."
He stopped.
Julissa was still crying. She looked at Colter. He didn't look back.
"Serenity," he said. "Let's just—"
"Thirty seconds."
His mouth opened. Closed. He looked at Rosalie in the bassinet. Then at me.
I didn't blink.
He took Julissa's arm. She was shaking. He pulled her toward the door. She left the Tiffany box on the floor.
I followed them. I watched Colter grab his coat. I watched Julissa stumble in her heels. I watched them step into the hallway.
I closed the door. I locked it. I put the chain on.
I stood there for a long time. My hands weren't shaking. My heart wasn't racing. I felt nothing.
Rosalie started to cry.
I went back to the nursery. I picked her up. I held her against my chest and walked to the bedroom. I pulled the go-bag from the closet. The one I'd packed three days ago. Diapers. Formula. Clothes. Documents.
I added my laptop. My phone charger. The Cartier bracelet still in its box.
I sat on the bed with Rosalie in my arms. I opened my phone. I pulled up the folder labeled EVIDENCE. I scrolled through it one last time.
Photos. Texts. Receipts. Phone records. Instagram archives. The cat ears in his luggage. The declined hospital calls. Everything.
I opened a new message to Diana.
*Tomorrow night. File everything. I want it done before dessert.*
She replied in two minutes. *Confirmed. Victor is standing by. Are you safe?*
*I'm leaving in the morning. I'll be at the Peninsula.*
*Good. See you tomorrow at six.*
I deleted the thread. I looked down at Rosalie. Her eyes were closed. Her hand curled around my finger.
"It's almost over," I whispered.
I didn't sleep that night. I sat in the dark and watched the door. Colter didn't come back.
At six AM, I called a car. I carried Rosalie downstairs in her carrier. The doorman helped me with the bag. He didn't ask questions.
The city was still waking up. Gray light. Empty streets. The car pulled away from the curb.
I looked back once. The building disappeared behind us.
I turned forward. I didn't look back again.
