Chapter 2

I was making tea when I saw it. The magazine lay open on the kitchen counter, its glossy pages catching the morning light streaming through the windows of my new apartment—a modest one-bedroom in Brooklyn, far from the Perkins penthouse where I'd once lived. My hands stilled on the kettle as my eyes locked onto the full-page advertisement. The bold headline read: 'Catalina Torres: Visions in Stone, A Retrospective.' Below it, displayed in high-definition color, was my father's sculpture.

My father's sculpture. The one he'd worked on for two years in his studio, the one I'd watched him bring to life with his calloused hands. The piece he'd been perfecting when he died. The sweeping curves of marble, the way light caught the surface just so—I knew every inch of it. I knew the story behind each mark, each decision. And now it was being presented as Catalina Torres' masterpiece.

I set the kettle down with a sharp clink and picked up the magazine. My fingers traced the image, trembling slightly. The caption beneath read: 'The centerpiece of Ms. Torres' groundbreaking exhibition, 'Silence and Stone,' opens next week at the Whitman Gallery.' My chest tightened as I read further. Catalina was being hailed as a 'visionary sculptor' and 'emerging voice in contemporary art.' There was even a quote from her about the piece: 'It represents the silence within us all, the places we cannot speak.'

I laughed, a hollow sound that echoed in my empty kitchen. Silence. She was speaking about silence while stealing from a dead man. A man who had actually understood silence, who had turned it into beauty with these very hands.

I set the magazine down on the table and sat very still for a long time, my hands folded in my lap. I didn't cry. I didn't shake. I simply sat, staring at the image of my father's stolen legacy, and felt something inside me harden.

Four days later, I stood in my small home office, surrounded by papers. Photographs of my father working on the sculpture, taken over the two years he'd spent creating it. Original sketches with his handwritten annotations, detailing his vision and process. Receipts for the rare marble he'd sourced specifically for this piece. Correspondence with his longtime gallery agent confirming the work's authorship and its storage location at the Perkins estate after his death.

I arranged everything in a black leather portfolio, my movements precise and methodical. Each document was placed with care, each piece of evidence positioned to tell the story of theft and deception. I didn't rush. I didn't need to. This wasn't about anger or revenge. This was about truth.

When I was finished, I closed the portfolio and ran my hand over its smooth surface. My father had taught me that art was about honesty, about creating something real from the raw materials of life. Catalina had taken his work and tried to make it hers, but she couldn't change the truth that lived in every line, every curve of that stone.

The next morning, I drove to the Perkins estate. I didn't call ahead. I didn't want to give them time to prepare, to hide the evidence, to spin their lies. I parked my car at the end of the long driveway and walked up to the front door, the portfolio tucked under my arm.

I rang the bell, my heart steady, my resolve firm. The door opened, and I found myself face-to-face with Arian's housekeeper, Mrs. Chen, who looked surprised to see me.

'Mrs. Perkins,' she said, her voice hesitant.

'Ms. Wells,' I corrected her gently. 'I'm here to see Catalina.'

She led me into the living room, where I found Catalina standing in front of the fireplace, rehearsing what I assumed was her gallery talk. Arian sat in an armchair nearby, watching her with a quiet satisfaction that made my stomach turn.

Catalina stopped mid-sentence when she saw me, her eyes narrowing slightly. 'Sloane,' she said, her voice smooth and controlled. 'What an unexpected surprise.'

I didn't respond to her greeting. Instead, I walked to the coffee table and laid out the contents of my portfolio—the photographs, the sketches, the receipts, the correspondence. I arranged them carefully, methodically, as I had done at home.

'This is my father's work,' I said, my voice calm and clear. 'The sculpture you're claiming as your own. I have proof.'

Catalina stared at the documents for exactly two seconds. Then, with a speed and precision that spoke of practice, she burst into tears.

'How dare you?' she sobbed, her voice trembling with what sounded like genuine hurt. 'You're delusional with grief. You're staging an attack against me because you can't accept that Arian has moved on.'

I looked at her, at the tears streaming down her face, and felt nothing but a cold, clear certainty. She was good, I had to give her that. But she wasn't good enough to fool me. Not anymore.
