Chapter 2

I learned to smile again.

It wasn't hard. I'd been smiling my whole life — at dinner parties, at Lilliana's preschool drop-offs, across the table at Naya during our coffee dates. The muscle memory was still there. What changed was what lived behind it.

Massimo noticed the shift first. I caught him watching me one morning as I made breakfast, his coffee cup paused halfway to his mouth.

'You seem better,' he said carefully.

I cracked eggs into the pan. 'I took your advice. I've been talking to someone.'

Relief flooded his face. He set down his cup and crossed the kitchen to wrap his arms around me from behind. I felt his chin rest on my shoulder, his breath warm against my neck. 'I'm so glad, Rosie. I was really worried.'

I leaned back into him and closed my eyes. Cooper babbled from his bouncer. The eggs sizzled. From the outside, we looked like any other family on a Tuesday morning.

'I love you,' Massimo whispered.

'I know,' I said.

The notebook lived in my nightstand drawer now, growing thicker. I documented everything with the methodical precision of someone building a case, because that's exactly what I was doing. Thursday, January 12th: Massimo claimed emergency client dinner. Naya's Instagram went dark from 7 PM to 11 PM. Friday, January 20th: Massimo's car dashcam showed him driving toward the West Village at 9:47 PM. Naya posted a blurry wine glass photo with a geotag two blocks from his route.

I took screenshots. I printed them. I locked them away.

Lilliana asked me once why I was always writing. We were at the park, and she'd climbed into my lap while Cooper napped in his stroller.

'Mama's keeping a diary,' I told her, smoothing her hair.

'What's a diary?'

'A place where you write down important things so you don't forget them.'

She considered this seriously. 'Like my birthday?'

'Exactly like your birthday.'

She seemed satisfied with this answer and ran back to the swings. I watched her go, my hand resting on Cooper's stroller, and added another entry: January 28th, 3:47 PM. Massimo texted he'd be home by six. Naya just posted a story from the wine bar on Hudson Street. Same wine bar Massimo took me to on our second anniversary.

The anger had burned itself out weeks ago. What remained was colder. Cleaner.

I found Serena Voss through a college friend who'd gone through her own quiet devastation two years prior. The law office was in a midtown building with no nameplate on the door, just a suite number. Serena was in her late forties, silver-haired and sharp-eyed, the kind of woman who wore tailored suits like armor.

I laid the notebook on her desk. The printed screenshots. The Amazon review with the necklace visible in the frame.

'I need to know two things,' I said. 'What are my rights to the townhouse, and how do I make sure he can't gaslight me in court the way he's gaslighting me now?'

Serena opened the notebook. She read for a long time without speaking. When she finally looked up, her expression was unreadable.

'The townhouse is yours. Premarital asset, title in your name only. He has no claim.' She tapped the notebook. 'This is excellent documentation. You've done my job for me.'

'What about the gaslighting?'

Serena's smile was thin and cold. 'We don't let him control the narrative. We present facts, timestamps, financial records. We don't argue. We don't explain. We simply show the court what happened.' She slid a retainer agreement across the desk. 'If you're ready to do this, I'm ready to help you do it right.'

I signed without hesitation.

The voucher arrived three days later — a thick cream envelope with embossed lettering. The Ashford Estate, Hamptons. Ultra-exclusive couples' spa weekend. I'd called in a favor from a contact at a luxury hospitality group, someone who owed me from my consulting days. The reservation had a six-month waitlist. I'd gotten it in forty-eight hours.

I met Naya at our usual coffee shop on a Thursday afternoon. She was already there when I arrived, scrolling through her phone. She looked up and smiled when she saw me.

'Hey, lady. How are you?'

I slid into the seat across from her and set the envelope on the table. 'I need a favor.'

She picked it up, her eyebrows rising as she read. 'The Ashford Estate? Rosie, this is impossible to book.'

'I know. Massimo got it for our anniversary, but we're too exhausted with Cooper. I can't let it go to waste.' I reached across and squeezed her hand. 'Take someone special. You deserve it.'

Something flickered behind her eyes — calculation, triumph, something I couldn't quite name. Then she smiled, warm and sisterly, and pulled me into a hug.

'You're too good to me,' she whispered.

'I know,' I said.

She pulled back, already texting someone. 'I'll send you photos. Thank you, Rosie. Seriously.'

I watched her walk away, the envelope tucked under her arm, her steps light and quick. Through the coffee shop window, I saw her laugh at something on her phone.

I finished my coffee slowly. My hands were steady. My heart was calm.

The trap was set.
