Chapter 3

The next morning, Katherine sat across from Julian Foster in his spacious office, a cup of coffee warming her hands. The adrenaline from the previous night's surgery had faded, leaving a deep-seated weariness in its place.

Julian, who had been her senior resident when she was just a wide-eyed intern, studied her face with concern. "You okay, Kate? Being back in New York... is it what you expected?"

Katherine's gaze drifted to the window, to the sprawling city below. "I didn't come back for the job, Julian. You know that." She paused, then finally gave voice to the secret she had held for five long years. "I'm here to find my third child."

Julian's coffee cup stopped halfway to his lips. "Third? Katherine, I thought..."

A raw, ancient pain flickered in her eyes. "I was pregnant with triplets. When I gave birth, it was premature, chaotic. The hospital in Philadelphia told me one of them... a girl... had complications and didn't survive."

She reached into her wallet and pulled out a tiny, worn photograph of a newborn, impossibly small, wrapped in a pink hospital blanket. "They never let me see her. They said it would be too traumatic. But I never believed them. I have this feeling, Julian, a mother's instinct. She's alive. And she's here, in this city."

Julian looked from the photo to the fierce conviction in Katherine's eyes. He nodded slowly, his voice firm. "I understand. Anything you need-hospital records, private investigators, anything-it's yours. We'll find her."

His words were a comfort, a small anchor in her turbulent world. But before she could thank him, the private line on his desk buzzed. He answered it, his expression shifting from friendly concern to professional seriousness.

"Dr. Foster's office."

Katherine watched as his eyes widened slightly. He listened for a long moment, his gaze flicking over to her.

The call was from a man named Ryan Hayes, executive assistant to the CEO of Kramer Industries. His tone was polite but carried the unmistakable weight of money and power.

"Dr. Foster," the voice on the phone said, "Mr. Emmett Kramer would like to retain Dr. Aella's services for his grandfather, Mr. Harrison Kramer. It's a highly complex cardiac case. Price is not an object."

Julian glanced at Katherine. She was staring down at the tiny photo in her hand, lost in her own world, not paying attention to the call.

He covered the receiver with his palm and mouthed two words to her: "The Kramers."

Katherine's body went rigid. The coffee cup trembled in her hands, hot liquid sloshing over the rim and onto her fingers. She barely felt the burn. The name was a physical blow, knocking the air from her lungs.

Julian saw her reaction and immediately understood. He turned back to the phone, his voice cool and unwavering. "I'm very sorry, Mr. Hayes. Dr. Aella's surgical schedule is booked for the foreseeable future. She does not accept private consultations."

There was a pause on the other end. Ryan Hayes was not used to being told no. "Dr. Foster, perhaps you misunderstand. We are prepared to offer any amount. Shall we start at ten million dollars?"

"This is not about money," Julian replied, his tone firm. "Dr. Aella has her principles. The answer is no."

Another silence, this one colder. "We'll be in touch," Ryan Hayes said, and the line went dead.

Julian hung up the phone and looked at Katherine, whose face was now pale as chalk. "Are you alright?"

She took a deep, shuddering breath, forcing the panic down. "I'm fine. Thank you, Julian. For that."

She knew what this meant. Emmett was looking for her. Not for Katherine Perry, the wife he had discarded, but for Dr. Aella, the surgeon he needed. The irony was a bitter pill in her throat. It also meant her time was running out.

"I have to go," she said, standing up abruptly. "I can't let them see me here."

"Go," Julian said, nodding. "I'll handle them. But be warned, Kate. The Kramers don't give up easily."

Katherine hurried out of the office, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had to find Chloe, and then she had to disappear before her past and present collided in a way that could destroy everything.

In his office on the 80th floor of the Kramer Industries tower, Emmett listened to Ryan Hayes's report, his brow furrowed in a deep scowl.

"She refused?" Emmett asked, his voice dangerously quiet. "A doctor refused the Kramer family?"

"Her representative, the Chief of Surgery at St. Ambrose, was quite adamant, sir," Ryan said. "He claims Dr. Aella is notoriously private, never makes public appearances."

The refusal, the mystery, it didn't just annoy Emmett; it ignited his predatory instinct. He was a man who got what he wanted. Always.

"The more mysterious she is, the more I want to see who's behind the mask," he said, rising from his desk and grabbing his suit jacket.

"Get the car," he commanded Ryan. "We're going to St. Ambrose. There isn't a door in this city that money and power can't open."

As the elevator descended, an image of Katherine's face flashed in his mind-the way she had looked that last morning, calm and defiant. He shook his head, annoyed at the intrusion. That chapter was closed.

He had no way of knowing that the person he was about to move heaven and earth to find was the very woman he was trying so desperately to forget.
