Chapter 4

Cade POV

“Alpha Cade!” everyone cheered, I bow my head lowly then lifts it back up. My father crossed his hands around my shoulder. He smiled happily and nods his head.

“Double celebration for us Nightshade, Alpha Cade is plus one today” he shouted and everyone gave a round of applause.

I smiled and looked away until my eyes met with Zyra’s eyes. My smile disappeared immediately, she wore this stern look on her face and she surprisingly looked away before I could.

Oh, look like someone has some guts now.

I watch her made her way out of the crowd back into the mansion. She wants to get on my nerves; I’ll deal with her for that.

Different pack members came around to congratulate me. I’ve heard enough of them.

The atmosphere was filled with celebration. At the left side, right side, behind me and every corner I turn my eyes to.

I made my way into the mansion, Kevin and Alex walked beside me to the hall where the whole birthday celebration is going on.

Everything is going so well, now I have the power, birthday celebration is on and the next thing would be to find my mate.

I stood at the head of the table, watching as my pack members celebrate my birthday with food, drink, and music. It is really a joyous occasion.

I grab a glass of champagne and turned around to see Aria walking towards me with her glass of wine swirling in her hands.

“Alpha Cade” she smiled as she stood before me and bowed her head lowly.

“Aria, it’s good to see you again. Hope you are having fun” I ask her with a raised brow.

“Yes I am thank you an happy birthday Alpha Cade” she smiled then took out a small box behind her.

“Oh, for me?” I mouthed and she nods her head.

“I got you a little present” she replied and gestured me to open the box. I took it into my hands and slowly opened it to see a diamond wrist watch in it. I chuckle lowly and look back at her, “Well, thank you. I’d add this to my walk-in closet” I reply then shut the box close.

“I am happy you love it, you’re a man with high class” she smiled

Okay, she's 100% right. I am indeed a man with high class and taste.

“So, I was wondering if you’d be my mate”

I laugh lowly at her statement. “You want to be my mate don’t you?” I smirk

“Uh huh, who wouldn’t love to be your mate? Though I've felt nothing yet. Have you?” she ask and I shook my head

“No, not yet…well let’s see if you would be my mate” I replied

“Let’s see” she responded and immediately everyone in the room cheered.

Our attention turned to where the noise came from and saw two of our pack members smooching at the corner of the room. “Looks like Sam already found his mate. I better find mine too” Aria said with a sigh.

She took one last look at me before she turned away to leave, swaying her ass.

She is always trying to seduce me, she really has some guts.

I laugh lowly and turned to see my dad and my mom at the other corner of the hall engrossed in a conversation. She kept smiling all through.

I took another sip from my glass and felt this sense of unease. I understand this feeling. on this day, I am supposed to find a mate and I am not sure if I am ready for that kind of commitment. I turned around to look at Aria to see if she’s feeling the same way but no. If it is not Aria, then who could it be?

Suddenly, I noticed a member standing at the edge of the clearing, watching other pack members celebrate.

Something about her caught my attention. I felt this kind of attraction towards her then I slowly took steps to her.

Before I got to her, she turned around and that was when I could the face of the person I am attracted to. She carved her brows at me and shook her head.

Zyra POV

I don’t know how to describe this feeling, but it’s a feeling of a strange pull towards someone. I can feel the person come close, now I know…I’m getting a mate. I turn around with a happy smile and immediately, I got disappointed at who I am seeing before me. Of all people, why should it be Alpha Cade???

As he approached me, he realized I am his mate. I can tell every other pack understands our moment. Scowls and jeers were heard from the rest of the pack while Alpha Cade squeezed his brows at me with a look on disappointment written all over his face.

“I have always imagined my mate to be someone I would love and cherish, but you…someone i care less about”

I forced a smile on my face. Murmurs and whispers filled the atmosphere, different eyes staring at me with hatred.

“Oh my goodness, she is his mate?”

“Why her?”

“Damn, a low class bitch is mated to our hot Alpha? What a shame to our pack”

Different comments up and down, I hate this.

“Do you think I want anything to do with you?” I ask Alpha Cade seeing the way he glared at me.

“I don’t want anything to do with your pack too” I continued and he scoffed.

“You are being hostile huh? I have never seen someone being hostile to their mate, and don’t worry, I will make it easier for you since you want nothing to do with me and my pack” he smiled making me clueless of what he meant.

Alpha Cade stepped back slowly with a side smile on his face, he wore this proud look on his face before he spoke up.

“Zyra, I reject you as my mate. I, Alpha Cade of Nightshade pack reject you Zyra Xander as my mate” he said and my eyes widen immediately, I can feel tears welling up in my eyes.

I wouldn’t want to be his mate, but now we have the wolf bond between us. How am I supposed to live without my mate?

“How could I love an omega as pathetic as you are, you are weak and will never be good enough for me and my pack. I have no desire to waste my time on you.”

Tearfully, I replied “Alpha Cade, please don’t say that. You shouldn’t” I replied shakily.

His eyes narrowed and he bared his teeth. His voice, low and rumbling, reverberated through the clearing. “I reject you” he said again. His words piercing my heart like needles.

I blinked rapidly in surprise and stepped back as he narrowed his eyes and jabbed his muzzle towards me.

“I choose not to take you as my mate. I am the leader of the pack, I said so”

I backed away slowly, my eyes sad but accepting. I bowed my head slightly and Alpha Cade walked away.

The library had always been my sanctuary in the Shadowridge Pack house. Tucked away in the corner with my swollen feet propped on a cushioned ottoman, I traced my fingers over the leather-bound volume of pack histories—a small comfort during my ninth pregnancy. The baby kicked softly inside me, a gentle reminder of what I'd lost eight times before. "Just a little longer," I whispered, rubbing my belly. "Stay strong, little one." My wolf, Luna, had been unusually quiet these past years. I'd grown accustomed to her silence, especially during pregnancies when the effort to protect our unborn pup seemed to drain her strength. But something felt different today. "Elena." Her voice suddenly echoed in my mind, sharper than I'd heard in years. I stiffened, nearly dropping my book. "Luna?" "Listen." Her command vibrated through me with unexpected force.

I was the Luna candidate of the Silver Moon Pack. During the mark ceremony, my sister Nicole barged in, her clothes disheveled. Tears streamed down her face as she accused me: "Sister, if you wanted to become Luna, why did you have to hurt me like this?" My mate-to-be, Malakai, also pointed at me, declaring me unworthy to serve the pack. Then he turned and proposed to Nicole, nominating her as the new Luna. I was thrown into the pack's punishment chamber, stripped of my rank, and branded an Omega. The pack despised me. The day I was released, Malakai looked at me, covered in wounds, his eyes slightly moist: "Madelyn, you've suffered." "Just wait a little longer. Everything will be over soon." "Once Nicole successfully takes over as Luna in ten days, I'll take you as my mate." I'd heard this "wait a little longer" hundreds of times before. I looked at the man before me, no longer the one I loved. I clenched the note in my hand tighter.

The moon-daisies bloomed perfectly tonight, their silver petals catching the light as I arranged them in crystal vases around the great hall. Thirty years. Three decades of devotion, sacrifice, and careful cultivation—of both these flowers and the Ironhowl Pack. "More candles in the east corner, Elena," I instructed the young Omega, smoothing down my ceremonial silver gown. "The elders prefer brighter lighting." "Yes, Luna Luciana." Elena scurried away, her movements quick and efficient. I touched the moon-daisy pendant at my throat—my secret talisman, my reminder of what once was and what could have been. Theodore's pendant. My fingers lingered there as I surveyed the hall one final time. "Everything is perfect," I whispered to myself. "It has to be." The great hall of Ironhowl Pack House glittered with silver and blue decorations.

The Silverfang Pack House loomed ahead like a fortress carved from stone and ambition. I'd traveled three days down from the mountain sanctuary where my family had lived for generations, where the air smelled of pine and healing herbs, where the old ways still mattered. My grandfather's words echoed in my mind as the car pulled up to the entrance: "Trust your nose, Camilla. It never lies." I'm Camilla Wells, last of the mountain Healers, and I was here to fulfill a treaty older than my grandmother's grandmother. To become Luna to an Alpha I'd never met. The Beta who greeted me wasn't Alexander. Marcus Thompson barely glanced at me as he gestured toward the entrance. "You're late. The ceremony starts in an hour." "The roads were—" "Save it." The evening was perfectly ordinary in the Silverfang pack house. I was sitting on the velvet sofa in the common room, sipping tea and scrolling through my phone. Then, the mind-link exploded. It wasn't a voice. It was a violent flood of images, broadcasted anonymously to every allied pack channel at once. My phone buzzed fiercely in my hand, syncing with the mental barrage. I blinked, trying to process the sudden influx of data. Screenshots. Dozens of them. A man was on his knees.
