After My Husband Chose His Mistress, I Took Everything He Owned Novel Cover

After My Husband Chose His Mistress, I Took Everything He Owned

Five years ago, Thatcher Cole chose his mistress—and his wife walked away with everything he owned. Now, at 9:47 on a Tuesday night, a single message shatters the silence. He claims he saw a woman on Prince Street, recognized her walk, and spent an hour on a corner hunting for the right words. She reads it once, twice, a third time, barefoot on pale oak in her SoHo apartment, jasmine tea cooling on marble. That message is a dangerous door swinging open—back to the man who betrayed her, to the hunger she buried, and to the war for the empire he lost.

Chapter 2

The restaurant is called Le Gigot, tucked below street level on a West Village block where the streetlamps flicker gold through bare branches. I chose it the way I choose everything now — for what it will do, not for what it is.

Mallory's college roommate co-owns the wine bar next door. Mallory's manicurist eats lunch here every Thursday. Mallory herself has never set foot inside, but that doesn't matter. This town doesn't need you present to talk about you. It only needs a witness, and a phone.

I wear pale blue. Soft as a held breath. I let Thatcher pull out my chair, let my laugh land a half-second too loud when he says something almost funny, let my hand rest near his on the white tablecloth without quite touching. Effortless. That's the word I keep in my head like a metronome. Effortless.

"You seem different tonight," he says, watching me over the rim of his glass. "Lighter."

"Maybe I am." I tilt my head. "Maybe you're good for me."

He exhales like I've handed him something he's been drowning for. I file the reaction away and ask the waiter for the check before he can.

By morning, Isabelle is standing in my office doorway with her tablet against her chest, lips pressed into the particular flat line she gets when the gossip has finished its lap.

"Sasha Klein told Priya Malhotra you two were basically eye-fucking over the bread basket," she says. "Priya told her sister, who works with someone on Mallory's building board. By nine a.m. it had you engaged."

"Efficient."

"Terrifyingly." She studies me a beat too long. "You look pleased."

"I look like a woman who had a nice dinner." I don't look up from the loan agreement in front of me. "Anything else?"

She hesitates, then decides — wisely — not to ask the real question, and leaves.

—

I don't see what happens in that townhouse. I only hear about it later, in pieces, the way you hear thunder after you've already seen the sky go white.

Mallory asks Thatcher, flat out, if he's seen me. He doesn't answer — not a yes, not a no, just a long pause and a sentence about work that doesn't land anywhere. Silence has always been Thatcher's favorite lie. I know that better than anyone alive.

She starts showing up at his office unannounced. She goes through his calendar with her thumb shaking. She pays someone — I don't ask who, I don't need to — to pull his location data off his phone, and there it is: a pin dropped on a quiet West Village block, timestamped at 8:14 p.m., held for two hours and eleven minutes.

That night, apparently, she alternates between screaming at a man who won't argue with her and kneeling in front of her son with too much perfume and too many kisses, telling him he's her whole world, her only good thing, while Jayden holds his rabbit and doesn't understand why his mother's hands won't stop shaking.

I didn't plan that part. But I don't feel bad about it either.

—

Tuesday morning, the boutique smells like rain and hyacinth. I'm arranging white peonies near the window when the bell over the door doesn't chime — it slams, glass rattling in the frame.

"You *bitch.*"

Mallory's hair is unbrushed. Her coat is buttoned wrong. There's a wildness in her face I recognize — I wore that exact expression once, in a hospital corridor, five years ago, except no one came running for me.

"Mallory." I set the peonies down slowly. "I don't think we—"

"Don't." She's already across the room, knocking into the display table. White petals scatter like something torn apart. "Don't you *dare* stand there and act innocent. You've been circling him. Everyone's talking about it — dinner, the way you *looked* at him—"

"I had coffee with an old friend." My voice stays soft. Steady. "I didn't realize that required your permission."

She lunges. Her fingers close near my hair, and I let my body do the rest — a stumble backward, my shoulder catching the wooden shelf, a gasp that isn't faked so much as engineered, months of practice compressed into one perfect, breathless second. A vase tips. Water spreads dark across the floor.

"Please," I say, and my eyes go wide and wet, exactly the way I rehearsed in my bathroom mirror three nights ago. "Please don't hurt me."

Over her shoulder, I catch Diane Forsythe's face — one of my regulars, frozen by the ribbon counter, phone already half-raised. Another client near the register has stopped breathing. The camera above the door blinks its small red light, patient and merciless, recording every frame for later.

Mallory is screaming something else now, something about *stealing*, about *always taking what isn't yours*, and I don't fight her. I don't raise my voice. I let her rage break against my stillness like water against glass, and somewhere underneath the fear on my face, calm and clear as a held note, I think:

*There it is. There's the woman who pushed me down a staircase.*

*Now everyone gets to see her.*
