Chapter 3

The yellow cab ground to a halt beneath the glass canopy of The Azure on Park Avenue. Stella paid the driver, pulled her coat tight against the damp night air, and stepped out onto the pavement. As her heels clicked across the polished marble toward the private elevator bank, she pulled her secondary phone from her purse and speed-dialed her closest confidante.

The call connected on the second ring.

On the other end of the line, Melanie Vance—a top-tier corporate attorney—listened in heavy silence as Stella delivered a concise, brutal summary of what she had seen through the hotel door. When Melanie finally spoke, the initial concern in her voice had vanished, replaced by the cool, lethal precision of a seasoned lawyer.

"Did he harm you? Are you in a safe place right now, Stella?"

"I'm safe," Stella replied flatly, stopping before the bronze elevator doors. "I'm in the lobby of our building. He's... still at the St. Regis with Amber."

Melanie let out a sharp, incredulous breath. "That bastard. Listen to me, Stella. Do not go upstairs alone. Do not confront him if he comes back. Stay right where you are. I'm getting into my car now."

"No, Mel. I need to go up," Stella said, her tone perfectly even. "I'm packing my personal belongings. I'm leaving tonight."

"Stella," Melanie's tone hardened over the line. "From this exact second, I am acting as your legal counsel. Do not touch anything, and do not engage with him or his family. Anything you take could jeopardize a financial settlement."

"There won't be a settlement," Stella said softly. "I signed a prenup. I get nothing, and I want nothing. I just want out."

The prenuptial agreement had been ruthless, drafted by Carlisle Group lawyers to ensure a clean exit with zero corporate liability. Blinded by what she had once thought was love, Stella had signed it a year ago without asking a single question.

Melanie sighed, the sound crackling through the speaker. "Fine. I'll have the petition drafted by morning. Where are you staying tonight? My guest room is ready."

"I have my old studio in DUMBO," Stella said. It was the one secret space she had maintained from before the wedding. "I'll call you when I get there."

Ending the call, Stella swiped her keycard and stepped into the private elevator.

The doors parted directly into the penthouse foyer. The air was heavy with the faint scent of Julian's cedarwood cologne—a scent that used to bring her comfort, now sickeningly familiar.

Ignoring the sprawling, art-filled living room, she walked straight into the master walk-in closet.

Half the space was occupied by Julian's tailored suits and gleaming watch winders. The other half was a monument to her temporary title as Mrs. Carlisle: rows of pristine designer gowns, shelves of silk scarves, and drawers of fine jewelry he had purchased through his executive assistant.

Julian's sister, Isabelle, had once sneered at a family dinner that Stella was nothing more than "an expensive coat hanger."

Stella didn't touch a single luxury item he had bought. Instead, reaching into the dark corner of the top shelf, she pulled out two scuffed leather suitcases—the ones she had brought with her a year ago.

She packed with mechanical efficiency: a few pairs of worn jeans, simple cotton t-shirts, her laptop, and her architecture reference manuals.

Moving into the quiet study, her eyes landed on the framed wedding photograph resting on the dark mahogany desk. She picked it up, stared at her own foolishly hopeful expression for a brief second, and turned it face down on the blotter.

Beside the frame, her gaze shifted to the locked drawer at the base of the desk. She pulled a small brass key from her purse, unlocked it, and retrieved a plain manila folder containing the original photocopies of the international design awards she had won under a pseudonym before her marriage—the parts of her identity she had buried to play his quiet wife.

Right beneath the awards lay a thick, gold-embossed legal document: The Seraphina Sinclair Heritage Art Trust.

Stella's fingers brushed the crisp parchment, her posture straightening as her dark eyes settled on the text.

Victor Pacheco had assumed that trading his daughter into a Carlisle marriage would give him the ultimate leverage to dismantle her late mother's estate and liquidate her private art collection to cover his debts. He had no idea that the trust's co-signatory clause was bound directly to the legal status of the Carlisle matriarch. As long as Stella held the title of 'Mrs. Carlisle' on paper, neither her father nor his creditors could touch a single piece of Seraphina's legacy. He had orchestrated this marriage as a trap for her—unaware that she would use it as the very cage to lock him out.

She closed the drawer, leaving the trust intact, and walked back to the foyer with her suitcases.

Mrs. Higgins, the housekeeper, emerged from the staff quarters, her hands trembling as she saw the luggage. "Mrs. Carlisle? Are you... going on a trip?"

Stella paused, adjusting the leather strap over her shoulder. "It's Ms. Pacheco," she corrected gently. "And yes. I'm moving out."

Mrs. Higgins stood frozen, completely speechless.

As Stella reached the heavy front door, the penthouse intercom unit mounted on the wall began to chime persistently, the screen flashing with Julian's caller ID.

Stella didn't even glance at the flashing screen. With deliberate care, she slid her five-carat diamond engagement ring off her finger and set it on the console table beside his black corporate credit card.

She pulled the heavy door shut behind her, letting the deadlock click firmly into place.

Down on Park Avenue, the rain had softened to a fine mist. As she hailed a cab, her secondary phone buzzed in her coat pocket with an incoming call from Julian.

Stella pulled out the device, pressed 'Reject', and blocked his number without hesitation.

She slid into the backseat, gave the driver her DUMBO address, and watched through the rear window as the glass tower of The Azure retreated into the dark New York skyline.
