His Wife, The Underworld King Novel Cover

His Wife, The Underworld King

For three years I played the obedient, unseen wife of Julian Falcone, ruthless Don of the East Coast—while secretly running the underground network that laundered his fortune and secured his crown. Then he brought Elena, his childhood sweetheart, home from Europe, paraded her at the syndicate gala, and installed her in our master suite while his family mocked me as a nameless civilian. Nearly five months pregnant with his heir, I watched him spend the very funds I had cleaned to build her a throne. Alone on a cold operating table, my last shred of devotion died. I packed my suitcases, left the annulment papers on his desk, and walked out. At the National Commission Summit, I will step from the shadows as the true Boss of the W.E.N. Network—and let my husband watch his world burn.

Chapter 2

Seraphina POV

The Falcone estate was entombed in silence when I returned, having procured a separate car from the gala to escape the performance.

I stood in the vast kitchen, the tick of an old clock on the wall marking two in the morning as I poured a glass of water.

Measured, heavy footsteps sounded in the hall before Julian appeared. His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt unbuttoned at the neck to reveal the script of his syndicate tattoos.

“Why did you leave?” Julian asked, his voice cleaving the quiet.

He approached, closing the space between us, and reached to brush a strand of hair from my temple. It was the most tender gesture he had made in three years.

“You seemed weary,” he murmured.

I looked into his dark, assessing eyes, seeing the mechanism of the performance. He was touching me because Elena might be watching from the hall, or because he needed to reassert ownership over his property. A fresh wave of revulsion coiled in my gut—the memory of his fists still bruised beneath my gown.

“I am retiring for the night,” I said. I took a step back, and his hand fell to his side.

The next morning, my resolve having hardened to flint, I drove to the industrial district, where the air tasted of rust and coal.

I entered a secured building and took a private lift to the top floor. Val was waiting. She was my confidante from university, my personal solicitor, and the shadow Consigliere to an empire Julian knew nothing of.

“Draft the annulment,” I said, setting my purse on her desk.

Val’s fingers stilled on her keyboard. She stared at me. “Sera, you are married to the Don of the Falcone Family. They do not grant divorces. They grant graves.”

“I want a clean severance,” I said, my voice betraying no tremor. “No claim on territory, no alimony, not a single note from the Falcone treasury. I want only the papers that will spring the lock on this cage.”

Val leaned back, tapping a pen against her chin. “Forgoing his assets is the only move that prevents a war over territory. But your survival?”

I looked out at the city’s jagged skyline. “My own assets are insulated.”

A slow, dangerous smile spread across Val’s face. “The W.E.N. Network. You’ve been building it directly beneath his feet for three years, for this very moment.”

“I need the papers by nightfall, Val.”

I returned to the Falcone estate as the sun bled across the horizon, casting long shadows like bruises across the grounds.

I walked into the grand parlour and stopped. Carmela Falcone, my mother-in-law, was seated on a velvet divan. She was laughing, a shared, intimate sound, with the woman beside her—Elena Bianchi.

Carmela’s laughter died when she saw me. Her expression curdled into a mask of aristocratic disgust.

“Seraphina,” Carmela said, waving a manicured hand as if shooing a servant. “Go to the kitchen. Prepare a plate of fruit for Elena. She has had a trying day attending to Family business.”

Elena looked at me, her smile a confection of saccharine poison. “Oh, do not trouble her, Carmela. I am certain Seraphina is occupied with… whatever it is she does.”

I offered no reply.

I turned and ascended the grand staircase, their whispers a faint buzzing behind me.

In the master suite, I went not to the walk-in closet but to a deep recess where two battered suitcases, the ones I had arrived with, were stored. I did not touch the rows of couture gowns or the velvet boxes of jewels. I packed only my worn sweaters, my forged documents, and the few articles that belonged to the girl I was before this gilded cage was shut.

I snapped the latches on the suitcases closed.

I walked out of the bedroom, the heavy luggage bumping against my legs as I descended the stairs.

Carmela stood at the foot of the staircase. Her eyes fixed on the luggage, widened, and her face flushed a deep, mottled purple.

“What is the meaning of this?” she demanded, stepping forward to block my path.

“I am divorcing your son,” I said, my voice as devoid of heat as the marble beneath my feet.

“You cannot!” Carmela’s voice rose to a shriek, her carefully constructed composure cracking. “You are Falcone property!”

I met her glare. “Do you truly believe you can hold me?”

Elena emerged from the parlour. She stood behind Carmela, placing a steadying, almost proprietary hand on the older woman’s shoulder. “It is all right, Mother,” Elena said softly, her use of the title a deliberate incision. “Let her have her tantrum.”

I descended the final steps. I walked until I stood directly before Elena, looking into her eyes.

“The throne is yours now,” I whispered. “Try not to bleed on it.”

I moved past them, my destination the heavy iron front doors.

Carmela spun around, her voice a roar that filled the cavernous hall. “You step through that door, Seraphina, and you are dead to this Family! Omerta!”

I pushed the doors open. The night air struck my face, a clean, sharp promise of a world outside this tomb.

I knew I would not return.

Behind me, the heavy doors thudded shut. Somewhere in that house, the annulment papers waited on his desk like a dormant bomb. And deep in my womb, the phantom ache of what had been ripped away pulsed with every step—a pain I would soon turn into his ruin.
