Hunted by the Possessive Alpha King Novel Cover

Hunted by the Possessive Alpha King

I woke from a nightmare into a living hell—stripped of my modern life and made a nameless slave in Blackstone Keep's brutal dungeons. Then I learned the master of this fortress is Archon Etienne Callahan, the inhumanly strong man who attacked me during the Moonwise Festival. Now he hunts for the girl whose scent calmed the poison in his veins. To survive, I crippled my own knee and played the clumsy fool, hoping to be sent to the kitchens where he'd never look. My plan worked—until a frantic cook pointed straight at me. "I'll take her," she said, then whispered, "I saw what you did in the garden." My cover is blown, his invisible net is closing, and my fight for freedom just became a deadly game of hide-and-seek under the monster's nose.

Chapter 3

Haylee Harrington POV:

Matron Thorne's silence stretched, freezing the air in the room. Every eye was on me.

I could feel Tessa's hateful glare, the curious and jealous stares of the other girls. My fingers were still wet from the dirty water, and the cold clung to them, making my hands stiff.

I met Matron Thorne's scrutinizing gaze, my expression neither subservient nor defiant. Just calm. Waiting.

Finally, she broke eye contact and turned to the trembling Tessa.

"For liars," she announced, her voice like chipping ice, "the punishment in Blackstone Keep is twenty lashes."

Tessa let out a desperate shriek and collapsed to the floor. "No! Matron! I was wrong! I'll never do it again!"

"And for wasting cleaning water, three days without food," Matron Thorne added, her tone unwavering.

The guards moved in at once, dragging Tessa out like a sack of refuse. Her screams faded down the corridor.

The room was utterly silent. When the other girls looked at me now, their expressions had changed completely. Pity and schadenfreude were gone, replaced by awe and a sliver of fear.

Matron Thorne turned back to me. "Your tunic is soiled. Come with me."

A knot of anxiety tightened in my stomach, but I followed her obediently. Cora shot me a worried glance, and I gave her a barely perceptible shake of my head.

The Matron led me through several corridors to a storeroom. She took a clean, though old, gray slave's tunic from a shelf. The fabric was rough to the touch and smelled faintly of lye.

"Change," she commanded, then turned her back to me, granting me a sliver of privacy.

It was a subtle gesture of respect, a luxury in this place. I quickly changed into the clean clothes. The fabric was coarse, but the feeling of being dry helped to soothe my frayed nerves.

"You are clever," Matron Thorne said suddenly, her back still to me. "You knew that to argue was useless."

"I was only following the rules, Matron," I answered quietly, maintaining my posture of deference.

"The rules?" She let out a soft, unreadable hum. "Here, the rules are made by the strong. But knowing how to use them to protect yourself is the first step to survival."

She turned around, her sharp gaze landing on me once more. "You. You are Haylee Harrington. From now on, that is your name. Not a number."

I froze. In this place where slaves were stripped of their identities, she was allowing me to keep mine. This was more than a reward; it was a form of recognition.

"Do not disappoint me, Haylee Harrington," she said, then turned and walked away.

I stood there for a long moment, a storm of emotions churning inside me. I had won the first round, but the price was stepping directly into Matron Thorne's line of sight.

When I returned to the training room, the way the other girls looked at me confirmed it. News of what had happened had already spread.

Lena sidled up to me. "You're incredible," she whispered. "To actually earn the Matron's favor."

I just shook my head and picked up my rag to continue working. I knew this was far from a time to relax.

For the rest of the training, no one dared to bother me. I completed my tasks quietly, observing everyone, learning every detail about this new world.

I noticed that while Matron Thorne didn't speak to me again, her gaze would occasionally linger on me for a moment longer than on the others.

I had, against my will, distinguished myself from the other new slaves. It wasn't my intention, but now that it had happened, I had to use this special status carefully.

That night, back in the cell, Cora asked anxiously what had happened. I told her I was fine and shared half of the coarse black bread from my dinner ration with her.

"Why are you helping me?" Cora asked, confused.

"Because in here, a friend is more useful than an enemy," I said softly. It was a lesson I'd learned in my past life's corporate world, and it applied just as well here.

That night, the nightmare did not return. Instead, my mind was consumed with thoughts of the future. I had to figure out a way to secure the most advantageous position for myself on the upcoming assignment day.

Matron Thorne's favor might help, but it could also push me into even greater danger. I had to tread very, very carefully.
