Chapter 5

The emergency board hearing took place in a sprawling, glass-walled conference room overlooking the manicured lawns of Westbridge Academy. Seven board members sat around a massive oak table, their expressions identical masks of practiced concern.

Vanessa Whitmore didn't even wait for the board president to officially open the floor. She bypassed the school administration entirely, sliding a single sheet of paper across the polished wood toward me.

"Let's save everyone some time," Vanessa announced, her voice echoing sharply in the large room. "Milo withdraws permanently, effective immediately. You sign this statement acknowledging his violent tendencies, his emotional instability, and his family adaptation issues. In return, Westbridge will generously agree not to hold your family accountable for the disruption you've caused."

Principal Helena Crest folded her hands, nodding in smooth agreement. "It is the most graceful exit available, Ms. Vale. We must prioritize a cohesive environment."

"You locked a five-year-old in a windowless closet until he vomited," I said, my voice dead level.

"The quiet room is a necessary safety protocol for aggressive students," Helena countered without missing a beat. "And as for the plastic bracelet, it was a normal toy dispute among peers. If the item was truly a vital medical device, you failed to declare its importance on his admission forms. The school cannot be held liable for undisclosed conditions."

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to. I reached into my bag and pulled out a stack of documents, laying them flat on the table one by one.

"This is the school nurse’s official log from yesterday," I said, tapping the first page. "It documents a severe temperature spike and extreme physical distress. Next to it is the isolation record, proving he was locked alone for forty-two minutes."

I placed another sheet down. "These are the security system logs. They prove the lunchroom cameras were manually disabled on three separate occasions this week. And this," I finished, dropping the teacher’s behavioral file on top, "is Ms. Gable’s own written admission that she systematically isolated my son at the back of the classroom."

I looked up, meeting the eyes of the board members. At the far end of the table, a man in a tailored charcoal suit—Elias Voss, the holder of the school’s largest endowment fund—watched me in absolute silence.

"I have one simple question," I said, holding the room's attention. "Why do the rules only ever apply to Milo?"

Vanessa slammed her hand against the table. The facts were cornering them, so she immediately pivoted to the only weapon she had left.

"How dare you lecture us on rules?" Vanessa snapped, glaring at me. "Look at your family. You don't even have a job. Your husband hasn't shown his face once since the boy enrolled. You are raising a child who talks about blood and taking down adults as if it's normal conversation. You have absolutely no right to sit in this room and criticize this institution."

Helena leaned forward, sensing the shift in momentum. She pushed the behavioral statement an inch closer to me.

"If you sign the withdrawal, we can write this entire unfortunate incident off as a mutual misunderstanding," Helena offered, her tone laced with a heavy threat. "If you refuse, Westbridge will officially notify every other private institution in the district about Milo’s violent tendencies. We will also be forced to file a formal report with Child Welfare."

Helena looked down her nose at my son, who was sitting quietly in the chair beside me.

"Maybe this school simply isn't suitable for children like you," the principal said.

Milo shifted in his seat. He looked at Helena, his brow furrowing as he tried to process her words. He didn't understand the social weight of the threat. He didn't know if "children like you" meant he was too poor, too weird, or too dangerous.

He looked up at me, his wide eyes filled with genuine curiosity.

"Mommy," Milo asked, his voice ringing out clearly in the tense silence. "Is it because I'm a wolf?"

A heavy pause settled over the boardroom, followed instantly by a ripple of amused scoffs. Two board members actually laughed out loud, shaking their heads at the absurdity of the question.

Vanessa rolled her eyes toward the ceiling. "Honestly. There has to be a limit to the stories you let this child make up."

I didn't correct them. I didn't say a word.

I just watched Milo. When he heard the adults laughing, a small, relieved smile touched his lips. He thought they finally understood his joke. He thought the tension was breaking.

Looking at my son's innocent smile, the last frayed thread of my restraint snapped.

For three months, I had swallowed my pride. I had played the part of the powerless, struggling single mother because I believed blending in was the only way to keep him safe from the Red Fang trackers.

But that logic was dead. The emergency seal had been broken. A stranger from another pack had already stood inside his classroom. Now, this school was threatening to put Milo’s name and "abnormal behavior" into an official government database.

Pretending to be a normal human wouldn't lower the risk anymore. It would only tie my hands and leave my son completely defenseless when our enemies finally arrived.

I reached across the table and placed my fingertips on the behavioral statement Helena had pushed toward me. I slid it right back until it hit the edge of the principal's keyboard.

"Milo will not sign anything," I said. "And neither will I."

I stood up from my chair and gently pulled Milo to his feet, tucking him securely behind my legs.

Vanessa let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Are you actually trying to be intimidating? What can you possibly do besides threaten us?"

"I can stop pretending this room has authority over my son," I answered.

The board president cleared his throat, looking uncomfortable with the sudden shift in my demeanor. "Perhaps we should take a ten-minute recess. Let both sides cool down before we make any permanent decisions."

"No," I said instantly.

I knew exactly what a recess meant. It meant giving Helena and Vanessa time to make phone calls, coordinate their lies, and ensure the security footage was permanently wiped before I could get a court order.

I turned my back to the board and knelt down so I was eye-level with my son.

"Milo," I said softly, ignoring the angry muttering of the adults behind me. "Do you want to go wait in the hallway? You don't have to stay in here."

Milo shook his head. His small hands gripped the fabric of my sweater.

"I can stay," he said, his voice steady and determined. "They are being mean to you now."

My chest tightened painfully. He still didn't recognize that the isolation, the stolen lunches, and the quiet room were acts of cruelty against him. He just thought they were strange human rules. But the moment these people raised their voices at me, he recognized the bullying instantly.

If I backed down today, if I kept hiding, the only lesson my son would learn was that his mother had to endure abuse just to survive.

I stood back up and faced the table.

I raised my left hand. For three months, I had worn a thick, silver scent-suppressor ring on my index finger. It was forged by the Pack healer, designed to trap every trace of my true nature beneath my skin.

I gripped the silver band and pulled it off.

I didn't unleash my aura like a weapon. I didn't try to crush the humans in the room with the suffocating weight of an Alpha command. I simply let the barrier fall, allowing my suppressed Luna scent to roll out naturally.

It washed over the conference room in a quiet, invisible wave. To the humans, it probably just felt like the air conditioning had suddenly dropped ten degrees. The room grew heavy, the atmosphere thickening with an undeniable, ancient authority that made the hair on the back of their necks stand up.

But to anyone with even a drop of wolf blood in their veins, the message was absolute and deafening.

At the far end of the long oak table, Elias Voss stopped breathing.

The wealthy board member shoved his chair back so violently that the wooden legs shrieked against the polished floor. He shot to his feet. Every trace of color drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, terrified ash.

He stared at me, his eyes wide with shock, before his gaze darted to the small boy standing behind my legs.

The rest of the board went dead silent, staring at Elias in confusion. They clearly expected the powerful financier to demand security drag the troublemaking mother out of the building.

Instead, Elias Voss lowered his head. He brought his right hand up, pressing his palm flat over his heart in the deepest, most formal gesture of Pack submission.

"Luna," he whispered.
